Went with the default Sheploo instead of the name.  Named him after Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr, the 2nd man and first American in space. 

Earthborn appealed to me because I just like the idea of someone from Earth who is exploring the vast galaxy. 
Sole Survivor because out of the three it seemed like the most "typical" person.  He's not a big hero or a ruthless killer hes just a man who does his best to survive.  Chose soldier because it makes the most sense imo.  Romanced Ash because I like her views (pro human but not racist) and she seems more "real" (for lack of a better word) than Miranda or the other LI's

He was the stereotypical hero in ME1.  Paragon to the extreme and always looking to preserve life above all else.  In ME2 however he changed.  His experiences, hardships, and losses have hardened him, changing him to a paragade.  For a while he was headed down a very dark path.  It was only on Horizon after reuniting with his love Ashley that he came to his senses and realized where his path was taking him.  He is still hardened,willing to make sacrifices, and shoot those who deserve it (I can't resist those renegade interrupts) but he has pulled himself back from becoming like Saren or TIM.

The quintessential "me" Shep

Colonist: Justifiable reason for the tragic flaw that every Epic Hero in literature or other mediums have. Loss of parents causes the hero to put all friends and acquaintances at arms length which is the reason for no love interest.

War Hero: Perfect example of my Shep's motivation. I refuse to let what happened to Mindoir happen to anyone else. Edmund Burke's famous quote is exactly my reason for picking this psych profile "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Paragon: Due to my affiliations and actions. Full Paragon Less than 1/5 Renegade ME1, Full Paragon 1/5+ Renegade ME2. ME2 being closer to the real me since every alignment test I take peg me at Neutral Good which is accurate.

After numerous Colonist and one Earthborn playthrough I decided I want my Shepard's mother (if not also her father) to be alive.  I understand the idea and the relative freedom a writer gets from a character having no one their attached to primarily, but sometimes I want there to be cousins, siblings, etc.  It adds a certain element to my character that doesn't exist for the others.  Something that I can cultivate even if it doesn't matter to the overall goal of the story.  For instance if there's to be a moment of shame for a character who has lost their parents and/or doesn't have any siblings or other relatives, the shame is on them.  They can either shrug it off or dwell on it.  In the case of a character that has relatives it becomes more complicated.  Especially if the character decides they'd rather move on than dwell on the shame, but can't because relatives will/can/may know and/or comment on it and how it effects them.  I like thinking about things like that since it gives me a set of limits to play with.

I went with the Sole Survivor psych profile because I liked how it played with the Spacer profile.  Qiyana, because of her biotics and penchant for engineering, rose through the ranks.  It led to an inflated ego (it wasn't unwarranted, but there was very little humility).  Every mission that ended with success gave her more of a boost.  Akuze, however, was the best thing to bring her back down to earth so to speak.  An extremely humbling experience and one she'll live with for the rest of her life wondering what she could have done to save at least one soldier.  Despite how others may have looked at it she feels it was a colossal failure on her part to help out her team.  And frankly I'd rather humility come from outside the familial background especially given how close military groups get.

She's a Sentinel because I like the mix of biotics and tech.  Or actually I grew to like the idea and the versatility it has.  With the way they're described I get the impression that biotics are difficult for humans and if one were to excel at that any other talent or well-honed skill is cake.  It also serves as a good foundation for an inflated ego when you can do two things compared to another's one.

I really don't know who would serve as a good love interest for her.  Liara despite being 106 (108 in ME2) is too young.  Jacob is to conflicted.  Ashley, I don't even know if Qiyana would be open to that at this point.  Even then Ashley is more like a sister.  Maybe one side-effect of being moved from one post to another left her without a desire to make any connections beyond friendship.  I'll see what happens in ME3.

When importing that Shep in ME2, it temporarily renames it to Marc-Antoine. Whether by chance or not, Marc-Antoine just so happens to be the name of two BioWare team members:
Marc-Antoine Matton, the Senior cinematics animator at Bioware for Mass Effect 2 DLC, Mass Effect 2 Arrival DLC, and Mass Effect 3, the Cinematics animator for Mass Effect 2, and a basic animator for Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age, and (believe it or not) Deus Ex 3.
The other one is Marc-Antoine Hamelin, Senior Environment Artist for Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect 2 Arrival DLC, Driver 5, Splinter Cell Conviction and it's Insurgency Map Pack, an Intructor at Centre NAD, an environment artist for Army of Two and Army of Two: TFD, and a lead artist of AoT Veteran Map Pack.

Now for the LI topic. Shepard lost so many of his friends and allies on Akuze that he barred himself from any strong emotional connection to anyone. Throughout ME1 he maintained a strong friendship with all his crew, but nothing ever became romantic.
But.
Dying changes a man. It gives you a new perspective on life, it's fragility, how short it is. But also how amazing it is. He was granted a new go at life, by vowed enemies yes, but nonetheless, he was given a chance to reshape himself into something greater. From his perspective, there is no other set of arms more deserving that those of Tali. It nearly happened with Jack, but her attitude resulted in a somewhat sour relationship between them. Tali (and Garrus) are the only two who have been there for him throughout their time together no matter what pain and suffering they experienced.

I love the earthborn option. Not exactly an angst fest but one that allows for interpretation IMO. I created Charlie with the Huck Finn personality...sassed authority, ran away a LOT from her "parents" an asari and a human male who pulled her off the streets time and time again.

I rolled the war hero because I loved the concept of the scrappy orphan who saves the day! Picked vanguard class for the biotics + soldier combo....

Charlie never expected to fall in love with anyone. Then Therum and boom... it was near instanteous with the young (or so she thought at the time) asari, Liara. She's the antidote for all the dark and twisted stuff she has to do

She HATES things that are taken out of her control. Eden Prime. Elysium. Virmire. Bad things happened on her watch. She lost people there. Never again.

I come from Mindoir, a small colony in the Attican Traverse, and have experienced extreme grief early on in life. Loosing everyone I cared about at a young age has made me into a survivor and I deeply cherish those close to me.

I'm what some would consider a war hero. And between the Skyllian Blitz and striving to stop the collectors, I am quickly accumulating god status. I'm grateful I didn't have my whole team die on Akuze. An individual can only handle so much grief in one life time.

I joined the Alliance military soon after my entire family was killed and trained to be an infiltrator. I quickly became unmatched with a sniper riffle and my hacking skills are extraordinary. After my resurrection, some would call me a sentinel but I still know most of my earlier skills and although I had originally lost some of my touch with the sniper rifle, I can now once again shoot a fly off the wall from two miles away.

I always strive to do what's right, going against the Council, Alliance or Cerberus if need be. But I am willing to make hard chooses when needed, especially if I can see the bigger picture.

I can be elegantly outspoken when need be; and I can say with strong conviction that my friends can depend on me to listen or be there for them when they need me.

Does everything by the book, mass destruction with as few civilian casualties as possible. Loves blowing stuff up, but would stop to get a kitten out of a tree and then give it milk.
