Well, its a good question, why doesnt it effect the crew like it did the scientists? But since ME3 isnt out yet, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

it's prothean, not reaper, so you're safe, it's completely harmless. what information it may hold is a bigger question, the last one you encountered gave us information that the protheans were studying prehistoric man, this one has yet to yield any secrets.

Its a Prothean sphere, similar to the one found on Eletania in ME1. When you activate the spehere opn Eletania, it gives Shepard a vision

It didn't affect the scientists.  You should go re-read the logs there.

it's totally optional, kinda like an easter egg, you know something special they put in there to find randomly. the walkthrough or the wiki will be able to show exactly you how to get there but you'll need to complete the consorts mission first and get the trinket. it's an intriguing side note but not essential. as for the sphere in ME2 that does nothing at all, no visions or knowledge, just a wobbling paper weight.

Interesting note though, the sphere on Elania DOES have a plot flag. ME2 ignores it, but it's there.  So, it will be interesting if you did get it to see if it has any bearing on ME3.
