Hi everyone, i played BG way back when, but never really got in to it. I have recently started up again with Big World Project so i am starting through 1 then going on to 2.

I would appreciate a few tips as i am, not finding it difficult particularly, but i think you will acknowledge that it can be slightly overwhelming when you first start. I have just done the Nashkel mines bit. I did hang around Beregost a bit and did a few side missions but not many, i have not found Bassilus for example.
btw, i am a fighter mage.

These are the first things i would like help with:

1. Is there a way to revive a party member who you have removed from your party? Minsc died in the Nashkel mines just before i got Edwin so i swapped them. Please don't tell me he's gone forever, he was quite useful!

2. Can someone please give me a quick run-down of armour classes or point me in the direction of a useful guide? I am finding it hard to keep track of which is the best armour etc.

3. Ajantis keeps threatening to leave if we continue on the path we are, is this normal? i haven't done anything bad!

Thank you for your help:)

A full Big World install by somebody who doesn't know the game by heart? That is kind of asking for trouble...

The only way of "reviving" him now would be to cheat in a completely new version of him.
Sorry.

You don't need to remember how good every kind of armor is. That's what the descriptions are for. They will all say something like AC: 1 or AC: +2 (even though it's -2, but that would sound negative, wouldn't it?).
In any case, the lower the better, just like with your THAC0 (To Hit AC: 0).

3. Ajantis keeps threatening to leave if we continue on the path we are, is this normal? i haven't done anything bad!

Well, what's your reputation?
Ajantis is a good guy, so he likes reputations of 15+ and he will leave if it drops below 3.

Indeed, but not playing it for a very long time i thought i would pick it up again fairly easily, but it's been too long!
I was sold on the recommendation by someone that it would be very easy to set up, and it was to be fair.
I am doing alright atm, i am just playing in bits and really getting in to it.
Minsc was the first character i have had die as well. I wish i had a save there now

In vanilla BG 1, and as long as your character is strong enough (and a fighter type or cleric), I think full plate is the best. It can combine with a protection ring, and has bonus to piercing to fend off thieves and arrows. If character weak ankheg armor next best. For a mage, Robe of the Good/Neutral/Evil Archmagi is usually considered the best. And for thief shadow armor from Thunderhammer Smithy. And for a bard chainmail of the dead is good, though once a bard gets high levels you often want him without any so he can cast spells.

I was playing it a fair bit last night. Finished the Nashkel mines, went off and killed Bassilus and got very close to levelling up for the first time.

I am beginning to think i should have maybe played vanilla, as i have come across a few companions added by mods which are overpowered. I'm just not using them atm, but it is tempting to ditch one of the vanilla mages for the ready made level 4 i met;)
I wish i had not ditched Minsc now though:(

This is pretty much where i got to the first time i played it whenit first came out.

A very real problem with the Big World Project is not that the world is so full of new (and overpowered) stuff - it's the amount of mods. 1 mod can, in theory be completely stable. 2 mods, if they affect different things, can in theory, be stable. With 5 mods, you are introducing bugs. At 20 mods, there is a chance that at some point you will have to use the console to advance. And I'm talking about properly written mods.
The Big World Project, full install, hosts hundreds of mods.
If you haven't advanced past this point, then you may run into a bug without knowing. You wouldn't miss the dude that was supposed to challenge you here, or the dialogue line that is vital for the plot to continue.
I'm sorry for scaring you.

Well i did the second of the install options iirc. You have vanilla in the BG2 engine as the "minimal" option and then the next one up is the "recommended" one and that is the one i went for.

I am enjoying the game a lot atm. I started it as i was looking for a laptop game really and it is perfect.

Here is my party atm. What do you think?

I am just about to go to the bandit camp.

Me, Imoen, Ajantis, Kivan, khalid, Jaheira.

Trying to fit Dyanheira in there somewhere.

Can someone please tell me, is it usual that Dynaheir will not have a dialogue where you can tell her to wait somewhere?
My current party is Ajantis, Kivan, Imoen, Dynaheir and Branwen. But i have just met Coran, who i have heard is a useful character and i think that Dynaheir is the weakest link(she dies A LOT) so i tried to swap them but i don't get the dialogue to tell her to wait at an Inn or wherever, If i leave her there will she turn up somewhere else?

Do i even need a mage? i have Imoen dualled as a mage and Branwen as a Cleric so i don't think i really need her anyway.
Also, i can't decide how to play Branwen, mele or ranged, advice? Ajantis is the only mele character i have atm.

As you can probably tell i am really getting in to it now!

Thank you

Dynaheir will only wait somewhere if you have a mod. Normally, she will just wait where you left her. In BG 1 lots of ways to win. A powerful archer like Coran could certainly aid your team. If Branwen is high level (which I assume she is since you are in the Cloakwood to get Coran) she should be casting spells in the tougher fights. Properly equipped, she could certainly melee or ranged. In most cases, however, one tank is enough, she might as well use a sling so the enemies die faster. Also if she's using sling then she can cast mid-battle if needed, but if she's meleeing she could get interrupted so not be as effective in that regard.

Biggest advantage of having two arcane users is can use more wands. But my groups regularly only have 1 arcane and they do just fine, so it's really just preference do you want an archer or 2 mages.

The 'recommended' version of BWP works just fine. Just don't add any mods AFTER installing BWP. Only thing i would avoid is the 'expert' version. You're practically guaranteed to run into bugs there.. .

