Let's have a specific example. Go look at the pectoralis muscle. Go look at the DAO body models. See where it attaches to the humerus on a real person? See how it doesn't attach to the humerus at all on the DAO models?
I have no idea what is going on with the shoulders and neck and arm of this elf. It may be an animation issue but I'd be hard pressed to say that it is at all anatomically sound what is going on in this picture. Regardless of whether you're a fantasy elf or something else entirely, something is very wrong here.
Tallis face modeled after Felicia is impressive. Will it set standards for DA3?

I don't think it is soley an animation issue, rather the proportions between body and head size seem to be somewhat off for the Elves. Whilst I don't have too many problems with the Elven facial structure, I would like to see some variation so that there is some variety between individuals beyond what could be termed as a general facial structure.
ie: All Elves have eyes more widely spaced and a particular nose shape, which is fine, but some variation without the Elves starting to look somewhat freakish, like the minor NPCs is prefrable. Although I don't particularly like Elves having bare feet, seem strange, more akin to hobbits.

Ok, have it your way. I asked you because you said "that you studied art and that the DA2 grafic style is not cartoony".

I agree while some relevance can be applied to the animation of the model the model itself is flawed and just simply and truly horrible imho from the skinny arms, the giant bobble head on thin long neck to begin with even not taking account of the poor angle of the animation. The lifeless face of Hawke after being boarded by this weird matchstick creature... Basically the design was bad imho to begin with which is what partly cause the animation problem. Naked Merrill shows the true Merrill under those clothes and shes scary level of thin and oddly shaped. People are right when say they designed her to not be human she's more like a monster or creature from worst knightmares in that image like boney arms and hands of death stretched out to suck out your soul which appears to have been accomplished going by the face of Hawke and how emotionless he is.

ipgd, a translation for you. "Cartoony" means "stylised", "not simply a lower resolution version of looking like a true-to-world photograph" when spoken in this manner, I believe.
There are oh so many ways to present stylised graphics though, and I find it sad so many seem to think realistic is the only way to go or immersion goes out the window. I like all of these shots, and they all look distinct from each other and they're all stylised, and I've cried to more than one of these games cause they were so touching;
None of these games have photorealistic graphics, but they're all of quite distinct styles. How is that not good? ^^;
oh and if i may throw this out there.....DA2 not even close resembling a jrpg at all(even though this and most naruto games arent jrpgs)
also on the Tallis pic isnt exactly the best to go with she looks much better animated and farther away(
and not in a hurtful way)

Oh give me a break.
Ralph Fiennes played Amon Goeth in Schindler's List, pretty much one of the most despicable human beings to ever exist, yet everyone I know remains perfectly capable of watching any of his other films because he's just an actor.

This argument makes no sense to me. For one thing, people are assuming that what one man said applies to all of the elves in Thedas when he couldn't have possibly met every single elf in Thedas. It only applies to those that he actually met. Genitivi has had no experiences with the Dalish. Even his "encounter" was most likely just an encounter with a bunch of non-Dalish, non-city elf bandits. Reason I say this is because the Warden has a similar encounter in Awakening.
For another, there were plenty of elves in DAO that repulsed me and actually made me dry heave. Cammen comes to mind, but then there was also Soris' bride-to-be and various NPC elves. Or the NPC City Elf that talks about Velanna in Amaranthine.
Finally, that people in our world don't find some of the elves attractive doesn't mean people in Thedas won't either. Arianni and Vincento are a case in point.
Beauty is subjective, and there is no denying that. I find Merrill, Athenril, Lia, Ineria, and Tallis to be drop-dead gorgeous. I find Orsino, Fenris, Paivel, Ilen, Marethari, Zevran, and others to also be well-designed (though I do admit Zevran needs more work done). The way you phrased your post makes it sound like it's an absolute fact that the DAII elves are horrendously ugly. While that's not your intent I'm sure, it came off that way.
And for all of the "they look like Na'vi" people, I just don't see enough similarities to say they do. Frankly I don't see any at all. Even if there are some, the differences far outweigh them. And no, the nose is not a similarity between the two races. Na'vi have a cat-like nose. The DAII elves don't.
I never claimed that anything I ever said was anything other than my opinion.
Thats all it is.
To me non of the DA2 Elves are attractive or pretty. The best they get is "average"; to me there are no "good looking" Elves in DA2 whereas there were some "good looking" Elves in DAO.
Zevran in particular was turned from attractive and rogueish to frightening looking.
I agree that I have never understood the Navi comparison. They look nothing like the Navi.
Different ears, different sizes, different, eyes, different noses, different mouths, different teeth etc.
Not even Tallis looks right, and Felicia Day IS an attractive woman.

I concur. During the dark ritual Morrigan's neck forms this rather strange looking lump too when she blows out the bedside candle.

LOL~ That whole discussion of what a real elf should look like and a cartoony elf....Again....we need more words to describe the character design/style/direction than real vs. cartoony. I don't get where people see DA:O being "realistic" anyway~

But I've been thinking and perhaps it is not the elven redesign's "fault" that I find the elves so terribly disturbing looking. I found quite a few of the dwarves (Worthy, Bartrand, Bodahn, and Sandal to name a few) to be rather creepy-looking. Not as many humans were creepy, but there were some (Sebastian, the lady in love with Feynriel, Clara, Delilah Howe). Maybe... it is the new art direction as a whole? I cannot decide...

By "realistic" I meant (as I said) in terms of realism within the game universe. As in what is realistic for the game.
To that end they are not "realistic" because they dont keep with the established (and reinforced in DA2) lore of how they are supposed to appear "as a race/species" to my eyes. Almost to a single elf they all look like they have down syndrome or some other form of mental retardation which would be great if it was for a few characters and was an intentional look at mental disability within a medieval-esque setting but it isnt and it just looks out of place and wrong.
And their bodies are just wrong also, they are small childlike and completely out of proportion with their heads making them look even more hideous and ugly and "unrealistic".
I dont mind ugly characters. As I said earlier I changed DAO Leliana and Morrigan from their hawt looking but generic selves in the vanilla game to their ugly but unique looking selves from the Sacred Ashes trailer.
And I dont claim to be an expert on "attractiveness" or that my taste is the same as everyone elses. I tend to view myself as a reasonable person and thinking that that if I find it impossible to find ANY of the Elves in DA2 attractive (not even Fenris really) then I cant be the only one who looks at them as a species and thinks it looks wrong.
Thats just what I think though.

I get why they'd model the character after tha actor since there is a tie-in, but I wouldn't want that to be the norm. She doesn't quite fit with the elven facial features, it's close, but not quite. Plus, I like to have a disconnect between real life and video games, anime, comics. etc. I wouldn't want this or something like Heavy Rain or LA Noire to become the norm.

Some are more similiar then others. Anderson and Keith David. Seth Green and Joker in the ME series are much close in my eye then Admirial Hackett and Lance Hendrickson.
Then there is DA:O where Morrigan and Lelianna where modeled after models instead of the voice actors.
For me make them look believable for the roles they are playing. I dont care if they resemble the voice actor or not. I will judge it when I get a hold of it.
