(BG1) I've done neutral/good parties my whole time through the game. Currently i'm trying an evil party. I'm a fighter, lv5, with 3 proficiency in bows, 2 proficiency in large swords. My current party is Me, Kagain, Xzar, Monty, Shar-Teel, and Viciona. I've never gotten this far with an evil party, and I  think i might need to revise my party for later in the game (in chapter 3 atm). My best game was 2 fighters, 3 archers, and a mage. Absolutely dominated the entire game. I'm finding evil a lot harder, because the only good evil NPC's are melee based. Any suggestions on what i should do with my party?

I've never used Edwin in BG1. I wonder how he sizes up against Xzar. Edwin/Edwina is cetainly the strongest mage in BG2, as Viconia is the best cleric if taken as early as possible. And you do have Quail and Tiax down the road. I wonder if your mages and clerics should stock up on animal Summons to try to compensate for your lack of muscle?

Edwin is by far the best mage in the game since he gets 2 extra spells per level. Viconia is a much better cleric than Tiax, but Tiax has an excellent special ability. Shar-Teel works best dualclassed to Thief. Personally, i like to SK Vicky to a cleric/mage, but she works equally well as a pure cleric or a cleric/thief. Kagain is the best tank in the game, with godly hitpoints and saving throws.

Meaning you have the best mage, the best tank and the best cleric if you play an evil party.

but if you play evil, no donating to churches to get that rep up lol. Awfully fun having an army of flaming fist engaging you everytime you change map. Though it help XP a lot after a while

I second everything Flamedance just said. Viciona as a Cleric/Mage is almost meant to be.

As for your party, looks like a pretty solid group to me.
And yes Edwin is the best pure class mage in both games (although I prefer Xzar's ... personality), he is specialist Mage so gets and extra spell per level, plus his amulet gives him an extra two spells per level, that's three bonus spells per level - couple this with the Ring of Wizardry (of which there are two) and he pretty much gets and endless supply of level 1 spells, basically he can just continuously cast Magic Missile non-stop.
I had him in my last BG1 game as a Sorcerer with two Rings of Wizardry, he had about 28 level 1 spells, it was hilarious.

But if you're not happy with your group you could ditch Kagain or Shar-Teel and replace either with Edwin. Since you're a fighter yourself, you'd only really need two tanks. Two arcane spell casters (Edwin and Xzar) is a great boon.
You could even ditch Montaron and dual class Shar-Teel over like Flamedance said, she then becomes the best backstabbing Thief (possibly best Thief altogether) in the game.

Or ditch Montaron and Xzar and then pick up Tiax and Edwin. Tiax is decent enough and has the best special ability out of all the NPCs, he may not be as good a Thief as Montaron, but he's also a Cleric, which is handy since your group are somewhat handicapped in that department.

Or alternatively you can ditch Montaron and Xzar, and pick up Eldoth and then later Skie. Sadly Eldoth isn't that great, so I usually use SK to up his stats, Skie on the other hand is solid, her only downfall is how late you acquire her (and her somewhat irritating voiceset). Be warned though Shar-Teel and Eldoth will eventually come to blows.

Maybe even Faldorn? Although totally useless and aquired quite late, a Druid in the group may prove useful. She's more Evil than Neutral so in a role playing sense she would fit in.

When I try and come up with the 'perfect party' I split it into four components: Divine, Arcane, Thieving and Tanking.
A Cleric/Mage for example would be 1/2 Divine and 1/2 Arcane, whereas a pure Fighter would be 1 Tanking.
I try to get something as close as this for my group: 1+1/2 Divine   1+1/2 Arcane   1/2 Thieving   2 Tanking

And your group at the moment is: Divine 1   Arcane 1   Tanking 3+1/2   Thieving 1/2

Thanks all. I like Xzars absolute mad destructive personality, and i hate Edwin's which is which is why don't have him. I wasnt sure if dualing Shar-Teel was worth it but i think i'm going to now.
Should i give Viciona a sling because she has the 19 dext? Currently she has the Ankheg Armor from nashkel and the warhammer +2 (i love that weapon) so her total lack of strength isnt too bad.

Viconia is meant to sling, she will be far more efficient at the back slinging and casting spells than up front (badly) swinging a warhammer and being interrupted during casting. Although you've kitted her out well, the Ankheg armour is perfect for her.

When you do dual Shar-Teel over to Thief explore as much of the wilderness as possible. That way she can gain her Thief levels quickly and then eventually regain her Fighter levels (without having to open a single lock or disarm a single trap).

And the best time to dual her would be level 7, so you get the extra 1/2 attack per round, at least I think that's the deal with BG1 (you are playing BG1 right? Not Tutu?)
