One word: Skyrim.

Also, I don't think GOTY is necessarily indicative of quality. What is more important is what goes through your mind when someone directs a question like this to you. With Origins (deadhorsebeatinghere) it was an easy answer to give (YES OBVIOUSLY BEST RPG IN LIKE FOREVER). DA2 is not the smash hit its predecessor was, but it was a good game.

Edit: DA2 can only get award from Voices/Sounds imho.
Witcher 2/Skyrim/Deus Ex HR/Battlefield 3/Modern Warfare 3 are more serious canditates in GOTY.

Actually it was the same team bar 1 or 2 members DAO won many awards because while it wasnt all that great either it was better than the other trash that was out at the time so reviewers and gaming public alike lapped it up like a cat to double cream.Overall i can't see what all the fuss is about they just changed the direction of the franchise, not kill your baby but trust the oldschool RPG crowd to take it sooooo personally no wonder most of the general gaming public think of RPG players like leppers.

Well of course DA2 is going to be GOTY. I mean, what competition does it even have? The Witcher 2? Hardly. That consolized "streamlined" turd has nothing on DA2. No wonder CDPR is forced to release a massive patch to fix all of the issues with the initial release. Just like with their first game. Will they never learn? DX:HR? Have you heard the horrendous voice acting in that game? Not to mention the complete lack of a character creator and the lack of real choice and consequences. And don't get me started on Skyrim. It isn't out yet, but if it is anything like every other Bethesda game ever, it will be an unplayable, buggy mess long into 2012. Nope, the good folks at Bioware have GOTY well in hand.

Seriously, though, as much as I loved DA2, I doubt it'll win any. The only one that is possible is 'Best VA', and even that is unlikely. Unlike some, I don't think DA2 was a bad game, I think it was a very good game - I just think that all the elements that it did were also individually done better in other games. DX:HR and Portal 2 are both more likely from those I've played, L.A. Noire is also very good, but I haven't got far.

Yes, 'some'. As in an unspecified number of people less than 'all' (not even necessarily a majority, which without accurate polling would be pretty impossible to determine, though could potentially also constitute 'some'). 'Some' people think it is a bad game. 'Some' people think it is the worst game ever made and a travesty to life itself. 'Some' also think it is good, great, the best thing since sliced bread, or whatever. I myself fall into the 'some' that holds it to be a very good game with some very noticable flaws which overly detract from the product as a whole.

Well sure, but what I meant was that GOTY awards aren't indicitive of quality. People talk about this as if there was some sort of official GOTY award when it's really just a bunch of websites telling people what games they liked the most.

And that's different than the Academy Awards, People's Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Yahoo's List of Best of THe Year, etc., HOW?

Any awards of such manner are always just people voting (unfortunately more often for "business politics" reasons than for actual quality of products, especially considering the Oscars) and therefore "meaningless" -

I'm curious as to what "meaning" you find missing from such designations, and where else that missing "meaning" can be found?

And if you just mean that reviews, awards, etc., should affect a person's own opinions on the game - well, duh.

In so much as any award from a well-advertised and oft-touted prestige, it could be considered a travesty to many.

For those who care about movies and the craft there-of it exists as a legitimate concern that, for example, Marisa Tomei won for My Cousin Vinnie.  For those who DON'T care about awards shows, movies outside of just what entertains them, yeah, it doesn't matter.

So it is a matter of what people care about.  For some who wins GOTY is important - they don't want to see something they consider sub-par garnering accolades.

Like I couldn't care less who got MVP for any sport ever, perhaps you don't think GOTY mattes because you don't care.  But your personal ranking of "relevance" or "importance" doesn't negate those of others.

You think it's silly.  That's fine.  Other's don't.  Difference of opinions and priorities.
