My favourite is Merrill
,'cause she's sooo cute, and sooo misguided (but in a good way, not like, say, people who enjoy going to McDonald's). She's very naïve as well. For example, she explains to Hawke that "Pol was city-born, worldly" when really, if he was worldly, he'd have been able to live with humans longer than he did (i.e. he wouldn't have gotten in trouble and be forced to run away to the Dalish).
I wouldn't say worst companion, but definitely my least favourite is either Anders or Sebastian. Aveline has the best personal quest (Act 2) in the whole of DA, so she would score higher than them if I were to rank each companion. Anders really lost his touch (or BioWare did), for the most part. He was almost not humourous at all, always serious. And Sebastian is just too holy for my tastes. "Elthina this", and "Andraste that".
EDIT: Oh I forgot about Carver. I only much like him when he's hating on (or showing a mild contempt for) Hawke. Otherwise I don't think much of him. Maybe him? Afterall, I don't use or get to bring him along, often. He's probably my least favourite.

My favorite was Merrill. Why? Do you really need to ask? She's adorable! Yet tragically misguided.
For least, I'd say Anders. I actually like him but towards the end when he was really kind of losing it to Vengeance the writers did a good job of feeding my dislike.

My least favourite: Tie between the-good-for-nothing Carver and poorly-written Anders. Both are extremely awkward and dull.
My favourite: The charismatic and always welcomed 'Exit game' button.
Ok, seriously, my favourite character is Varric. Followed by Aveline and Isabela.

I do like most of them, if I had to pick one, it's Varric, closely followed by Merrill. Aveline and Isabela (together) are great, as well.
Sebastian isn't my kind of character, Carver get's almost no play time as well, but the only one I dislike is Anders. His changed voice didn't help him to gain any points. However, I'm quite sure Anders was meant to polarise, so the writer did a decent job.

Interesting thing is that I didn't find Varric in the least awesome. He was dull without any comparison. Others were more quirky, which I like, but Anders started to annoy me pretty quickly.
They are not the most likeable game characters, but there was pretty good writing involved with some. I actually did like Fenris' story-line and most dialogue.
Probably the fave would be Merrill. My least favorite characters were Hawke's siblings.

Favourite: Varric. He has great comments, he never "nags" and has good abilities in battle. I also like Aveline, she has a great personalitity and she is very realistic. Her abilities are kinda boring though.
Least favourite: Sebastian. As a companion, he is boring, annoying and his abilities are like a "poor man`s Varric"
HOWEVER, i do think he has great potential as a future antagonist.

Favorite: None. I don't support the idea behind limiting your interaction with the companions because companions or party interaction is the only reason why I bought BioWare Fantasy RPG. By restricting my interaction with the companions ala ME 2 style, I don't find anything that could possibly hook me with the game. The story is awful and past BioWare's games stories also too mediocre, cliché, predictable and uninspired for my taste ( with the exception of DAO Ultimate Sacrifice plot )..No comment on combat element since I play almost every genre thrown at me ( with the exception of JRPG ). But I do like more complex looting, crafting and inventory system ala Diablo style.
Less Favorite: All of the them but Aveline and Varric is quite oK mainly because Aveline did show some character development ( after her husband, Wesley, died ) while Varric is funny and can be reliable as diplomat.
Merril, Anders and Fenris has no personality other than blabbering their personal belief for 7 damn years. I wish I could just tell them to shut up and said "I know I've heard it so many time . Now let me talk and you listen instead".
They talk so little for years and yet too focus on their personal quest/belief making them more like manipulative character than anything else. Furthermore, the time spend with them is too short to know them better as a person. As the result they are nothing more than quest giver like any other NPC. .None of this companions has the details of Morrigan and Leliana or even Shale. My DAO mabari dog in DAO is better companion than this 3 static shallow non develop characters. At least I know my DAO mabari is a dog who can't talk and would never used me as a tool to do anything..

Play the game, everybody will have their own opinions. Some will hate all of them because they had that one line in that one place behind that wall around that corner in that street at that city in that country (see where I'm getting at? Basically very silly things.) Other's have valid albiet *sensible* opinions.
I think an awesome quote is in order:
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Well While I respect Sacred_Fantasy's opinion i cant agree with him but then again he takes his RP very seriously sometimes so much it worrys me he'd get a hernia from all that stress and seriousness.
OT- my favourites are Varric he says some hilarious things but you do have to be British to understand some of the jokes Isabella what can I say about her that ass that cleavage mesmerising and her saucy mind yum yum( Sorry just cant resist a woman talking dirty) and also Merril to she's cuuuute.
Dislike- Carver- sometimes he's ok but the constant whining about being in Hawke's shadow gets a tad tiring by act 2.
Sebastian-While his hearts in the right place his constant preaching about the maker reminds me of the Jehovah's witnesses and the Born Again Christians that come to our town pestering us to convert to their faith.
Anders- while I have no love for the Chantry and its religious zeal and their treatment of mages anders is too much of an extremist even though i can understand why he's so angry at them he's too blinded by his anger to see that extremism wont help

LOL! Thank you for your concern. I guess I should relieve my stress by playing Skyrim now ( damn I wish Bethesda could release creation kit earlier. I'm itchy to alter some of the stories and have fun with my new mod ) Just drop by to see if there's any news regarding DA 3 but alas... BioWare still keep their low profile after 9 months.jbrand2002uk wrote...

Anyway, P2P MMO is a bad thing but I doubt BioWare will use that model for DA franchise. If they are dead serious with the multiplayer thing, I speculate it would be F2P model instead. We'll have to wait and see further news.

Favorites are Isabella and Varric. I like snarky thieves, I guess.
Worst is by far Anders. Even before the ending, he just irritated me everytime he opened his mouth.

Favorite: Varric and Aveline
Least: Anders and Merril*
* I don't hate Merril, just her story/role in the game.
Aveline is essentialy Samara 2.0: the best female in the squad is un-romancable. Thank you for that Bioware. Varric is a bro.
Anders. My God I hate Anders. He's an extremist who refuses to even accept any opinions that doesn't agree with his own. Even Fenris (who is staunchly anti-mage) will admit when he is wrong, or grow to broaden his views.
Merril. I just hated her character arc. She's a nice character who suffers from an Idiot Plot. It makes for a good Rivalmance though if you really love her character though.

Favourite: Carver. Although he was fighting with me all the time, somehow it created very different and very real dynamic. It was like our relationship has at least some depth and personal level.
Least favourite: Fenris. I hate mages, they are evil blah blah blah all the time. To my mage Hawke.
Tallis: "We push Felicia Day down your throat. Like it or not, you will support the Qun" character.

So you haven't played the game and you're asking who is the best and worst?
People have different opinions so it's quite silly and also you're spoiling them moment of gettingto know these characters, one of the best things is meeting these people and you have a first impression and then you get to understand them.

Least Favorite...
Sebastian. And Dog. (I'm a cat person, can't we get a cat next game? I guess we had Ser Pounce-a-lot in Awakening...) And the Hawke twins. Honestly, I liked the idea of them, but I can't bring myself to be remotely interested in their boring shenanigans.
OP, play the game though. Obviously, everyone here is giving conflicted answers.
