They are all kind of fun and they all kind of annoy me too. I think the ideas behind each character are nice, but the execution of them can be sloppy are just down right rediculous at times. I guess Varric is a nice character, but my main gripes with him are that he's more interesting than Hawke and his crossbow is just dumb. Then again so few of the combat animations make any sense in DA 2 that you might as well have a dwarf with an automatic assault rifle which fires bolts.

Favorites would be Varric, Aveline, and Bethany. Those three seem to be the only party members with with common sense and a rational disposition. The ones I don't like are mainly Merril because she idioticaly turns to blood magic just for the stupid mirror even though her own clan is against and only when it is too late does she realize how foolish and stubborn she had been. I also think she is way too childish for my tastes. Now I do like Isabela;'s character she can be very entertaining and funny and overall I do find her very likable but her selfishness set into motion the events that lead to the Qunari siege of Kirkwall that lead to the Viscount's death that lead to Meredith taking over the city. And last I don't like Fenris. I mean yes I get it pretty much every mage he ever encountered was a douchebag but he is to bigoted and narrowminded for my tastes. Not even a a helpful mage hawke can change his mind or get him at the very least to soften his stance.

Considering everything and the shortness of awakening  I didnt care for her too much, plus i didnt want 2 dwarfs in my party. Plus Nathaniel was actually pretty likable, (which surprised me) so i also didnt want another rogue.

Of the DA2 companions, Merrill is my favourite. I love pretty much everyone, though. (Including Sebastian, who seems to be unpopular.)

Least favourite ... well, I don't exactly dislike Anders, but I did want to punch him a lot of the time.

Merrill is tops, because she's adorably clueless and funny, followed by Varric, 'cause, ya know, he's Varric.
But I honestly like most of them. I just try to put myself in their shoes to see how they think.
'Cept for Carver. I get it, you don't like me. STFU.
Oh, and he hits on Merrill. Big no-no.

This. As you said, most of the characters have decent concepts behind them, but it is the execution that lets them down. It kind of feels like the design team wrote out a couple of bullet points for each character as an outline and the went, "That'll do." As a result, most of the supporting characters come across as fairly one dimensional stereotypes, rather than fully fledged characters. None of them have anywhere near the depth of (some of) the characters of Origins, who were complex, multilayered, individuals with their own quirks, personalities and agendas.

Varric and/or Isabela are favorites for me. They just feel more like fleshed out interesting characters.

My least favorite would probably be Sebastian. His backstory for me just didn't seem that interesting.

Favourite - Probably Sebastian or Carver.

Least Favourite  - Isabela..I really hated Isabela.. She's apparently got alot of depth if you rival her but the type of Hawke I was playing caused me to gain alot of friendship with her.. I dont like Friendship Isabela.. Besides her saying slightly varying versions of the same thing every time she speaks Her casual attitude was constantly breaking the immersion for me so in future runs I dont plan on recruiting her.

Tbh though I didn't really like any of the companions in DA2 aside from Sebastian and Carver (Havn't done a non-mage run yet so cant comment on Bethany) But yeah when I think about it I really didn't like Aveline, Fenris or Anders either. Merrill was annoying at times with her stupidity but overwise she was more tolerable than the rest.
Varric was good when not talking to Isabela or Sarcastic Hawke... Didn't like Sarcastic Hawke - Yeah I said it =P

In Origins I liked all the companions though.. Zevran being my favourite followed by Secret Companion tied with Alistair and Sten.. Cant decide which I like more between the three.

Favorite: That would be Varric, by far, as a matter of fact, he's one of my Favorite Video Game characters.
Followind would be Isabela, not very close, but still, friggin love her.

Least Favorite: Fenris or Anders, either one is a bag in the ass, and i'm glad i can kill them.

Aveline. I don't know what it is about the Dragon Age series, but they're very good about making the first full-time party member you receive incredibly interesting...unlike some other Bioware games (cough MASS EFFECT KAIDAN JACOB cough).

Though to be honest, Aveline is NOTHING without her interactions with Isabela. Their quabbling in Aveline's Act 2 quest stands out as some of the best inter-party back & forth that I can remember in a long time. In fact, can I change my vote to Aveline/Isabela?

Favourite - Varric by far.
He is the only character who is both mature, and not obsessed by something. He has his problems, but he doesn't allow them to overwhelm him like other characters do (Anders, Fenris, Merrill, Carver...).

Cute - Bethany. She has a minor role in the plot like Carver, but she is more mature than her brother and is not obsessed with that "who is the best brother" thing.

Tolerable - Aveline even if she is too harsh with others and manages to have arguments with everyone in the party at least once.

Almost Tolerable - Merrill but just because of her awesome party banters with Varric and Isabela. She is sweet and I like that, she is naive and I can live with that (it makes her funny, so sometimes it's even a good thing)... but when it comes to the eluvian topic... I can't stand her. She is a whiner and doesn't take any advice.

