For my FemShep? Vielle.

It's a type of five-stringed instrument, also referred to as a fidel. I thought the word sounded pretty, plus there's a nice double meaning in the origin of the name itself (after all, 'fidel', while referring to an instrument in this context, also means 'faithful'; 'loyal').

For my M!Shep? Hanlon.

Because... well.
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" pretty much sums up why everyone's ****blocking him from stopping the Reapers, doesn't it?
(Besides, it's an excuse to use the omni-blade in ME3. How else am I supposed to make witty quips about meeting "Hanlon's razor"?)

Logan (Colonist/War Hero) - Means "from the hollow". He feels empty after his parent's deaths on Mindior.
Naomi (Colonist/Ruthless) - A Biblical woman who lost her entire family; renamed herself "Mara", which means "bitter".
Annabel "Bel" (Spacer/Ruthless) - Named after Edgar Allan Poe's poem Annabel Lee. I just...really like the poem. XD
Samantha (Spacer/Sole Survivor) - Means "listener". She keeps an open door policy - her crew knows they can always talk to her.
Eris (Earthborn/War Hero) - The name means "strife". Seemed perfect for her since she has known nothing but fighting for survival - and having romanced Kaidan AND Garrus will only add to her list of problems.
Janine "Jay" (Earthborn/Sole Survivor) - Named after David Bowie's song "Janine". She is constantly trying to prove herself and be tough, but at the same time, she doesn't know what she's getting into.
Harley (Colonist/Sole Survivor) - Named after Batman's Harley Quinn. She's a Joker hopeful. Get it? Joker and Harley? ...Nevermind. Bad joke. XD
Troi (Spacer/War Hero) - I just needed a Trekki name in the Mass Effect universe. XD

I only named one of my three Shepard's with a custom name; the other two simply used the default John and Jane. I named her Alana, for essentially the same reason as the OP.

I have only two names I use for my characters. While I mostly play as female Shepard, my default name for her is always Cameron. Why? *Shrug* There's no specific reason. It's just how I see Shepard as a no-nonsense navy brat with a slight tomboyish tendencies, the unisex name Cameron sounded like a perfect fit. I think the main influence for the name comes from two sources: From Stargate SG-1, after Col. Cameron Mitchell and from House M.D., after Allison Cameron.

My male Shepards, what few there is, are nearly always just John. It's a fine, short and memorable name, so why change it? Plus, my real name shares two first letters. If I had to pick a different name, I think it would be Dwayne, after Corporal Dwayne Hicks, from the movie Aliens. A fictional future marine too.

Jin Shepard - Asian descent, named after my favourite character from the Xenosaga series
Gaius Shepard - Shares a similar personality to Gaius Baltar from BSG
Xavier Shepard - No real reason, thought it might sound cool

Females:
Leo Shepard - Using my usual pseudonym that every "first" character I make has, has a tomboy sound and suits her personality
Nyxia Shepard - Using my usual "bad girl" name for my first Renegade, something dark yet feminine
Priya Shepard - Priya is Indian for "rising sun" and she was originally going to be of Indian descent (also a character in Dollhouse, which I was watching at the time)
Miri Shepard - Until I realised it was Miranda's nickname, thought it was a cute short name to use, was thinking of Mara Jade during creation

Skylar (Spacer/War Hero/Infiltrator/Paragon) - She is Scandinavian in family origin, and I came up with a little backstory for her...she was a fighter pilot before she went to N7 training and fought in the Blitz. So Sky pilot...

Scarlett (Earthborn/Sole Survivor/Soldier/Renegon) - Skylar's alternate universe double. Has a huge scar on her cheek, hence Scarlett.

Amara (Colonist/Ruthless/Vanguard/Renegade) - I named this one off the top of my head, and when I did the research I found I'd chosen wisely. "Amara" is often interpereted as meaning "bitter" or "bitter one," which she definitely is after her family is killed on Mindoir. It also means "unfading."

Kathryn (Spacer/Sole Survivor/Sentinel/Paragon) - She is JanewayShep, plain and simple.

Mike (Spacer/War Hero/Engineer/Paragade) - Named after a man I loved and lost...who's an aerospace engineer. Go figure. Lol.

I only have one FemShep and I called her Divinia, no idea where it came from, I must have heard or read it somewhere. She's a ruthless earthborn Vanguard, a total b*&*h really!

My main ManShep is called Lordy which is my nickname, not very original but there you go! He's a colonial, sole survivor/sentinel and a bit of a Renegon, he started out as a douche but he gets a little more diplomatic by the end.

(m) Vanguard: Kenrik, it means champion of the people. Thought it had a good meaning behind it and and sounded cool.

(f) Infiltrator: Kyra, basically based off the girl from the Chronicles of Riddick.

(m) Adept: Zazu, poached from the bird off of Lion King thought it sounded cool and was unique.

(f) Sentinel: Millie, I've always liked this name thought it fit a Sentinel.

I don't really play Engineer or Soldier anymore.
