One of the main reasons that Bioware re-designed the Darkspawn is that they wanted to move firmly away from the over-used goblins and orcs that are used in many of these types of worlds.
Perhaps the re-design of the elves is another (deliberate) slap to Tolkien's face? In that, elves are traditionally naturally beautiful - much more so than the other races - but in the DA universe, they are now incredibly ugly from the perspective of a human.

1. The codex entry was written by one guy making a broad generalization. The codex is supposed to be taken with a grain of salt.
2. There were plenty of ugly elves in Origins.
3. Different regions and cultures have different standards of beauty.
4. Having elves be uniformly beautiful would be rediculous.

Not sure what codex entry you mean. I was thinking of the novels and of Zevran's statement that the Crows prefer elven assassins because humans find them attractive. Of course there's no accounting for taste. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

The "there were ugly elves in Origins" argument sort of falls flat if you had hoped for improvement.

If the developers want a "unique" elf look, fine. Elves now look like insects with Downs Syndrome. That's certainly.......unique. But its not a look for a race that is supposed to be physically attractive to humans. This new Talis character is visually appealing because she lacks the bug-freak extremes that DA2 elves have.
Why would it? Nothing in the game indicates the Antivan elves are significantly different appearance-wise from other elves, or that the Crows limit themselves to employing only Antivan elves for this matter. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...
And Zevran's description of elves probably applies solely to Antivan elves.

The sad thing is, DA elves were unique. Besides Sapkowski´s work, I can´t think of any widely known setting were elves have it that bad. Why is there now such an obssession with the appearence? Most players who aren´t fans of the game aren´t going to recognize them for DA elves anyway, even if their reaction to the new looks is favorable, which from what I read here and other forums doesn´t seem to be the case.
The opinion on the new elven look is about as uniform as the opinion on DA2 itself, and I suspect there's a bit of blending of the two. At least some people aren't going to like the change just because it's a change, even if the original version of the elves wasn't all that spectacular. And even if that isn't the case, we're not crowd-sourcing the appearance of our races-- we wanted our races to be more distinct from one another as a goal, and that's what we've done. Short of the tweaks I mentioned earlier (which will come as technology changes demand, in particular), we're not going back to the original style.

In TST Maric, canoodling with Katriel, mentions that he understands why men are attracted to elven women. There might even be mention of them being favorites in brothels, I don't remember exactly.

Because he said the Crows, who operate out of Antiva and live in Antiva, hire elves due to their attractiveness.
And there were still ugly elven women in Origins, so it's a moot point. The Stolen Throne came out after Origins. He didn't say that men were attracted to all elven women, now did he?
He just said elven women. That doesn't mean they're all attractive. It just means that men have a propensity to be as attracted to elven women as they are to human women.
