I recently bought NWN 2 from Steam and downloaded it. And while playing it my screen goes black sometimes. It only ever happens when I am running around in game or sometimes it happens in cutscences. It usually occurs for 1-2 seconds and sometimes causes the game to crash. I've turned the graphics down a little bit to see if that would help, but it hasn't. I am getting annoyed when playing the game and I'm wondering if someone has been having the same problem and if you'll be able to help me.

My comp specs are:

Windows Vista Home Premium    32 bit
Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80 Ghz
4GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GT 240
(Not sure if you will need anything else, and my computer is about 4 years old)

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Also its the Platinum version of NWN 2.

Although I can't be certain it's the bad CPU causing the problem, I can tell you that the "Pentium Dual" is essentially just another Celeron, with the exact same gutted cache problems that Celerons have. Due to the very low core speed, the missing cache, etc. involved, your PC is way below the minimum for processor power.

The minimum is a Pentium P4 at 2.6 GHz, and that slow Pentium Dual just doesn't come anywhere close to that much processing power. That model CPU is very happy to overclock way on upward in speed, if you have the correct mainboard and adequate cooling for it. Run it at 3.0 GHz, and it will be above the minimum.

Whut? That's a core 2 duo, with 1MB of L2 cache (512KB per core). It has the same amount of cache per core as a P4, http://ark.intel.com...che-533-MHz-FSB

2ghz p4 is the minimum, not 2.6 http://www.warcry.co...es-Yours-Cut-It

And the Core 2 Duo is significantly more powerful per clock.

I suspect the video driver is crashing and restarting (it has caused identical behavior on my pc when it did). Do you have the current driver for your video card.

Yeah I have the current driver for my card. And it is the video driver that crashes and restarts, a message comes up once I exit NWN 2 saying 'Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, but but has successfully recovered'.

And I don't think it would be the CPU because I can run games like Black Ops, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. But I'm not sure.

About this black screen... I've gotten up the Bandit Encampment part so far, after rescuing the commander of Fort Locke. The black screen has only happened occasionally in the swamp areas (Exterior of Swamp Cave), Fort Locke and the Bandit Encampment.
In the graveyard and the crypt I had no problem with the screen going black at all.

I've tried disabling and enabling different graphics options, lowering the screen resolution, running NWN 2 as administrator and some other things but none of it has worked.

Ok I've been running the game on pretty much the lowest graphics settings, apart from the texture quality being at medium and the resolution which is at 1360x768.
Seems to be running fine now, although I'd like to be able to have the resolution at 1680x1050 (which is my max resolution).
