I played the game, loved it to death. I decoded locks, used electronic skills.
I am now playing a new character with a different mindset and I can't get my team to use their skills.
What is the point of autolevel if half the skills are wasted? I cant get them to decode a locked cabinet
or use their electronic skill (for instance: Sparta system has crashed satellite that I can't get into).
These skills don't show up like the offense skill that show up in the command HUD.
So how do I use their talents? Am I wasting my time autoleveling their talents?
Mass Effect - using team members talents / skills.

Well I don't know what skills you mean are wasted but I turn off autoleveling so that I can decide where their points go.
You just need to bump up the decryption or electronics higher for someone in your squad before you can unlock it. Maybe turn off autoleveling and then put the points in yourself.

Yeah, don't bother with autoleveling.
The trick with all RPGs is to focus build. Any character with ok stats in all aspects is crap at everything.

Decryption/electronics aren't normal skills. The way they work is by allowing you to open stuff, if you have someone in your party with sufficiently high skills. So if there's something with a high level of electronics/decryption skill necessary, you're going to want a tech person along. That's Garrus, Tali, or Kaidan, with Tali likely having the highest skill levels of the three. (Liara also has Electronics, but not decryption.)
But yeah, autolevel is OK on your first playthrough, maybe, but after that, ditch it. Either build the characters however you want or look up some of the character skills/leveling guides on the Internet. There's no "best" builds, precisely, but you can definitely improve on the autoleveling.
EDIT: Oh, btw, don't let the autoleveling put points into Liara's stasis power. There's a bug by which if she has all of her powers unlocked, one of them will "fall off" the screen and you actually can't use it anyway. Stasis isn't all that useful anyway... much more useful in ME2, IMO. But your mileage may vary. Just don't give it to Liara!

thanks that answered my question....It is not a waste of time leveling team members with decryption/electronic skills because if high enough I can still use the skills, it is automatic.