Is it just for me, or does it get much harder in Cloakwood?
I need to find some way of protecting against poison really.

Antidote potions are readily available and usable by any character, so up-front protection is not normally necessary. If you do want it then there is a green scroll that will protect for a number of hours.

Another way would be anything that improves your saving throws (because only if you fail your saving throw against poison will the poison start working). So normal full plate armor + ring of protection +1 is better than full plate armor +1, because the latter doesn't offer the saving throw bonus.

Think i'll stock up on antidotes then. Ajantis and my main character also have cure disease, as well as Branwen.
I have just got the Ankheg armour which seems quite good as well. I also picked up Faldorn in Cloakwood, but i have dumped her pretty quickly as i think she is quite weak. I do find myself thinking that i have too many archers though. Ajantis usually ends up taking most of the flak.

A few guides say that Dynaheir is a good character to have in your party but tbh i can't really find a place for her. I have Imoen as a mage and Branwen as Cleric so i don't really think i need her. My main character, Kivan, Imoen and Coran as archers and Ajantis as mele.

I'm a bit curious here. Did you go straight from the Friendly Arm Inn to the Nashkell mines to the Cloakwood mines? You do not need to go do this....(of you know this already I'm sorry...)

Also, in the Cloakwood, there will be enemies who are way too strong for you. Have you been to Beregost yet? If not, head there, ask around, talk to anyone, thet might a quest (mission) for you to do.
In BG1, you can't have to many archers and ranged weapon users, this way you can kill almost any enemies before they get to you - or weaken them substantially. As for Dynaheir, you don't need her - if you don't wan't her (and vice versa).

edit:
There a quite a few side missions in Beregost, you could return and do the ones you've missed. Also, have you explored the area to north and south of Beregost - all of it? And do Dynaheir not only come if you also have Minsc? And does Dynaheir not leave if Minsc dies? Dead characters can be revived at a temple - for a prize....else the only thing that'll revive a dead character is a little spell called Reload*
*Not actual an in-game spell, you have to re-load your game....

Yeah i think the way i have gone so far is Friendly Arm-Beregost(killed Bassilus/Bandit camp done)-Nashkel(mines cleared).
I have done a fair few side quests. I went to Nashkel fairly early as i was warned by Khalid and Jaheira to go there and i heard that they possibly leave if you don't? Anyway i went to Nashkel and cleared the mine, then went back to Beregost to do most of the side missions there.

One thing that i regret is that Minsc died and i removed him from the party to make way for someone else, so can't revive him. I did the Gnoll Stronghold after this and rescued Dynaheir.

tbh, i can definitely see myslef playing through this again to try out different things. I suppose you could say i came to this late:D

Taking on Bassilus that early is pretty ballsy. Well done for taking him down.

There is a lot of wandering about to do in BG1, and there are lots of missions to be found that way. At least stuff for your journal you get nice XP for completing. I prefer to clean out all maps before... moving on. There is a lot to do and a lot of weapons and items to be had (which can be sold ofc).

Trying out stuff on your own is the most fun though. Unless you feel like banging your head against a wall. Naturally, if something is too difficult, move on and come back later when you are stronger.

Well i am getting on quite well now. I did a few more side missions and i think the main thing i got out of them was some much better items. Got a few sets of mages robes and rings etc.

I am greatly enjoying it, currently in the mines underneath the Iron Throne camp, Imoen has turned out to be quite a good mage for me too.

I went to Firewine bridge and cleared out the dungeon there, also got Safana and cleared out the cave near the lighthouse. Got a few items for Bards, but i don't have one atm so will probably sell them all.

I have a few more questions though.

1. Are there any items that i could look out for that give you extra slots for spells
2. I am a fighter mage, but atm i am wearing armour as i can't reall find any robes that seem any good, what would be the best thing to do, or best Robes to get? i do have a fair bit of money so could buy some.
3. Is there anything special i should be doing to gain extra spell slots. I am currently a lv4 mage with only 3 lv1 and 2lv2 slots.

Thank you

btw, i am pretty settled on my party now. PC, Ajantis, Kivan, Branwen, Imoen and the one i can't decide on is Safana/Coran(probably Coran)

Two Rings of Wizardry (each doubling your level 1 spells) are in BG1. One is easily acquired if you can find it. It's on the Friendly Arm Inn map, south of the keep, to the right of the road. Since you likely have ToB installed, all you need to to is press Tab to find it I guess.

2. I am a fighter mage, but atm i am wearing armour as i can't reall find any robes that seem any good, what would be the best thing to do, or best Robes to get? i do have a fair bit of money so could buy some.

West of Beregost there is a mage merchant. I think a Base AC and some MRare pretty good for a start, so one of the alignment restricted robes would be my suggestion. In BG2, you might start having other priorities.

3. Is there anything special i should be doing to gain extra spell slots. I am currently a lv4 mage with only 3 lv1 and 2lv2 slots.

Gain levels? Restart as a gnome Fighter/Illusionist?

Thanks, i looked at the robes being sold in the High Hedge area, but couldn't afford them. I can now though so i will probably pick up the good aligned one.I'll look out for a ring of Wizardry as well.

It's pretty expensive though, and isn't that great tbh. That said, money shouldn't be an issue as you get so much loot you can sell for good money. Armour spell plus Knave's robe will serve you quite well too.
