I am aware that it is difficult to get high friendship levels with both these companions if you wish to side with mages.

And my Hawke *is* a mage...

My question is "how hard"... I want to side with mages in a few sidequests, is it still possible to get a high friendship with either?

Or do I have to select every pro-friendship line in quests to get near it?

Is it possible to have both for endgame in friendship if I side with the mages...

With Carver, you have such a short time to raise it, so you don't have a chance to side with mages with him in the party, I've only done it once, but playing it that way makes Hawke a hypocrite as a mage. With Fenris his companion quests and conversations give plenty of opportunity to raise it all the way if you choose the right options.

Edit: With Carver, I don't think it is actually possible to raise his friendship all the way but you can raise it high enough to get "friend" dialogue for later in the game.

Awesome... thanks.

With Carver, is it possible to get in the friend range without choosing all possible "pro-Carver" options in quests?

Or do I have a little leeway? When exactly does he count as "friendly" - as in, how far into the friend guage does he need to be... an inexact question, I know.

I'm not sure how far into the friend side you need to be. It's difficult, you have to play a certain way with him, otherwise no it is not possible if you are not pro-carver choices. You're kinda "suppose" to be the rival, like you're set up to be bethany's friend. Based on the backstory of the siblings and carver feeling like he's always in the shadow of hawke, But yeah, you have to go out of your way to be pro-carver.

I'm working on a guide that outlines how to Friendship Fenris while still staying Pro-Mage. That being said, my "Rival Fenris to 50% in Act 1" guide (in my sig) has some friendship tagged, and is a good start on how not to friendship him. You can always take a look to know what not to do to get rivalry :)

I've... never friended Carver. Not once. I.. don't even think I'd want to, though for my "playthrough-for-guide" I did manage to get more friendship with him then I ever expected to ;p

You don't need a guide to get full firendship with Fenris, it's easy.

There are some quests where you can earn friendship with Fenris without turning in any mages. Just take a hard stance against slavers and blood magic. His personal quests and dialogue are also good times to gain points. You can just lie to him about your stance on magic. Look up an approval guide if you want to see specifics.

I don't think it's possible to make Carver your friend and it really doesn't matter. His reaction to Hawke depends more on what happens to him after the deep roads than his approval level.

You'd think so, but Fenris' friendship is actually one of the biggest reasons why people don't like him. It's easy to get stuck in the nutural zone with him by being pro-mage and anti-slavery. Which most people end up being. ;p

So I figure, I write it out (like I did w/ the rivalry @50% for act 1) and then when someone complains, I can link it to them and be all "See, its easy!"

;p

I'm working on a Friendship with Fenris while remaining pro-mage. It's key to be supportive during dialogues with Fenris and to avoid bringing him on certain quests.

I've never rivaled Fenris. Of course, I've played through so many times that I know who to take on each quest to get the friendship/rivalry results I want. Now that I see that in letters, I feel a little weird about it. :P

If you can get Carver into the 25-50 range that's generally enough to trigger his Friend-specific dialog in later quests. Legacy makes it way easier, if you have it, there are some good gains there that don't involve mages at all. If you've just got the base game it's tricky and you kind of will have to be a hypocrite, there just aren't enough Friend points from just pro-Ferelden anti-authority to get him up from that starting 50 Rival.

I just shamelessly use the console, myself.

Nonsense, the very first time you meet him he leaves the impression of distrust in mages, if you bring him on quests where you intent to be pro-mage you're just dumb. Posted Image

The points from his act 1 conversation + the slaver in darktown and Act 2 pretty much settles it, no need to bring him along to save mages. Posted Image

My first run through I played as a mage and played it totally straight in that I took Fenris with me most of the time and didn't deliberately leave him behind just because it was a mage orientated quest. By the end of Act 1 I was heading along the rivalry path but during Act 2 it swung back the other way. It took most of the Act 2 to get him to the point where my friendship romance would trigger (50%) and he would bed me. However, I didn't get to full friendship until almost the end of Act 3. So it is possible the be pro-mage, a mage and still achieve friendship with Fenris but it takes a long time and you generally need to choose the diplomatic dialogue options, even when he is chewing you out about something mage related.

Naw. You can 100% friendship fenris and still be 100% pro-mage by the end of act 2. Which I'm writing up. totally.. when I'm not being lazy and writing fic >.>

I think it is impossible to 100% Friend with Carver. Maybe the new DLC will change that.
