I'm looking for RPG recommendations.

Icewind Dale 1 & 2
Fallout 3 & New Vegas
Arcanum
Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and V:TM - Bloodlines, though Bloodlines is a superior game
Freedom Force - now there are plenty of pre-made characters and linearity to the story, BUT after a certain point in the game you can add your own characters you make that can have whatever story you want and you can for the most part then run around the game with four characters of your own design. PLUS, tons of mods out there a la the NWN experience for gaming, some very excellent ones even
Dead State - not out, but looks like a very solid game from everything I've read
Kingdoms of Amalur - I'm optimistic and excited, but need to see it to be certain
Lionheart - I remember it losing my interest when I tried to play it three times, but it might work for you
Age of Decadence - I'm betting if you don't know about this that you'll be pleasantly surprised when you go to check it out
Avernum and others from Spiderweb Software - these might be up your alley as well

I'm going to step far outside your stated genre preference and recommend the Paradox Interactive strategy games based on your mentioning Alpha Centauri. They aren't RPGs, and you don't create a character. However, they're not really in the business of telling you what you cannot do - instead offering risk and rewards via game mechanics for certain decisions (for example, go to war without cause and you incur infamy, which eventually give countries a free war on you) - and are more about learning how the game works and why so you can achieve the goals you set for yourself.
Sorry to hijack the thread slightly, but seeing as you mentioned paradox i've just noticed on Steam they are doing a good deal on Mount & Blade today.

There are terrific deals for Paradox products on Steam, right now. And Vaeliorin already directed me toward Spiderweb, but it's nice to see confirmation, as his preferences are nearly as specific as mine, though different.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

So, given that, what's out there? Obviously sandbox games are more likely to meet this criterion, but even games that aren't sandboxes can.
I have strong preferences on other design aspects as well, but I'm going to set those aside. I'd just like some recommendations of games that let me design my character's personality from the start and don't later tell my I'm wrong.
It would be helpful if you can let us know which games you have already played.

If you ever get to that, if the patch deal did not put you off, google Planet Vampire and check around the site and forum.

I already have the first Drakensang game. I haven't found time to play it, yet.
Same here. I did install it and start it and loved character creation....
unless it ended and I realized it was only one character I got to make.
I know, it's my fault for not doing the research, but I got that game recommended when I did a similar thread to this one awhile back and just assumed (due to what I had listed as what I was looking for) that I got to make all of my party.
So minutes into game after creating my character I quit. I'll get back to it eventually, as that was an unfair judgment on it, but disappointment is disappointment.

When I bought it, that's what I thought, too. And I was also disappointed when I learned I only created one character. That might be why I haven't gotten around to it, yet, but I will.MerinTB wrote...

I played and enjoyed Ultima IX. Extensive patching isn't a problem.Russalka wrote...

I suppose someone had to have.
Okay, no, I never played it. Ultima's never were my thing. I fiddled with 4, 6 and Online, but not much.

Also Fallout 3 may be something you would like but you don't have a lot of choice in backstory and factions.

EA sent me a free copy of UO to apologise for the state of U9 on release. All registered U9 owners got a free copy of UO. It was quite an admission of failure on EA's part, and it earned a lot of respect from me.MerinTB wrote...

Either Ultima IV or Ultima VII is the greatest CRPG ever made. I generally elan toward U4, because I have more experience with it, but they're both completely brilliant.
There was a (buggy) flash version of U4 online as recently as 4 months ago, but they got a cease and desist order from EA and had to take it down.
But back to U9, there's a dungeon in that game that I think modern game designers should all see. Hythloth. I suspect most people who played U9 only ever saw the first half of that dungeon; the second half was optional (there was an escape hatch halfway through), and reaching the second half required you solve a diabolically difficult puzzle.

By my standards, Fallout 3 is a terrific game. You're free to be whomever you'd like and do whatever you'd like, and the world design is such that your roleplaying choices really do matter, as a diligent character will find important things that a less patient character will not (and the less patient character will have no idea he's missed something).legion999 wrote...

That's weird. It's already free at GOG and multiple other places on ther internet, including EA itself. Of course I don't know why anyone would prefer to play Ultima 4 in flash either.

Platforms matter. Perhaps a browser is easier to run than DOSBox.for some people.Jonp382 wrote...

Also, I didn't know it was freely available.

A game that matches your criteria doesn't exist. One can still dream though. But don't get your hopes up. I don't think such a game will ever get created.
You could try Minecraft, but I'd hardly call that an RPG, unless you play it as such (some people like to RP their Minecraft character. I personally just want to build funny structures).

Such a game does not exist.

That criteria basically eliminates almost every game in existance. So, naturally, any game where the character says or does things without direct player control are out.
EDIT: Minecraft fits your criteria though
