Oh great. The character I was determined not to like goes around kicking the tar out of batarians in his leisure time. This puts me in a difficult position, Bioware.

Well then maybe you should not jump to conclusions about characters?

Terrible advice.

Vega in this comic doesn't at all come across as the starry-eyed newb to whom everything in the galaxy is new and needs explaining, as Bioware had described him before. My dislike for the character was directly related to how Bioware were pitching him, e.g. as the character for players completely new and ignorant of Mass Effect to sympathize with.

So that explains where and how Vega comes in. Basically Shepard's personal warden. Neat.

He's a goddam hero in my eyes. Imagine being set upon for no real apparent reason in a hostile environment and being able to take care of yourself. Perfect material for what is to come in ME3.

Straightforward ass kicking.

My respect for Vega just rose from next-to-nothing to rather high.

I agree absolutely with both statements. James fights as Shepard is going to fight in ME3 - outnumbered against an overwhelming aggressor. And he is victorious. He didn't wait for them to finish their threats. He struck first. That's heroic and badass. He just restored my faith in humanity in ME universe.

And it is implied he's got some past crucial to his character for me to discover. And it is implied that he sympathizes with Shepard, and is not afraid to show it. And he never started that fight, but he seems to be enjoying it. He knows when to speak, and when to strike. He's everything I'm looking for in a soldier. Not too holy as to be loathsome, but not an unhinged psychopath like Jack either - perfect balance.

They've done a great job introducing him and endearing him to me in a few pages. I knew nothing about him before, and now I want him on my crew in ME3.

I abosutely agree with this person. He hasn't quite restored my faith in humanity yet - though I never really had much of one anyway. I reckon that James and Shepard would probably get along well, especially if Shepard is of the lesser off backgrounds (ie. Sole-Survivor, Earthborn, Colonist or Ruthless). Despite the fact that Shepard's got a pair of cuffs around his wrist. I can imagine them talking a little, even if its just Shepard asking on the latest news or something like that.

I also have a feeling that this guy is going to be similar to Conrad Verner for some reason, except far more composed, mature and actually having proper combat training, lol.

And with a knife attached to the televison.

Even I can't deny that's awesome.

Interesting read, though I find some of the writing out of character.

Televison knives confirmed for ME3.

Definitely awarded points for creativity. Seems he and my Shepard might get along just fine after all.

Shepard: You serious. *Friendship +10*
James: Completely. Knife in TV. Killed a batarian with it.
Shepard: That's actually pretty resourceful. Why did I never think of that?
James: No you just blew up a batarian Mass Relay instead.
Shepard: Thank you for that low blow. *Rivalry +9000*

Out of character for who exactly?  Can't be Vega. His character hadn't been established yet.  Anderson?

Anderson for the most part, yeah. I can't imagine him saying stuff in the way he does it here. As for Vega; well, as Marsh points out, this kinda contradicts what Bioware told about him being the noob and all.

Anderson got straight to the point and left taking Vega with him and set up protection for Shepard because he's the only chance that the galaxy has of fighting the Reapers. He's protecting his protege and trying to get a good marine off his ass and back into action. How is that out of character?

It does? How? It's true he's here for the newcomers, but that doesn't mean he needs to be ignorant.

I aways got the feeling that Bioware meant that some key points of the game - like, Reapers - would be new to Vega. You don't need to be a "newb" to not know about many things Shepard does, Reapers being one.

It's not Bioware gave us details on Vega's character before, they simply said he'd be seeing some events from the perspective of someone "new", that "newness" could just mean "being new to Shepard's crew" not necessarily "new to big the bad galaxy as a whole". If you assumed he'd be starry-eyed and what not than that's your perception, Bioware never suggested that.

Well, yeah, and Legion was supposed to be a stalker following Shep throughout the game. Some of the other ME2 characters didn't really fit with their promotional images either.  Lesson: don't trust trailers/hype. Not really seeing what the problem with Anderson is, however, except maybe the profanity used in one speech-bubble. He has used it in the novels, but if you haven't read them or don't remember that, I can see how it would seem odd.

I remember Anderson cursing in ME2, but it was rare. Of course, he had very few lines.

A television with a knife in it!

EDIT: Upon further review, he hit a batarian in the face with the television, and then he hit a batarian in the chest with the tv-knife.

Oh, yeah, BTW: as if it weren't established by dev statements before, this makes it crystal clear that even if you don't play Arrival, Shep blew up that system.
