I seemed to have found this out by accident of sorts.

I ran into a group of enemies, killed them got aorund 250xp then shortly after, another group, killed them and got 250 xp. 500xp total

I missed an item, had to reload, went through it and encountered the same group of enemies  and got the second group in to. After slaying ALL of them I got a single 250xp.

What's the deal?

I'm not sure how to pose the answer, but here's how it works. The mechanics can be most easily noticed in the quests where you have to kill the gangs in Hightown/Lowtown/Docks. Each "battle" contains a predetermined number of enemies over 3 waves, and the total amount of experience per "battle" is about 300xp. The thing is, the "battles" can be broken down into smaller "battles" by avoiding waves or pulling enemies then exiting combat. However the total experience gain for killing all of the enemies for the "battle" still accumulates to 300xp.

I've never tried to pull multiple groups to kill them all at the same time, but I wonder if that would cause you to still only gain 300xp. That would corroborate what you mentioned happened to you.

With that being said, I've noticed big swings in total XP gain when going through an area. This could be from killing enemies too fast and thus not seeing an extra wave that's coming, or some other reason. I've thought the experience mechanics were always a little buggy in that regard. I'd like to think it all evens out in the end.

Looks like it's per battle, to me.

It's per battle, as you aren't given xp until everyone is dead after a particular fight.

Yes you are given xp for whoever was killed at the end of combat. The game does not wait until you've killed everyone in the encounter before awarding xp. It's just not distributed evenly. For example, if you kill 19 out of 20 gang members in one of those quests, the game will award you an amount closer to half of the total xp available in the encounter. Killing that last enemy will net you the remainder. However it doesn't seem to work this way all the time.

For most part, at least, it does give xp per battle. Otherwise, the seemingly endless waves of enemies on nighmare difficulty would allow you to max out your characters by grinding xp.

thendcomes is correct, though I'd like to add that what's happening isn't that 19/20 enemies award one amount of experience while the last awards a radically different amount of experience: what's happening is that you're being awarded some XP per kill (or per wave maybe?) and then a further XP bonus for "completing the encounter."

I like this in theory, but it seems silly in practice, because the only reason you wouldn't complete an encounter is weirdness stemming from part positioning vs. enemy spawn locations. I don't know... I just wish there were more options on how to approach each encounter. Maybe a way to stop certain waves that awards a bonus.

Or, have "scout" type enemies that trigger the larger combat if they detect you... but give you a chance to kill them before they alert more waves (stealth, perhaps, or a massive attack type-of-deal).

And, obviously, nothing should be true for every encounter ever. The waves get tiresome, because they're so constant. Encounters should be fresh.

DIfficulty has no effect on waves.

There are no opportunities to grind xp in DA2. There is a finite amount of enemies in the game and there is no difference when changing the difficulty setting.

Yes this is what I intended to convey. Sorry for not being clear.
