It seems the only real way (From what I've researched) to keep Isabella in your party from leaving is to have high enough approval. However to get such high approval you have to flirt wth her so much you're getting into a romance with her.

Though I do want to keep her in the party I don't want a romance

so how much approval points does it take to keep her from leaving in "to catch a thief"?

You don't have to romance her, in fact she's my least romanced female NPC (the guys both got one playthrough to see what they were like). So you don't need to romance her.

The general rule of thumb with her (and Varric) is sarcastic/charming options. Obviously some small flirting wouldn't hurt, if you mind to do that. She (again like Varric) likes taking jobs for money or you asking about payment (Aveline values altruistic behavior in contrast).

The Dreamer mission (its name escapes me at the moment) seems made to farm approval points. Have her betray you and forgive her and you'll gain something like 15-20 points just for that. Get her to 50 Friend or Rival and she stays with you.

For actual specifics: this is every occasion where you're awarded approval points with Isabela.

And don't forget to do her Questioning Beliefs quest after that!

It's the Questioning Beliefs conversation that flags her to remain. If you don't go and talk to her for Questioning Beliefs at the Hanged Man in Act 2 before To Catch a Thief, it doesn't matter what her approval rating is. She'll leave unless you complete her Questioning Beliefs quest. This isn't that difficult; all you need is 50 approval either way, and there's more than 150 approval points available for both sides with her in acts 1 and 2. If you have more questions, try the FAQ in my sig.

As suggested above, if you don't romance her then at least make sure you take her into the Fade and then forgive her as this gives you plenty of plus points. Worst thing to do is not to flirt with her, take her into the Fade and then chew her out. This happened with my girl Hawke who was trying to get Sebastian (so not allowed to flirt with anyone) and then got angry with Bella for betraying her for a ship. I presume it should be possible to keep her provided you have high enough rivalry points but I couldn't seem to manage that either. For a friendship path the easiet course is to flirt with her and then simply refuse to sleep with her - I did this with my latest male Hawke and while she had some cutting remarks to make about this, it didn't seem to lose me any friendship points.

In addition to what others have suggested, I always have to tell Isabela to give the Qunari the book, then play dumb with the Arishok.

I used to be able to tell her she could have the book (and had the friendship maxed, or close to maxed), and she'd come back, but after one of the patches, that stopped working (XBox), and I had to switch tactics.

I didn't romance her and she is pretty easy to get friendship points with. The Magistrates Order side quest gives you +15 points if Hawke take the middle "I don't get paid enough to do this" then Fenris offers to kill Kelder. Don't let him, you kill Kelder gets +15 from Isabella. She hates men who abuse women.

The quest Finders Keepers also gives you +15 points with Isabela. Accepting the quest+5 and telling Martin where the good are "Woodrow's warehouse." Isabela: friendship (+10). I had her at 100% and still found a way to say we need to give the Qunari their book back. There are times when the diplomatic works best but in general she likes humor. I also never had to flirt.

if i remember correctly you can actually say no when she wants to jump in the sack and she will still give approval, but i may need to see it again or someone else needs to clarify

I'm currently trying to do it on the rivalry path, that is keep her sans romance, which is a bit hard as it isn't in Alys Hawke's nature to be very confrontational even if she disaproves of Isabella.

I have gotten her to stay without flirting with her though on the friendship path.
