Hello, I have made it to the final Quest of Act III, The LAst Straw
My Party is Hawke, Tank Sword and Shield
Anders
Varric
Isabela
First few times I play this mission I get to the part with the a ton of Shades and a Blood Mage and a Demon
my party dies within seconds as they cast a force field and stuns myself and group to where we can not attack
I reloaded and changed my group
Aveline
Fenris
Varric
this time we last longer but the same thing happens
All my characters are 22-23 right now
and most have there armor at level 3 or 4
Hawke has mainly items from the item pack 1 as they have been the best I have seen in the game
Ideas on how to complete this area?
The Last Straw Need help please

Take out the blood mage right away. I don't know that you need to change up your party - just focus your attacks. Have Anders cast at him, have Varric fire off his first shot at him, and maybe have Isabela do Twin Fangs. Once you've reduced him to a manageable level (or hopefully killed him), start concentrating on the Pride demon and the Shades. Use your ranged folks to deal the most damage on the demon though.
It's a tough fight (and others may have specific tactics to relate), but the main thing to focus on is blood mage first, then the demon.
Good luck.

Are you playing in Nightmare mode perhaps? You could always drop the difficulty level (even if you aren't playing Nightmare) just for that one fight, and then set it back to your original option afterwards.

Go to your characters' tactics and set the very top one to Health <=50%: Drink Health Potion.

This is what the wiki advises regarding the fight:
"Once you get to the docks, you'll face a blood mage and a large group of shades, including a pride demon. The blood mage should be killed right away to avoid being hit with their draining spells. Avoid the pride demon's swirling vortex spell, as it can trap you, deal heavy damage, and leave you open to be ganged up on by the shades. Have your tank lure the brunt of the shades while your ranged attackers deal with the demon."
This video shows the fight on Normal mode. I'm not sure if it will help any since the party setup is different, but it might give you some ideas for tactics.

Nooooo! On casual? Why did you do that? You were at the end!!! All you had to do was stun or crowd control the Blood Mage to death.

I died a few times as well omn this fight (it is the fight with the shades, the Pride demon and the blood mage?)
The trick is to take out the blood mage right away, and to have Anders and Varric on either edge - a good way back from the fighting. Also, you'll need Isabella's Chameleon's Breath talent as well as her
group aid talents (goad, I think?) Varric can also use Chamelon's Breath as well as having Bianca upgraded by a few singing tunes. Anders should use his aid allies and regroup talent here. As well as crowd control, I strongly recommed giving him all the fire/ice spells and their upgrades. Few monsters can resists fire or ice. Isabella and Varric should get evade, upgraded, so that enemies now to risk of being stunned. Then Anders can get them with a spell, Varric with an arrow,Aracher's Lance, or Hail of Arrows.
Also, potions that stun, grenaded or bombs (in the game) work well, I find. Crow venom also works wonders in this battle. Also, I play with a mod that sets the cooldown for heal potions etc. to 20 seconds, not 40. Great for these large battles. Miasmic flasks are also nice to use, upgraded is has a real chance of stunning enemies. Here are the talents from DA2:
http://dragonage.wik..._(Dragon_Age_II)
Anyway, the point here is to stun the enemies, and even as sword and board figther, you'll have the option to cleave or to choose a talent that lets your damage become very little, it is called Stonewall.
Shield Bash, Sactter etc. are always also good and nice
Also, I find it a bit harsh that you just deleted your save (are you on xbox or ps3?); you could just try again with a different set of friends(followers). Aveline with either a talent or special shield works wonders here. It'll make her her immune to the Ogre's stun attack.
Anyway, the point is to take out the bloodmage really quickly. If you have the Dog, you can get it to attack her. Or the Ogre. Fenris has the ability to use Lyrium Ghost, upgraded it'll stun most enemies. The trick is to get out out of the way when the Pride demon's circle turns blue, before this happens you'll hear sort of popping or bursting sound. Just have Anders put haste on them and they should be out of there in no time. The great thing about this is that every shade caught in this circle also are stunned.
I did it (on casual) by having Aveline fight the demon, myself fighting the shades (as 2H-warrior) Varric hanging back and shooting hail of arrows, archer's lance etc. and sometimes throwing a miasmic flasks or two. If I got in too much trouble I'd throw a grenade or a bomb (in the game) that stunned the enemies. And then I'll got my way out of there fast. I think I had either Anders or Merril with me; as mages they also be hanging back a little. Merrill's wrath of the Elvhen comes in pretty handy here as does Anders's elemental spells (fire and ice spells). As said, aid allies and regroup from allies from Anders are also a great help.
Also, you'll need a lot healing potions for this combat and possibly the mod I mentioned above, it also lowers the cooldown for potions by about half.

That fight to me is worse than the final battles. Andraste's flaming knickers, dear sweet Maker, that fight is hell. I've gotten through it four times now and have probably died an average of four or five times per playthrough.

You dropped a level into the basement?
I'm not sure if your game glitched or what, but if you focus everyone's fire, Orsino shouldn't be much of a problem.
With the previously mentioned encounter, yes, kill the blood mage asap. If they're in the force field, kill shades until it drops, then focus back on the mage. Use any aoe attacks or crowd control at your disposal. You can save the pride demon for last, but make sure if anyone is caught in that blue circle attack of theirs, that they move out of it asap.
Also, don't forget about your mabari. Occasionally, he will run off and end up tanking a group of enemies while my party focuses on another. That has a dramatic effect on some fights. At least once, my mabari was fighting the pride demon on their own while my party was busy with the shades.

no Orsino dropped a level and he wouldn't come up to the battle area... but I managed to kill him by using Anders, all my other fighter were close contact fighter and no good in this situation.... It took for ages but in the end it cuts to the scene where the champion kills him and I was also able to collect his items.
I would classify this as a major glitch!
