Changing the default sky

I've been working on a special project recently, designing a custom persistent world, and one thing I've really wanted to do is create a custom sky for it.  Note that this is not a question about creating a custome Skydome, but rather about editing the appearance and properties of the basic sky in the game that goes through day-night cycles, has a sun and moon, etc.

One of the main things I'd like to achieve is to have a moon that is always in the sky, independant of the sun, due to lore-related reasons.  A few other planetary bodies would be nice to add too.  Basically, the moon should be in a stationary place in the sky, and there should NOT be a moon that moves.

I've found the files for the sky located in the data folder.  I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience messing with the sky, or if someone knows how to go about changing the way it works.  Any tips would be appreciated.

In the properties for the area are the day/nightime settings. You can change virtually anything you want there. There are many daynight setting released on the vault that you can import into an area, and of course you can export your settings for use in other areas.

Changing the area lighting goes a long long way to establishing moods. In Misery Stone for instance, those are standard areas (albeit very well designed), the entire "look" is done with the daynight setting.

As far as locking the moon into geosynchronous orbit so it doesn't move in the sky, I'm not sure if that can be done. But the daynight settings do control the positioning of the sun and moon.

Thanks for the reply. I'm already pretty familiar with what can be done via the day/night cycle settings. Plenty of options in there, of course, but not an option to freeze moon in place without getting rid of the day-night cycle, nor for having a moon in the daytime. I've started playing with the concept of using custom placeables or effects to put in the sky instead of the basic celestial objects, though then I still have the matter of removing the default moon from the cycle.

Here is what COULD work: I set the moon below the horizon, but then need to put placed lights in the sky where it should be, which would have to be scripted to turn off during the daytime, and use a placeable moon. It is a solution, I suppose, but a rather inelegant one and probably too much hassle for what it's worth.

Your best bet would be making a custom skydome with the moon built in. Then overriding the default moon (using a transparent dds.) as part of your hak. Custom skydome's are not especially hard, other than the fact they are repeated, so if you put a giant mountain in the background, you'll see it twice, once in one direction and once in the other. You can get around that by carefully cutting any feature of the skydome along the edge of the picture you use for the skydome.

One very slick trick hellfire demonstrated after I suggested the idea to him, and that was to use a custom placeable as a "skydome" or partial skydome.

There is one skydome that is not repeated - fx_skydome_nx2lobby from SoZ.
