Your female Shepard is in a lesbian relationship if they are with an asari, you deal with it.
It wasn't a joke. I'm fairly sure he was married (I do know he had at least one brother), as nearly all men of that age and that time period were.I've recently discovered that I'm bad at detecting some jokes...so just saying, he wasn't married either...and if that was sarcasm/joke, please tell me.

But I do agree with the OP that Bioware shouldn't retcon characters who have only expressed an interest in the opposite sex for two games. My issue isn't with there being bi or gay characters in game, but with characters being retconned to fill the gay/bi romance quota. I would also facepalm if Bioware went the Dragon Age 2 route and just had practically your entire squad be bisexual.
Bioware's best bet would be to have new characters like Vega, who are a blank slate, be the bi or gay romance options. The only exceptions to this should be characters from previous games who have expressed an interest in the same sex (Jack) or characters who never expressed an interest in either sex, one way or the other.
I have known gay men who have dated women, even married women, to hide their sexuality. Outwardly, yes, they appeared quite straight... until they came out of the closet. Not talking about blokes does not equal "he isn't gay".
And the only truly bisexual companion in DA2, as in the only one who openly expresses an interest in women and men despite Hawke's gender / if Hawke romances them or not, is Isabela. The other companions' sexuality is ambiguous, they do not openly express an interest in both genders.

Is that a retcon? Because in ME1 they were technically all female.jreezy wrote...

Explain to me your point because I've only read anything you've ever said to me in sarcasm.
Perhaps we could discuss our confusion with each other via PM but last I knew, I was blocked by you.

There are no know gay characters in the game at all...If you decide to define a character's sexuality as ambiguous unless he or she has expressed an interest in the same sex, you've just taken heterosexual characters out of the game. Now every character is either gay, bi, or an unknown who is possibily gay or bi but in the closet.
Why do you need to have explicit heterosexuals exist so much?So for simplicity's sake I think a character's sexuality should be defined by their expressed interests over the last two games. Characters that have previously only expressed an interest in Sheps of the opposite sex, and who have only mentioned previous heterosexual romances, should return in ME3 as heterosexual.

Actually, I give up. In fact, yes. I advocate that Garrus ask, outright and repeatedly, for buttsex from male Shepard. And have the sex scene show the effects of barbed turian genitalia as graphically as possible.

Sex is not the same as gender. Being sexually female does not mean you identify as a woman. They are monogendered.

Maybe? Anyway Liara says gender has no meaning to her species so technically they aren't female, especially as humans understand it.Quole wrote...

There have been inconsistencies within the codex, but this is not one of them. The Codex says "female", the characters say "female", and the creators have said "female". I think that about covers it. They are a race a females, both by description and biologically (as this fiction goes, at any rate).Quole wrote...
