Doesn't Miranda say that Cerberus is """Humanitys""" response to the Spectres, STG etc?

Actually Asari commandos and STG.

@Saphra

Some of those successes were quickly failures due to incompetence or mistakes on their part. The Rachni one wasn't even a success really. Plus any argument I had against their failures were mostly due to experiments and technology. I admitted they were very good at intelligence and building and growing their group. Hell in other arguments I supported them being at times pretty good at politics.

There isn't even an embargo.

The council oppresses no one.

Play by our rules or you can't play at all and you will be left in poverty.

If you play by our rules then we are the boss and you have no vote, no say, hardly even a voice. You'll have to accept us as the dominant party and give our secret agents full access to your secrets and full authority over your own people.

That's not exactly playing fair, Barquiel. You should really think harder about this.

Cerberus has been explored a lot more in the books and games than former actions of the Spectres, so saying one has had more successes than the other is questionable when you don't know the complete list of actions of one of the groups.

Some of the above Cerberus ops look pretty lame compared to stopping Sovereign and Saren, but they are what they are. I would point out that the Shadow Broker one is not a complete success though. With Liara as the new SB, who is a friend of Shepard and apparently now an enemy to Cerberus as of ME3, that is at best a partial success if not an outright failure.

No, they weren't. Hiccups and set-backs do not render a project a failure. It is only a failure if they do not achieve their goal. Most of the time Cerberus achieves their goal, even if the process is bloody. Thus, a success.

So basically the second pope was far more pro human anyway? The first pope wasn't necessarily xenophobic he just didn't care for genocide. This pope was helpful but how helpful is a mystery since Christianity was big before aliens were discovered. It is probably still big now but likely less so.

I never argued that the Cerberus replacement wasn't Pro-human. I argued that his position was more amenable toward the Alliance's diplomacy, which is one way that Cerberus has helped humanity.

Actually we do. In Retribution Illusive Man attempted experiments on Paul Grayson to turn him into a Reaper slave. It was a little too successful though. Also Cerberus operatives attempted to gain info from the Collector Base and they were yet again indoctrinated. Their research haven't been particularly useful in fact it is likely the main reason behind Cerberus little change of heart as of ME3

Retribution is how Cerberus gained the information. That was the purpose of the Grayson experiements before Anderson and Sanders screwed everything up. That book shows nothing of how the information gained by the experiments was used, as most of the book was about putting down the lab-rat.

I said Cerberus were usually successful 50% of the time. Remember Pragia? They failed at making a supersoldier horribly but the research helped them learn about biotics. They usually fail primary goals but are able to get some success from the failure.

That we have seen, also, we have are lacking an opperational history of the Spectres, meaning that we are unable to do any plasable comparison.

Dunno about this one entirely, they are wary of Liara as she is your friend, not theirs. Plus it sounds like you will break off from Cerberus anyway.

Spectres are the Council's CIA, KGB (if they're non-human). They're a hit squad that does the dirty work for the Council. They are highly successful at it. Their work keeps the ruling parties in power. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.

Cerberus is, like I've said before, the black-ops arm of the SA. They never tell us this. One can extrapolate this from Admiral Kahoku being stonewalled. They allow the SA plausible deniability. And it is not above the military to subject their own to various tests without knowledge of others. Think -- they purposely exposed soldiers to radiation from the atomic tests just to see what the effects were. Why are there so many screw ups? They're human. They're brutal. Which leads me to this question. Are they really screw ups, or did they get the expected results?

The Salarians have the STG. The Asari have their Commandos. The Batarians have their whatever they call them.... "terrorist cells."

Vasir is absolutely correct about Shepard, except she forgot to mention that Shepard ends up doing this stuff out of stupidity and sheer luck, not as a result of any careful planning.

Shepard is a naive moron. This is a realization that I painfully came to this morning after looking back and seeing the painfully stupid decisions Shepard made walking into one trap after another in ME1 through ME2. It has given me the insight into how Shepard is going to defeat the Reapers. Sheer stupidity and dumb luck. Shepard simply isn't calculating enough to be fit to be a Spectre. Instead of surgical assaults, things explode in a big way.

I'll bet every single extinction event has had an intelligent, well thought out defensive strategy by the victims. The Reapers simply aren't programmed to deal with stupidity. It will baffle them.

Was this inspired by my last post in the TIM thread? :P

But yeah, one can't claim to have the moral high ground against working with Cerberus(even if only against the Collectors/Reapers) after being part of a space gestapo force that's tasked to keep the ruling racial caste system in power no matter the cost.

The best character interaction on the subject:

"Paragon Shepard: Spectres don't blow up buildings filled with innocent people!

Tela Vasir: Sure we do! We get our hands dirty so the council doesn't have to. The councilors might complain about our methods to soothe their consciences but they never look too closely."

This makes Shepard look like a naive moron ^

Indeed. I scratched my head and thought "Man she's right..." when she said that.

Depends on which goal. The Cerberus scientists were attempting to make a sort of biotic supersoldier. In a way they succeeded but they lose a lot of personnel and resources. As a result they gained data from their mistakes. That is a success but not the best one. With Paul Gray son they know how indoctrination works properly but they also risked a **** load doing it.

Cerberus have failures but they can garner data from it. I won't call it a total success but in some ways it is. That is why I like  50% because in general its true.

She's one of the very few Asari that I like and it's sad that I couldn't have her as a squadmate instead of Liara (ughhh) in ME3.

There weren't any decent traps in Mass Effect. There really aren't any serious ones in ME2 either... disabled Collector Ship being basically the only one that he really falls into.

Cerberus gained information from multiple experiments with husks, dragon teeth and even a dead Reaper. They had plenty of knowledge this was one way to apply it. TIM wanted to harness the tech and find a way to guard from it. The new comic shows he either failed miserable by also getting indoctrinated or he succeeded.

That we have seen, also, we have are lacking an opperational history of the Spectres, meaning that we are unable to do any plasable comparison.

I'd say they are successful enough that they are still in use and their usually have been long periods of peace.

The argument I believe was whether Spectres advance the Council races like Cerberus (thats how I took it). When in fact they don't. They protect council interests but don't necessarily advance it. Their are likely diplomatic missions or retrieval missions (like the beacon) that they may do but in general they protect Council interests especially in peace time.

Your argument on this point is largely semantics. Preservation is the same as advancement if you're allready at the top. Regardless of weather you're an underdog working toward gaining status, or the top dog holding your spot on the hill, you're still acting in the interests of your repsective party. Yes, there are some differences in tactical options, but the underlying premise and moral standing is the same.

They succeeded, as you just admitted, therefore it is a success. It may not be viable, but the over all goal was reached. Proof of concept.

You like 50% because you just like to make-up numbers to support your reasoning. You're full of ****.

One of the Bioware Pulse episodes that has Aria's face down in the squaddie face icon area (i.e. superimposed over Shepard's butt)

Of course, Chris Priestly came out and tried to deny it as a "work in progress" but he's not fooling anyone

I suppose that part is open to interpretation, but I consider it the differense between Lawful-good and Lawful-stupid. Someone can have the best intentions and still do more harm than good to their position.

I'm specifically talking about Cerberus mantra. They advance specifically in military, politics and science (At least that Miranda claims) while it maybe true the don't necessarily steal tech they seem to try and make it on their own. Spectres don't take that approach usually. They are either sent to kill, spy or at times retrieve Prothean devices. I would say Spectres or at lest some act to advance Council interests but it is not in the way that Cerberus does at all which makes them different in that area.

I never said it was much of a difference.
