I just started playing a character who uses a shield and sword. However I notice that when using my abilities in combat on occasion the ability menu will have that "Shadowy" effect on it, as if you were out of combat and were unable to do this. So I'm in combat and sometimes it will light up to where I can use it. Sometimes when I can use an ability the menu will go "shadow" and I can't use non-recharging abilities unless i literally run away from my foe and run back to light it up again.

And important to note: NO I'm not out of range (how could I bet if I used one ability and can't another?)

AND NOT out of stamina.

is this part of the class or is it a bug?

Does the shadowy effect actually stop you using the buttons?

You can turn off the effect on the options menu - select "Force HUD" on the interface screen.

Now the menu will be there all the time and wont fade...

But you *should* be able to use your hotkeys and radial menu whether it has become transluscent or not.

Are you sure an enemy is actually targeted? Sometimes you have to twiddle the view around to get an enemy "in sights" - as most offensive skills need a target. You need to be able to see the crossed-swords icon (and not just the health bar) on an enemy.

Are you on PC or console? The reason I'm asking is that if you're on pc, you'll need to rightclick to target an enemy, then choose a talent, say cleave or scatter, then left-click to select to use that talent. [In DAO, I had to get used to this....and in DA2, I sometimes forgot how it worked ;) ).

Also, there's a cooldown period to those talents meaning that after you've used them once, you'll have to wait x number of seconds, typicaly 20-40 seconds before you can use that specific talent again. Also, look at your stamina bar. If you're out of stamina, you can't use a specific talent, say scatter or whirlwind as talents take away your stamina. Having stamina potions handy is necessary....

the hud pops up during battle so i can see my list of attacks, but the shadow effect over it (Meaning when theres no enemies) will appear during battle!

Yeah my enemies are targeted. I can throw regular attacks but I won't be able to use my abilities unless i literally back away and come back in. After using one or if I'm lucky two, the abilitiy menu will act how it is if your enemy wasn't in range/targeted.

Console.

As I said I'm in range and my stamina is full! As for the talent, when the cooldown starts, there is a little timer over the ability that shows when your ability will be ready again. Unless all of the abilities in sword and shield have a cool down if you use one.

Example: If I use assault, the cooldown timer on it starts and the rest of the abilities (like shield bash) will go dark as if I was out of range (Whlist my character is still doing regular attacks). For me to re-enable it I have to walk away and come back to use the ability not in cool down

it's a little silly but it's to do with the range of the abilities i think.
the auto-attack range is slightly larger than the ability range, so in order to use your abilities you need to stop autoattacking and move forward a little more. i don't think there's a need to walk away first

after my auto attack was turned off, problem solved. Oddly this didn't occur with my 2 handed weapon

Silly question, but do you have enough stamina to run the attacks?? If you are too low on stamina it will grey out the abilities until you regin enough back. If you are running too many passives you never have enough for some abilities........

again as he said, stamina is full(or enough to do any abilities), all abilities fade even when hes attacking and not on cool down.

if i know what you are saying, i believe i do encounter this problem to, ive only noticed it so far for a 2h, if you can describe the enemy(ies) i would definitely know, instead of simply running away, you can stop attacking and run forward, and activate the ability, but thats just another way of doing it