Insufferable - Pretty much everyone else, but most of all Fenris and Anders. They don't listen, they are inconsolable whiners and they can't talk of anything else than their problems.

Favorites:

Isabella - I always bring her with me... Even knowing that she will most likely die, but her dialogues are the funniest, so +1 fav for me.

Varric - He's awesome... Enough said...

Bethany - Maybe it's because I have two brothers... But I really like her, and I liked the idea of my character having a family, really adds some immersion in the roleplaying department.

Neutral:

Aveline - I don't think she's a very interesting character... The only moment I like her is when she is talking with Varric or Isabella.

Carver - I don't usually play with mages in DA2... So, next...

Sebastian - I didn't like him ever since I found out that he was a DLC character (I really don't like the idea of "purchasing companions"... it sounds... bad... Somehow it reminds of Human Traffic, don't ask...)

Dislike:

Fenris - In my opinion Fenris is the most forced character Bioware ever made, I don't like him... And I can't stand his whining.. Really, How about growing up, hun?

Anders - I was so in love with Anders in Awakening, and when I discover he was going to be in DA2 I almost cried... And then... I think everyone knows what comes next...

Merril - I think the excess of "cuteness" really wasn't good for her... It made her in a awkward kitty playing with a ball of yarn... It's boring

Am I missing someone? Probably... Naaah.. They would fit in the "Dislike" section anyway...

Faves for Rogue/ Fighter builds: Avaline and Issy or Issy and Verric. Bethany the Warden Mage is awesome too.
Faves for mage: Fenris and Varric. Carver is fun too.

Dislike: Sebastian for pro-mage Hawkes. Found him to be a bummer.

Everyone else I like to take along depending on the mission.

I think my favorites shift from playthrough to playthrough. Sometimes characters I loved before really get on my nerves. Please note that I do a ton of "filling in" in my head. But anyway,

Favorites: Aveline, which surprised me as I didn't think I'd care for her but I liked that she and my Hawke were such close friends after going through all they did together. I also like Fenris and Anders, though I will admit having moments where I just couldn't stand them anymore. Varric is okay, I haven't used him much (one of the reasons I hate "set" weapon styles... I understand the point, but I'd love more of a chance to change up my party without have to figure out a whole new playstyle. Or a whole new Hawke.).

I like Merrill in a select few "cute" moments (Aveline's quest and the fake fire bit), and her VA was awesome, but as my first Warden was a dalish... I kind of hate her for being SO STUPID about the mirror. I've only managed to force myself to help her out one time to try a friendship, but I just can't justify it.

Sebastian annoys me mostly because I feel like he's always talking to people as if they're children. He seems really arrogant and condescending. I thought I would LOVE Isabela, but she's my least favorite by far. I can't figure out what it is that I hate so much, but I just don't like her at all.

You know I really didn't like isabela until.. I got her match up with Aveline or Varric then everything changed, this 2 together are Hilarious. Oh after Aveline is back from orlais get isabela, varric and Aveline together you won't stop laughing. Even as a rogue I take Isabela with me, love when she put Anders on his place lol! Anders is very good romance option but yeah he get boring, soon enough. Only have 1 mage with anders as Li, rest is Fenris and Isabela.. Still need to make 1 chart and have Merril as romance.

Varric was my favorite, all around upstanding good guy and funny.

I have to give Isabella a close second, just because she had some many wonderful random chatter with all the other companions.

My least favorite was Anders. A whiny depressing character that ruined the cool, fun loving, womanizing kitty cat loving mage for no good reason, other than to continue to beat us over the head with the mage vs templar thing, as if we didn't know what going on, since every facet of the game was shoving it at us over and over in neon lights.

Isabella/bethany is my favorite. Isabella is fun and exciting and bethany is kind and good hearted. She shows that mages are not evil.
Anders/merril is my least. Anders whines about being oppressed all the time and wants everyone to feel sorry for him even when bethany's fate is far worse she is still happy and kind and doesn't whine about it. Merril is nice but I just don't like her. I don't know why.

Aveline and Isabela are my favorites. They seem the most fleshed out, of all the companions. The bantering between them is alot of fun too.

Least favorite - Merril and Fenris. Because they are a pair of damn anime teens that belong in a jrpg.

My favorites are Fenris and Anders because so far they're the only ones my Hawke's have romanced

Least favorite ... don't have one; since I genuinely love them all.

Favorites:

-Varric. He's a lot of fun.
-Carver. This sounds weird I know, but I enjoyed pitting him against an aggressive Hawke.

Least Favorites:

-Merrill. I just find her incredibly annoying.
-Bethany. Nice, but boring.

I also liked the rivalmance with Anders. He could be annoying at other ties, but this helped compensate for that.
