Ok, so a while back my video card stopped working. I finally got a new card but I was getting driver conflicts which forced me to re-install windows. Tonight I finally got around to re-installing DA2. I got up to the part where it wanted to register my game and after I entered my email address and password, I got the message "We're sorry, an error has occurred. There is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall your game."

I'm a bit frustrated, but I decide I might as well do what it says. I uninstalled the game, deleting the previous settings but keeping the old save files. I then re-installed. This time I didn't patch before running the game. I go through the initial configuration, it does its release date check, and suddenly I get the same message as before.

Seriously, am I doing something wrong here? I tried doing a search for the same problem, but all I found were threads full of people who had the problem but had no solutions. What do I need to do to make the game run again on a system that, with the exception of a new video card, is esentially the same one that ran it last time?

Overall, it will be easiest for everyone if you approach this as if the game never did run; complete the entire normal problem report, just as described in the "Before anything else" sticky, and let the few of us visiting the forum in its off peak summer season work from there.

1. What version of the game are you playing: physical disc
      Configuration Utility | Game Tab
           * DragonAge2.exe                  v1.03
             DragonAge2Launcher.exe    v1.01
             DragonAge2Config.exe        v1.03
             Uninstall Dragon Age 2.exe  v1.00
2. System Details
      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab
           * Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     E8500  @ 3.16GHz / 3160 MHz / 3.99 GB
           * AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series / 1.00 GB / CATALYST 11.8
           * Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) / 6.0.1.5898
      Configuration Utility | Platform Tab
           * Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (SP1, though that's not listed)
           * DirectX 11 (Feb2010)

Details about your problem.
1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
      Cannot launch the game after installing
2. When did the problem start occurring?
      As soon as I try to launch, I think when the game is trying to check with EA's servers to activate.
3. Where does your problem occur?
      In between launching and the game starting
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
      I installed the game on my system, patched to the lastest version and installed the High Resolution Texture Pack. I then tried to launch the game. I got to a point where it wanted me to activate the game. I entered my username and password. It was after that, on a similar-looking screen, that I first got the error. I tried to uninstall, then re-install my game. This time, I tried launching without patching. I received the exact same error, this time without being asked to enter my username/password. Re-patching (but not installing High Res Textures) did nothing to fix the problems.
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
      Nothing aside from patches.

Is this enough detail or do you need more?

Have you moved the documents folder or program folders to anywhere non-standard??
Are you doing a basic install, instead of doing a custom install?

Can you launch the config utility? If so, then check to see if anything is out of line, and make sure the serial license number is there and correct.

You may also create a restore point then use a registry cleaner to make sure it is all gone and then reinstall, with AV disabled.

Also make sure UAC is disabled.

Ok, I got it to work. There must've been a problem with my disk or something because I used Origin to download and install the game and it worked right off the bat. I don't quite get it, but hey, as long as it's working. I'm just glad my ISP's bandwidth cap hasn't kicked in yet.

I'm having the same problem unfortunately, but I haven't been able to fix it by using Origin. It fails to work via the disc based install or Origin.

Operating System: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 3GHz
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Video Card: 2x ATI Radeon HD5830 1GB CrossfireX (Catalyst 11.9 Drivers)
Audio: Via Technologies HD (6.0.1.9400)
DirectX 11

DragonAge2.exe v1.03

--What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?

"We're sorry, an error has occured. There is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall your game."

--When did the problem start occurring?

Upon installation via Disc AND Origin.

--Where does your problem occur?

Attempting to actually play Dragon Age II.

--What are the steps in replicating the problem?

Click Play, it goes past Release Date verification, and then error.

--Have you modified your game in any way?

1.03 Patch, High Res Texture Pack.

With the new patches I have reinstalled the game as well. I am using Win 7 64 bit. Thing is I am now trying to keep all my games on a seperate and bigger hard drive. Which means moving the game to a non standard location. Not the usualy program(x86) location.

I have the newest patch and the High Texture patch installed. I click play and get a CTD then a BSOD. Saying my display drivers have failed. They are all up to date ATI, due to me reinstalling my system last weekend.

Edit: Managed to fix it for some reason the game doesn't like widescreen mods and vsync on at the sametime.

I've just bought the PC version of DA2 through Origin, and I'm having the same exact problem. everything else has gone smoothly, until I hit "Play". I have no mods installed, not even the latest patch. I did try installing the patch to see if it would help, and it didn't. I've reinstalled it three times now.

I have the same issue. The game does not start, but installs fine. I get a BEX error from the MSVCR80.dll and have tried everything here and on the Microsoft help desk and no luck. Have a email chain with EA help desk but still not working.

There have been more prior messages naming this error message than one with no resolution, I feel certain. I read one or more that were concluded positively, but do not recall what the solution was. You will need to do more searching, just ignore the on-site Finder and use a professional search instead, just add the redirector to the criteria:
