Like so many have said, people have already formed connections with old characters and don't want some new guy in for the "lol diversity." And coming out doesn't change who you are (people just hate you more).
Besides, they let us boink Garrus and Tali. Think of how un-canon that is if you took only the information you got from ME1.
I'm happy either way -- I just want the romance to be well done.
