I have never played the Saerileth mod, but amidst all this paedo paranoia, one thing to remember is that there were, and probably still are, younger people playing these games and mods, as well. Sure, the idea of a "romance" with a fifteen-year-old seems squicky to me now that I'm an old fart with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, but I was in my teens when these games first came out.

Do they have condoms on Toril? If so, remember to use one with 14 yr olds, since the risk of miscarriages with not fully mature young women is significantly higher than with older girls. This is the real reason so many societies throughout history (not just the USA) have an "17/18+" taboo.
On Toril be careful with elven/drow gals since apparently they are extremely fertile and your chances of becoming a Daddy after even a one night stand are very good.

They have magic... I'm thinking Viconia must've applied quite some of those protection spells when she is romanced during the Baldur's Gate saga, otherwise she would've surely popped out more sprogs than Aerie.

That is quite true. I was around 15 or 16 when BG2 came out myself so this really shouldn't be a big concern. And in this game(s) the vigilante killing spree is quite the show. A poor villager will come out summoning a bear and ask you why you've killed everyone in his village. We just laugh it off, he certainly has no right to defend against a home invasion. The Sword Coast is a violent place and the laws could vary in every region or place. Being a lawful good character can be quite the challenge when one doesn't know what the law is...

I'm actually a half-orc.

...

Also, I'm about to turn thirty, which it just seems appropriate to have some kind of a crisis over.

Actually, in the D&D mythos, elves are much less fertile than humans and other short-lived humanoid races. (I think somebody worked out that female elves might only be in estrus once a decade!) It's one reason why despite their long life-spans and aptitude for magic, elves haven't taken over the world. They just don't have the numbers to do so.

So... It's likely that the PC just happened to get lucky with Aerie, while it just wasn't the right time for Jaheira or Viconia. (Although if you romanced the latter, you do end up with a half-drow child during the epilogue.)

I've always had my doubts about this explaination. After all, the elves and drow are the same racial stock, bar a difference in skin pigmentation  due to the drow originally being Southerners! I think it's more reasonable to assume that the elves sublimate their sex drive into art, music, poetry, etc., and thus keep their population fairly constant to avoid all out warfare with the larger, tougher, meaner expanding human race and more importantly to avoid destroying the forest/hunting  ecology they prefer to an agricultural society . Assuming the heavy fighting casualties that life on Toril involves, one might guess that the average elven couple has a total of 4 kids over the 500+ years of fertile marriage. The drow, on the other hand seem to typically have dozens of brats who have to murder each other, or drive weaklings into exile, to keep their cities from mushrooming beyond the available food sources (mostly more mushrooms and herd animals). Considering the sexual agressiveness of the elven/drow/half-elven ladies the PC encounters from Candlekeep to Amkethan, it is probable that it is  the elven males who keep their society stable by exercising massive self-restraint. No wonder poor Khalid had a stutter. All those nights of staying up late writing poetry to avoid going to bed before Jaheira dozed off.
Another data point is that elven/ drow ladies seem to eagerly welcome interspecies sex not only with humans (Aerie), but with half-orcs (Viconia) and can easily conceive with either. You have to wonder if elven ladies can conceive most nights in a month, rather than one or two.

I could imagine that the fertility (or rather the sex drive) of elves, humans and most other species on Toril except Drow depends on their social position.
With all the wars going on, all the dragons, carnivorous pants (among other things) and basically the entire world full of killing machines, I find it hard to imagine that elves could keep their population even half-way stable (read: only slowly decreasing) with 4 newborns per 500 years.
Keep in mind that in our middle ages* families of 6 or more were not considered big.
So while the upper classes practise abstinence, the lower classes need to work hard for all the new red shirts.

The drow are an exception from this because they are conceptually ridiculous in my opinion. A people that lives in Thomas Hobbes' 'State of Nature' should not be able to accomplish much of anything. Backstabbing can't be part of a successful law - and you are only able to lead at all if you can trust at least some of your followers.

*where the danger of getting killed while taking a walk through the forest wasn't nearly as high as it seems to be on Toril, though people died of pretty much everything else, including birth, so much so that in some parts children (whose life expectancy always was below their elders) were not considered full humans until they reached an age where it was reasonable to assume they could live for 10 more years or so.

The more long-lived the race, the less fertile, seems to be the common fantasy trope. Otherwise the poor short-lived races would be easily outbred and dominated.

Of course, the long-levity is not only influenced by their maximum life expectancy, but also their involvement with the world. Orcs seem to lose a whole lot more guys in battle than Evereskeans.

Cloaker: Monster that looks like a cloak. Eats you when you put it on.
Mawler: Monster that can look like any other kind of clothing. Eats you when you put it on.
And while you're trying to defend yourself against those, pay attention:
Xaver: Monster that looks like your sword.

Sometimes, paranoia is a survival instinct.

(edit: of course, there are many more monsters that look like other things in D&D, my favourite being the Gas Spore, which looks like a Beholder. Has no offensive abilities, but when you kill it, it releases a lethal gas)

Come to think of it, maybe Garrick wasn't such an idiot fop after all when he requested Lady Irina to supply him with pants. He may have thought the Radiant Heart might have the charity to supply him with one of their secret, Lawful Good stealth weapons which he could use to bribe his way out of a jam. Posted Image

This is what the D&D source books say about different races and fertility :

Interestingly, Elves have only 5% chance of conception and their pregnancy lasts 24 months.

omg - roflmao. That's the funniest thing I've seen in ages! Is there anywhere we can go to get more rpg-gamer humor like that collected in one place?
