It's not really an argument over 'straight' as I have yet to see anyone say a male Shepard shouldn't be able to romance all of the female LIs and vice versa for a straight FemShep with the male LIs.
I'm hoping you're joking here...

There is always a moment with any LI where you either pursue or reject a relationship. I do not want to have to deal with that for every crew member that is the same gender as my Shepard. If they can write it in such a way that you can pursue a relationship with anyone, but not be aware of it with the ones that do not interest you, then I am all for it. For me personally it is a question of believability and immersion alone.

Kaiser's idea for a Settings option to turn it on/off, which would still allow it, was rejected for being "homophobic." It seems no one can be pleased.

By making characters bisexual, this type of dynamic and indeed much versatility in interaction will be butchered for the gratification of a few. Not every conversation has to be afflicted by sexual tension, and relationships don't have to be homogenized to keep everyone happy.
Character consistency is another ball game altogether, and basically your opinion here depends on whether you think such a transition is reasonable in a sci-fi epic. I'll just say that although I acknowedge there's more room for progression and twisting player creation of belief through immersion, I still think that authorial and hence character integrity must still exist in some form.
This idea that video games exist simply to gratify everyoneand not to simply stand as a great work of art/literature with enrapturing characters, is going to stagnate the industry from being compared to more traditional forms of storytelling.

I think the toggle option would only work and not be offensive is if you could toggle off straight stuff, too. I personally didn't like the way fem!Shep flirts with Jacob when you just want to kill his daddy.

Well, that might be a bit extensive as it would need multiple sets of dialogue for FemShep there, but I have always argued for an option to turn each category of romances on or off.Darth Krytie wrote...

Those were recorded because the team didn't bother to check the "Meer/Hale only" boxes. They considered it just including then because they were already there, but felt that the quality of these lines was lacking or something like that.ToastPants wrote...

That isn't really bigotry. I mean I think 2 males having sex is pretty gross since I am in no way attracted to the same sex but I don't think they should be forbidden to do it. Its not my problem.

It creates a vicious circle whereby those who oppose the contents of a thread end up it's source of power and growth.
It's why internet trolls are so incredibly successful.

They're not REALLY ME fans to be honest. If something like the inclusion of a gay character is enough to detract you from the Mass Effect experience, then you're probably not a big fan to begin with.

Though the romance subplots are great I also adore the platonic relationship WITHOUT the potential for romantic complication. Wrex and Garrus have always been my favourites because of the absence of romantic insinuation (thank god), and the alpha-male, "bro" vibe they propagate.

I agree. I also don't want to get ninjamainced by Garrus just because i want to get to know him.....but not in the "romantic" type of way.

In short: it's because everybody is too goddamn invested in something as peripheral to the gameplay and story as the frigging romances are. Look, I play them, I enjoy them, and hell, Morrigan from DA:O is one of my favorite video game characters ever partly because of the insight gained into her from the romance, but people really need to repeat the MST3K mantra to themselves.
