Did anyone else notice the game revolving mainly around fathers and parents? Was this intentional? Miranda's father, Tali's father, Thane as a father, Jacob's father, Grunt's tube father, etc.
What was the point of Bioware doing this? Theories?

liara's father...
it's a pretty male dominated galaxy. we've yet to see a female krogan or turian and even though the asari are an entire race of 'females' they can father as well, so even they aren't fully 'female'. the reapers have only ever spoken with male voices, the collectors seem all male and even the husks, though i'm sure they took a few females there? the geth, who would have no applicable concept of sex, at least look and speak like males and so do the mechs. the only sexually 'even' society i've seen is the quarian, but they're just filthy gypos anyways.

Fathers tend to be important in one's life.

It does appear to be a hangup of this particular group of writers. Why does nobody have any issues with siblings, spouses or business partners? There was at least some of that in ME1, but not in ME2 it appears.

It's not where you come from that matters, it's where you end up. I guess that's what the whole father thing revolves around.
Miranda is trying to get her sister away from her oppressive farther. Jacob realizes his father turned into rubbish and denies him. Grunt, though a supposed 'pure' krogan or 'ultimate' krogan still has a lot to prove despite his genetic material being distilled from the best.
Unresolved father issues, they're a harsh reality in many people's lives even today..or in the future depicted in ME2.

Because screwed up family issues are a very easily understood way to say "this person has issues". Family problems are common in the real world, sad to say. So we can identify with that. And we humans do place a very strong emphasis on our families. So it's a common theme in pretty much every story written by humans, including Mass Effect.
I think it's implied that Garrus has daddy issues too--his father was a highly-respected C-Sec officer and was pretty much the one who pushed Garrus into abandoning Spectre training in favor of joining C-Sec, something you get the impression Garrus always resented. Tali also has issues after she finds out her dad was kind of a traitor working on illegal research... you could argue Legion (and all geth) have family issues with their "parents" the quarians... Morinth and Samara is an example of mommy issues... and Jack's an orphan who was raised by horrible people, so in a sense, Cerberus is her parent. And she's got a LOT of issues about that.
About the only ones who might have a decent family are Spacer Shep, Kasumi, Zaeed, and Mordin!

^ Good things are those that never reach the news. There are a lot of people with probably decent families, ranging from Joker to Saren, maybe? If we don't hear about serious daddy issues, there probably aren't any.

Exactly. It was just kind of weird how the writers decided to focus on father issues for this particular game!

because everyone have or have had a father and thus it's more relatable for all players?

Compare to prevailance of mother issues in Dragon Age universe. Almost every companion in DA:O has lost their mother for some reason or is having bad relations with her. Off the top of my mind: Most Warden origins, Alistair, Leliana, Zevran, Morrigan, Anora, Cailan, and the list goes on.InTheZone wrote...

Any vigilant observer notes that Mass Effect 2 and DA:O are pretty much parrarel stories. They have a massive slew of things in common, ranging from companion personalities to villain.

And thus we find our secret weapon to defeat both the Reapers and the Darkspawn permanently--a magical portal between Thedas and the ME universe!
Although I'm not sure what good ME weapons are going to be against creatures born of magic outside of the physical realm... or what good a few magic spells are going to be against huge machines. But we can always hope.

Because when it;s not about losing your parent, but about having difficult relationship... well, how I put it. It's usually easier with mothers, no? The generic picture of Mom is somone who loves you unconditionally, son or daughter, and cares for you, perhaps a bit too much. Fathers tend to be more ... harsh? And demanding.
