Yes, some of the movies Hollywood makes today are complete trash. But this is not a new trend. Acting like things were SO much better decades ago is just flat out wrong.

Good thing I never did that then. Allow me to direct your attention here, in case you were laboring under the pretense that I can't distinguish between perspective and nostalgia.

I would click, but...I just don't give enough of a ****. I've kind of reached my ****-giving limit for the day. Maybe tomorrow.

Ah. Still feeling slighted by my post earlier? Do as you will.

I don't mean to pick on you, but that sounds like bitter hipsterism (I can't think of a better word for only liking anything that's not current or not mainstream at least).

I see, well that sounds like a personal shortcoming you should work to improve.

Well this is somewhat reassuring, although still concerning. A "new story" is a far better route to take all things considered and may turn out decent.

My only concern is will this be a pseudo version of ME1 now? In essence a very different version of ME1? I hate to say it but those of you who want movies based on the game series this is what you're going to get if it happens. They were never going to make a faithful adaption of the games. You know why? Cause you can't squeeze a 20+ hour cinematic gameplay experience into 2 hours. If the movie is based on ME1 they were going to have to do things very differently. So no you were never going to see a proper ME1 movie and pining for such is just being plain naive. If they do make a movie based following the events of ME1 it will just be a another corny throw-away action video game movie.

Of course if this movie follows a different story (something not a direct part of the games) then I think there is some hope for this movie. They need a story that will work in a movie format and that's exactly why it shouldn't be based directly on the games. The reason most video game based movies fail is that video games are already a form of visual media. Books and comics work because they are read and imagined. What takes pages to descibe in a book or comic can be shown in 10 seconds with a movie. But video games do not leave things to the imagination so you cannot simply condense it into a two hour experience and expect it to maintain the same appeal.

Obviously if the movie is based on Shepard it's going to be using the default Sheploo. It's not going to be any other Shepard and the Shepard shown isn't going to be anything like the games to boot. (Something people would do well to remember despite whatever actor they think may fit the role "perfectly". This is why I'd really much rather see another character used, but whatever.)

I'm a bit baffled not using Seth Green as Joker himself. Really? I mean to me Joker is pretty much a video game version of Seth Green. Why couldn't Seth Green play a crippled pilot? I think this has more to do with Seth Green be a fairly well-known actor and casting him could potentially take the light away from whatever random guy they choose to play Shepard. Still I don't think it would hurt as if nothing else knowing Seth Green is in the movie is bound to tempt more then a few people to go see it. Personally not using Seth Green seems rather dumb to me. And this is why I'm not really holding my breath for this movie at this point anymore.

I'm sure many here envisioned what the perfect cast for the Mass Effect movie would be. I think almost all of us would have picked Seth Green to play Joker as much as we would probably pick Keith David to play Anderson if for no other reason for simply having the right voice. But yeah this just goes to show whatever cast you think might be good for the movie probably isn't going to happen. (Which again is why it's a terrible idea to make a movie based even loosely on the games themselves. With new characters there is no issue with finding "matching" actors.)

Q: How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?

A: A movie narrative is different than gameplay. There won't be a choice aspect to this film, just a normal film narrative.

I think the answer missed the point here.

Definitely, and it should be taken as an indicator just how familiar these film people are with the material. This film is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Even Uwe Boll will think it sucks.

Maybe I'm not looking deep enough into this subject, but what would be a proper addressing to the choice element then? Films are still films, passive entertainment.

You can address the choice issue in this 'passive entertainment' by NOT casting the main as Shepard, like the ME novels, which references the plot of the game without canonizing any choices made by the player.

Having a canon Shepard alienates the fans and new audience to the ME universe probably don't care as long as the story is good. Which brings up the question, why are we only exploring Shepard's story when the ME universe is so rich and big?

.......no seth green as joker and no reapers? I've already lost interest in this movie. Only the inclusion of Brandon Keener as Garrus would make me interested again.

Seth green actually looks like Joker, IMO. Just watched a video of him with a beard. He's a great actor too, it would be hilarious to watch him in the movie. It's just a shame that the producers don't realize that.

If only they could create a Mass Effect TV show. I think that would be better than a movie

Don't tell me he wouldn't be the perfect actor for joker; he talks and looks exactly like joker.

What a surprise... Hollywood once again ruins, retools and reboots another IP, and one that isn't even old and gathering dust this time. The whole movie just sounds like it's made of suck and fail even more than I thought it would be.

Honestly, I've been thinking (don't worry, I didn't hurt myself), and the best course of action here might be to ignore the ME movie and all news concerning it, and hope it goes away.

If there is no interest in the movie, just apathy, they will probably reconsider even making it until they can make a decent one.

I wonder if it would really be better if they stuck with the Game's plot.

I know it worked really well to go with a different plot in the Bourne Trilogy of movies, relative to the books. They kept the spirit of the books well enough.

Won't be good if they get... too far away from the spirit of the games.

They can a toilet based on Batman and it would still be awesome. Batman's awesomeness is all-encompassing and cannot be stifled, even with a dump sitting in the middle of it.

I beg to differ: Batman and Robin.
