My system: Windows 7 x64, 8GB, i5 2600k, GeForce 580 1.5GB, NVidia driver 280.26, 256GB SSD

I'm currently running DX11, high detail, very high textures (from download), 8x AA, no Anisotropic, otherwise default settings.

I've tried reducing the detail and running full screen and windowed.

In all cases (so far), the game crashes occassionally.  Usually this is simultaneous to a crash in the Nvidia device drivers (which recover, but leave DA2 dead).  Othertimes it simply seems to hang using 25% of CPU (i.e. 100% of one core).

Usually, it's running around that causes this - i.e not during a battle, nor during a save - just looking around the world.

I've made it pretty far - am exploring the outdoors near Kirkwall.  But the crashes seem to be much more common over time.

I started the game on 1.00, but patched to 1.03 today because of thye more frequent crashes / hangs.  This made no difference - in fact, the hangs are more frequent now than before.

I tried disabling autosaves (in case that would help) - no dice.

Any thoughts / ideas?  It's a fun game, but it's crashing a lot, which really breaks the flow.

This PC is running very low temps, and the video card is not OCd (temps = 30c @ idle, 40c @ full load).  The GTX 580 runs around 40 idle, 50 full load.

Thanks for any ideas you might have!!!

Solved?

Since switching to DX9, I've not seen a crash.

Most likely issue is Nvidea drivers and DA2 conflicting....

Probably. I just played for several hours without a glitch @ DX9. Too bad.

My last rig was 2x 4780 1GB. I wonder if switching to NVidia was a poor choice?

Considering the issues Nvidea has had with drivers lately(last 2-3 years) yeah, it probably was. I hope they can get their rectal cranium inversion moment(years) over with, because they used to be good, but because of their issues I went with a 6950 last time a few months ago.

There are new beta drivers for nvidia out atm 285.27. Got a MSI GTX580 OC myself and playing on max settings in DX11 now, no crashes whatsoever.

not sure it was the driver though i also raised the voltage on my card a bit, that mightve been it aswell.

@Paranid - I'll give those drivers a shot. So far I've not messed with OCing my 580. I already OCed my CPU, and it's been rock solid (4.4GHz i5). I wanted to give that some time to be sure all is well before (if ever) possibly destabilizing the 580 (makes debugging an issue like this one that much more difficult - extra variable).

shouldve mentioned my 580 came OCed out of the factory :P didnt touch the settings myself, only increased voltage a bit which seems DX11 needed (Core voltage from 1000 to 1050 mV), DX9 was never any problem on any game.
