In Witch Hunt, The Warden can disappear with Morrigan into the Eluvian. At the end of Dragon Age 2, Leliana and Cassandra can address that The Warden has disappeared. The Warden can help choose a new ruler for Ferelden, fulfilling a similar role to Aldenon who aided Calenhad in bringing together the warring teyrnirs into one nation. Given the Chantry of Andraste's refusal for the royal boon that is requested by The Warden, and his subsequent disappearance, it's certain to cause some speculation as to why Ferelden's savior has disappeared from the nation and city-state he rescued, especially since he seems to be the most powerful Andrastian mage with his own army, title, and city when Chantry law forbids mages from such practices.

According to the codex entry "Robes of the Pretender," the Circle mages tell the story of Aldenon's disappearance and King Calenhad's regret about letting the Chantry of Andraste gain control over his nation: "As the Chantry's hold on the kingdom grew, and Aldenon's rebel mages were claimed one by one, the great Calenhad came to regret letting the Circle form in his kingdom. Certainly he missed his old friend's counsel." The tale says that the King disappeared searching for Aldenon, who disappeared after (then) Teyrn Calenhad accepted the assistance of the Chantry and the templars.

Given how The Warden from the Circle can request that his people be emancipated and eventually disappears, could the mages view the Hero of Ferelden as a modern day Aldenon?

That would imply a human and reasonable position in the game when it comes to mages and would actually involve and imply that mages actually have human rights. Not going to happen given what we've been told from certain writers of late.

With the events addressed in Asunder, where many of the several hundred mages seem to respond negatively to Wynne's presence (because she persuaded the College of Enchanters in favor of keeping the Circles of Magi from splitting from the Chantry), it made me imagine how those reactions would be colored in a universe where Wynne's companion, The Warden who become the Hero of Ferelden, asked the new ruler of Ferelden to free the nation's mages. Wouldn't Wynne's views be seen as a betrayal to The Warden? Would mages view The Warden as a modern day Aldenon, arguing in favor of mages being treated equally? I wonder how those same mages would view the Hero of Ferelden (from the Circle of Ferelden) in light of being a popular and famous mage who asked Ferelden's new ruler to emancipate his people from the Chantry of Andraste and the Order of Templars.

The Magi boon was significant enough to lead to no one trying to establish an independent Circle of Orzammar (that would transpire otherwise), despite the Chantry refusing to emancipate Ferelden's mages. Despite the Chantry's refusal, what followed was the Hero of Ferelden being given the important position of Warden-Commander of Ferelden, with the de facto position of the Arl of Amaranthine. Nobles swearing fealty to a politically powerful mage, having command over an entire army, and governing an entire city should speak volumes in an era where mages are prohibited from inheriting a title, being a parent to a child, and confined to living in Circle Towers.

While Awakening and Witch Hunt never addressed the implications of the Hero of Ferelden making his royal boon for the Circle of Ferelden public, or being the most politically powerful mage in Andrastian society, one would have to imagine that it would have serious implications, especially when Hawke can be told (at the Hanged Man) about the new ruler of Ferelden's proclamation that Ferelden's mages have earned the right to govern themselves. Wouldn't it reach the attention of Knight-Commander Meredith that a mage was now the neighboring Arl of Amaranthine? Wouldn't the Circles of Magi in the Andrastian nations have strong reactions to such events? Wouldn't mages all across the Andrastian nations be seeking out the Hero of Ferelden, perhaps hoping that he would step in to be a leader in the mage rebellion, as Aldenon was a leader of mages rebelling against the encroaching Chantry forces after their arrangement with Calenhad?

Aldenon seems to be a significant figure among Circle mages, given his hand in helping to create Ferelden with then Teyrn Calenhad. And I would imagine some mages might hope the Hero of Ferelden would continue where Aldenon left off. The legendary mage seemed to have a vision to create a kingdom long before he even met Calenhad, since he proclaimed his vision to establish a nation to Tenedor the Elder, who he served before he even met Teyrn Calenhad: "I am the beginning and the end. I am luckbinder, spellweaver, and the keeper of secrets. And I am here to build a kingdom. I am Aldenon the Wise, and if you haven't heard of me yet... never can you say the same again."

This is an angle I'd love to see pursued in DA3. I have an elf mage warden with Leliana romance and mage male hawke as my 'canon' and plan to make all my protagonists mages in my main DA playthroughs. I'd love to see that discussed in game.

It probably won't be, seeing as the vast majority of possible options for Wardens have them as non-mages. Plus, the Warden could be a hunter of their own kind. Having this kind of plot development would narrow the "canon" choice for the Warden to "mage."

Plus, I doubt anyone outside the Circle knows about Aldenon. He's likely be written off long ago as a myth, or replaced in the official history with another figure.

Anders certainly mentions mage wardens it if you argue enough with him. But perhaps the Fereldan mages will, escpially if Alistar makes use of the chaos after da2 to grant the boon.

Well, in the novel "Asunder" a First Enchanter Irving participates in the Circle convent in the White Spire at 9:40 Dragon, soooo ...

Of course the canon future of Ferelden's circle with regard to the upcoming mage-templar conflict is still open, though - and you could always engage in "what if" scenarios, something which I like a lot as well.
