I seem to recall using Dirty Fighting quite a lot to stun enemies, and then when they were stunned I would attack. Also used bombs and traps where possible.
As the previous poster said, once you acquire the shapeshifting forms it is much easier.

My stats are 31 dex, 16 strength, rest cunning as a human rogue. Most of my talents are in the Rogue tree--rank 2 Deft Hands, rank 2 Stealth, building up to Lethality. My thought going into the Fade was that I could just stealth through the early parts, but that's impossible because you can't use Fade Portals when enemies are nearby. It flags you as in combat.

I'm level 7. I can't even get Combat Stealth yet, since it requires level 8, and I can't leave the Fade or progress in it to level up more. Not that it would matter. I can't kill stuff even with a few lucky crits in the course of the fight, since my archer misses so bloody much and does terrible damage with melee weapons. I know I can get through the Fade easily when I get transformations, but my problems is I can't get any but the mouse transformation. Once you get the mouse transformation, you have to kill several demons in order to progress through the next fade portal, which is impossible for me because my PC archer simply doesn't have the DPS to kill a shade at this point in the game. It's literally impossible. By the time I hurt a shade enough to even see a chunk out of its life bar, the shade casts life steal on me, and I'm back at square one, less a bunch of health poultices.

Wow man you missed alot to only be level seven there.
Have you tried setting your difficulty down to easy?
You may want to see about switching to duel daggers and attempting to melee it with those stats, if you have them of course. Low levels archery is pretty weak until you get better bows and stats. If you can though unlikly use a Xbow at lower levels as well since it bypasses some ability mechanics to do a little more damage at low levels.
Another option is to reload a previus save if you have one. You want to do everything you can do in Lothering and then go to Red Cliff first then the circle tower generaly.
Another thing you could do is since your on the PC use a cheat code for temporay stats. I belive theres one that will give you a 5 minute buff to your stats for any amount you want. Use this to get your first form and then use the forms from there.
Unfortunetly the problem your really having is that Rogue Archer is one of the weaker builds in Origins, especialy low levels. Until you get the gear and stats its really difficult.

I don't have a save before Lothering, so I guess this playthrough is screwed unless I cheat.

I didn't miss anything. I went straight to Circle Tower after Lothering. I've done this on every character I've played so far without issue, until this character. Switching to easy would probably make the first few demons trivial, but that's basically cheating. I might as well use a console kill command.

Changing difficultys has no effect on your game except make it slightly easier or alot harder., theres not even achivements or anything and alot of people have had to do it here or there.
You really are in a bad situation because of the character you built at those levels is weak solo.
Since you said your 7 what spec did you take? you might have some advantages if you were Ranger because of the pet. Ranger/Bard is popular for Rogue Archers.
God I wish we could share characters as extra party members, id have one of my guys come help you

Archers are somewhat slow to build and generally are used as backup for the frontline warriors. But with the right armor and weapons they can hold their own in any section of the game. Archers in one on one combat probably should not go toe to toe with enemies, but are likely better off attacking from a distance, laying traps in doorways, throwing bombs into clusters of enemies, and using stealth to hide from view. It does not require cheating to get through the Fade as an archer, but it does require tactics that fit with the archery style of combat.
Sometimes the game does an auto-save just before a character goes into a dangerous area. So even though you did not do a manual save, there may be an auto-save you can reload to get out of the Circle Tower. Or maybe not, but it might be worth checking where your last auto-save was made.
If you can get out of the Circle Tower that way, try going to Redcliffe first and build up the archer a bit before trying again. Or cheat. Or start a new game. Whatever feels right, I guess.

If you're archer, try some skill to stun your enemy, to prevent them from attacking you for sometimes, and deal with the other one. It should not be so difficult to do. There's no need for stealth. All you need is the skills that able to temporarily disable your foes, some bomb, traps, and of course, health potions!
