I like the redesign.
The elves they spent time on look really good.
I don´t mean "good" as in "attractive" because not every elf is supposed to be an ideal of beauty, I just like the general design.
Sure, there are horrible elfs in the game - but there are also equally horrible humans, so that´s a matter of graphics, not the design of the race.
Just look closely at some of the humans NPC´s in the streets...
They could use a little tweaking though - most elves have far too big ears and heads in relation to their bodies.

I never understood why people compare Fenris with an anime or final fantasy character.
I dislike the overly fancied up characters in the newer Final Fantasy games, but Fenris doesn´t belong into that category by a long stretch.
And if I think back on western fantasybooks and RPG´s I´ve read and played, exaggerated character design (especially in D&D) is certainly not exclusive to Japan...

I'm not even sure how a person can supposedly "look" like they belong in Final Fantasy. That just doesn't make sense to me:

Image IPB

Snow Villiers -- FFXIII

Image IPB

Sazh Katzroy --- FFXIII

Image IPB

Galenth Dysley A.K.A Superpope

Image IPB

Basch Von Ronsenberg --- FFXII

http://forum.spaziog...04&d=1283855463

Balthier A.K.A Ffamran mied Bunansa -- FFXII

Granted his CGI model may give off more of an asian vibe to some people, but if you look at other pictures it doesn't really:

Image IPB

Image IPB

Auron -- FFX

How do any of these people that are present in JRPGs say they belong in JRPGs? What constitutes "looking like some Final Fantasy character"? The appearance? The mannerisms? The clothing? The food they eat?

If you saw these images, with no knowledge of the game they were in, would they seem like they were characters from a JRPG to you?

*general you here*

Well, with Sazh being an exception they are pretty overstyled in my opinion, at least since Final Fantasy XII.
It´s a mixture of everything you´ve mentioned, but you see it best when looking at in-game cutscenes:
I´ve got the feeling of looking at CGI-designed models for hairstyles and clothing, they´re just too stylized and smooth to look real anymore.
It´s a matter of taste, of course - it just doesn´t appeal to me.

Really? I thought the FF games were able to make hair look more realistic than most other games. If one were to look at the DA games' hairstyles very closely, it all seems painted on. DAII made this problem more evident, but I realized in a recent DAO playthrough that it was inherent in DAO as well.

But opinions will vary

I´m not criticising the way they´v animated hair because I agree, they did that especially well - I just don´t like the style they did it in.
The characters look like they´ve just come out from a high society hair stylist, hair just to the right degree fringy and glossy.
A real person would need hours to get that effect.
I realize that in games presentation plays a huge role and you can´t compare everything to real life, but in Final Fantasy it´s just too much for my taste. ;)

Oh well, I guess we´ve got a bit derailed from the thread-topic.

Ah gotcha. Well to be fair, I wouldn't expect them to start pulling out a hair brush and some hair gel and spend a few hours trying to make themselves look pretty Image IPB

But I understand what you said now.

Well, it's not that far off topic. Most of the arguments about the Elves are that they're too JRPG-like, so if the forumites can discern what actually makes something scream JRPG we can then use that in the discussions about the Elves, to either debunk the claim or agree with it.

Take for instance why you dislike the hair. It doesn't seem like a natural formation hair would grow into to you, which is fair. Though this is also something seen in other games. Also, in Skyrim, you can sleep with long hair you don't get bed head. Or even the CE origin of DAO.

We could then see if other people feel that way about any of the Elves' hairstyles, though I highly doubt anyone would because there aren't these types of hairstyles in the game.

I don't want them to go back to the original. There just needs to be some middle ground with their appearances.

Plus what Atakuma said.

To have an issue with white hair is to say you want Sten's hair to be brown when he appears again. More or less.

Wynee and sten had white hair too, but wynee is a grandma and sten is a qunari. it isnt naturaly at Fenris, it is white because he was a *slave* i found his character annoying too, as he wouldnt sh*t up about him being a slave, (as did anders annoy me with the templar talks) but thats just my opinion,
i simply think he looks to much anime IMO, because of his emo hair, his white hair, plus the smooth clean faces (cartoonish art style) maybe his clothes or it also could be his 2 meter sword on his back but nevermind, you can tell me whatever you want, it wont change my mind, i compare him with that

@ atakuma
you say its a meaningless buzzword people use instead of making an argument? Well saying just "i hate fenris because he is anime" could be meaningless, but i made an argument in my post, i also said why i think he does, you should read a bit further then just taking out the part you dont like,
i found it a bit funny that Fenris anime'ness wasnt actually the main thing of my post

I like the distinct look of the elves in DA II, I wouldn't want them to go back to their DA:O counterparts. I like how their ears are longer than in DA:O and how they slightly rotate outwards. I especially love their noses and how they slope onto the forehead. My only complaint on their new look is that the female elves look a bit too anorexic. What does needs attention are the individual morphs of the elven NPC's. All the elves that they obviously spent time on like Fenris, Merrill, and Tallis look great. Although I have to say that Tallis her nose looks too human compared to the other elves. But say the elven servant, Orana, looks horrid. I don't know if they actually intended her to look like that or just randomized it, but I don't like it at all. If they work on that, I'll be a happy panda.

I thought Fenris lost his natural hair color when he underwent the lyrium tattoo ritual?

That is my explanation for his white hair too, that the contact with raw lyrium somehow altered the pigment in his hair.

I'm pretty sure he was already a slave for a long time (since childhood).

That specific ritual was to give him more power so he could better serve Danarius as bodyguard.

That's how I've viewed it myself. He does describe the ritual as traumatizing and agonizingly painful, so I could definitely see it happening.

Me too. I've always thought it was due to the ritual, kind of like that old situation of getting terrorized so badly that you hair goes white.

Yea, that's how I rationalized the white hair too.

As for original post, I prefer DA2 elves to DAO. They are unique now instead of being small humans with pointy ears.  I believe Marethari is absolutely the most beautiful creature in DA2. She reminds me of Savah of the Sun Folk in Elfquest.

I still think whoever did that to Zevran should be boiled in oil though....All they needed to do was put some eyebrows on the dude!

I really like the new look of the elves. They look slightly alien and exotic without looking totally ridiculous. Granted, there are a few bad examples, but generally speaking, I like the new look. Same goes for the Qunari (though they all look the same).

I'm a fan of the Skyrim elves myself, though they aren't far off from the DA2 elves in terms of appearence so I guess I'll say DA2 elves for the sake of the above list.

OMG I find them hideous - but I tried to find a pic to represent one - but everything out there is really bad - I am sure someone has created their own character that could represent the Skyrim elves.

I cant make a pic because my Skyrim is on XBOX360 - at least Im not sure how to do it.

All PC's/NPC's look hideous in Skyrim. Character design was never their strong suit. I guess that may be part why they were so willing to provide first person view and armor that covers your entire character .
