One of the main reasons that Bioware re-designed the Darkspawn is that they wanted to move firmly away from the over-used goblins and orcs that are used in many of these types of worlds.

Perhaps the re-design of the elves is another (deliberate) slap to Tolkien's face? In that, elves are traditionally naturally beautiful - much more so than the other races - but in the DA universe, they are now incredibly ugly from the perspective of a human.

Merril isn't ugly...

And Orsino looks great.  I would love to play a PC who looks like Orsino.

Once I saw someone on BSN call him Count Chocula, it was all over.

Elves are supposed to be beautiful in DA lore, too.

Bioware simply needs to refine the DA2 look and no more of the generic elves used for scenery that hardly look like they're the same race as Orsino, Fenris, Merril, etc. Making elves look different than short humans with pointy ears is one thing, but some of the elves look like some science experiment gone wrong.

My Hawkes have yet to romance Merril in DA2, but I've seen the pics, and they're scary. I'd prefer Merrill keep her clothes on and have the Isabela scene show nudity.

1. The codex entry was written by one guy making a broad generalization. The codex is supposed to be taken with a grain of salt.
2. There were plenty of ugly elves in Origins.
3. Different regions and cultures have different standards of beauty.
4. Having elves be uniformly beautiful would be rediculous.

Think that's the new kossith.

As for the elves, they can rebuild them. They have the technology. They have the capability to build the world's first distinct elf. Better than they were before. Better, stronger, faster.

Absolutely not.

I love my DA2 Merrill the way she is.

DA2 redesign reminds me of fauns, er without the horns of course.

I'm not dissing, its just what they remind me of.  Personally I have no issue with their look, they just need to have bulkier bodies imho.  That guard at the Dalish camp who threatens Hawke?   It really isn't that convincing when he looks like a strong wind would snap him in half.

Not sure what codex entry you mean.  I was thinking of the novels and of Zevran's statement that the Crows prefer elven assassins because humans find them attractive.  Of course there's no accounting for taste.

The "there were ugly elves in Origins" argument sort of falls flat if you had hoped for improvement.

A codex by Brother Genitivi. And Zevran's description of elves probably applies solely to Antivan elves.

Origins elves didn't look like humans with pointy ears. Cover the ears and I could immediately tell you if the character in question is human or elf.

People don't dislike Dragon Age 2 elves because they're 'different', which is what Bioware pretends is the problem with any complaint about Dragon Age 2, but because they look awful. Elves are, according to Dragon Age lore, supposed to be attractive to humans. Aside from Merril, not a single Dragon Age 2 elf looks remotely appealing to most human standards.

Most of them look like they've suffered severe blunt force trauma and recieved reconstructive surgery from a drunk, blind auto mechanic trying to give them facial features similar to a chipmunk. An ugly chipmunk.

If the developers want a "unique" elf look, fine. Elves now look like insects with Downs Syndrome. That's certainly.......unique. But its not a look for a race that is supposed to be physically attractive to humans. This new Talis character is visually appealing because she lacks the bug-freak extremes that DA2 elves have.

Hahahah! and the freak/disturbing  looking  elves will be back in da3. Image IPB

Why would it? Nothing in the game indicates the Antivan elves are significantly different appearance-wise from other elves, or that the Crows limit themselves to employing only Antivan elves for this matter.

I can live with the changes more or less (I don't like them) BUT THE ELONGATED NECK, for whatever reason, ANNOYS ME. It is the single reason I cannot romance Merril. She reminds me too much of Greys and Kaminoians.

The sad thing is, DA elves were unique. Besides Sapkowski´s work, I can´t think of any widely known setting were elves have it that bad. Why is there now such an obssession with the appearence? Most players who aren´t fans of the game aren´t going to recognize them for DA elves anyway, even if their reaction to the new looks is favorable, which from what I read here and other forums doesn´t seem to be the case.

The opinion on the new elven look is about as uniform as the opinion on DA2 itself, and I suspect there's a bit of blending of the two. At least some people aren't going to like the change just because it's a change, even if the original version of the elves wasn't all that spectacular. And even if that isn't the case, we're not crowd-sourcing the appearance of our races-- we wanted our races to be more distinct from one another as a goal, and that's what we've done. Short of the tweaks I mentioned earlier (which will come as technology changes demand, in particular), we're not going back to the original style.

Er... why would that be the case?

In TST Maric, canoodling with Katriel, mentions that he understands why men are attracted to elven women.  There might even be mention of them being favorites in brothels, I don't remember exactly.

LOL^, that's good. Anyway, what Mr. Gaider describes as something I highlighted above seem hardly unique, considering the elves in DA2 look strikingly like the Na'vi.

Because he said the Crows, who operate out of Antiva and live in Antiva, hire elves due to their attractiveness.

And there were still ugly elven women in Origins, so it's a moot point. The Stolen Throne came out after Origins. He didn't say that men were attracted to all elven women, now did he? Image IPB

He just said elven women. That doesn't mean they're all attractive. It just means that men have a propensity to be as attracted to elven women as they are to human women.

There's also the HN line in Origins to Iona when asking what she thinks of humans.  Paraphrasing but it goes something like, "Do you find them attractive?  The reverse is often true."  Like I said paraphrasing but it gives the impression that "Elves are attractive" is a common opinion, though it may be an opinion based on misinformation.

Generally, I am reminded of one of three things whenever I come across an elf in DA2:
