Oh, and they will probably release a ****ty video game with it to
Conclusion: Mass Effect's first impressions on the non- gamer masses will be of a horrible wanna- be Star Wars and will kill any chance for the actual video game series to get the acclaim they deserve
Great idea BioWare/EA/Avi Arad or whoever made this decision

Oh, nice to see you actually thought of the 100% legit result of a Mass Effect movie adaptaion while Bioware, EA and Avi Arad didn't, they should have totally came to you for advice.<_<
By new story they mean something that doesn't run for 20 hours. It's still based on the first game.
There was no videogame with the PoP movie.
Mass Effect's first impression on the non-gamer masses won't and SHOULDN'T be of a videogame. That's why the demographic are NON-gamers, that's why it is made into a MOVIE. It's not meant to promote or historically elevate the videogames. If the latter were so astonishing, they wouldn't need a movie for that.

There is plenty of source material to use that justifices lack of certain game characters like Joker. Not that I would enjoy missing such characters, but they are not siamese twins you know...

I can already see it going two ways. Worst case scenario: Aston Kutcher is Shepard, a young marine just graduated from the N7 academy, where he had to survive the brutal training regiment in addition to the taunting of his fellow students, which includes a tall 2m Russian, because he came from the slums of Earth. His only friends include wisecracking pilot Joker, played by Tyler Perry and fellow marine Ashley Williams, played by Hollywood girl of the moment who once lets her hair down magically becomes incredibly hot, who bears the stigma of her ancestry. Together they have to hunt down Rogue Spectre Saren Artenius while discovering that the power of friendship and love can overcome any obstacles.
Best case scenario: Anything else.
As Charlie would say: "Winning!" Put me down for a ticket right now!
Speaking of Charlie, he could play the Illusive Man, he would be waaaayy better than his legitimate-actor father. Saren could be played by Samuel L. Jackson. And Samesh Bhatia would obviously be played by Ben Kingsley.
Ben Kingsley, what happened to you? You were Gandhi, man. Gandhi! And then 25 years later you are in Prince of Persia. I will never understand. It's not like you can't get legitimate work; Shutter Island is a great movie! But Prince of Persia? The Love Guru? Fable 3? Have you no dignity?

I think the choice to make a story that has not been told in the current video games is a good one. Why on earth or any other planet would we want to see a movie of a game that we already played? Specially such a cinematic game like Mass Effect.

For the same reason people who read Lord of the Rings went to see the movie. For hte same reason that people who read Harry Potter went to see the movies.
Why on earth are yo uasking such a stupid question?
ME already beign cinematic is hte PERFECT reaon to make it into a move - ti's already close. It's story is compact and self-inclosed, it's got enough action and drama and everything. It's a perfect movie story.
To go with another story completely is sheer stupidity.

He looks more the part than most people, even though Joker's face isn't actually modelled after Seth Green's face (or is it? It looks like it is but I heard that wasn't so.)
I suppose its not such a big deal though. Either way I'm not getting my hopes up about this movie (even though it has potential.)

The Dragonball movie shows how you can completely **** up a well defined and well loved thing.
Should have never been made in the first place.

Q: How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?
A: A movie narrative is different than gameplay. There won't be a choice aspect to this film, just a normal film narrative.
I think the answer missed the point here. Players wants to know if the narrative would relate to the choices made by players in the game. Say...if your Wax and Kaiden is dead in your Shepard's playthrough, will they be walking around in the movie(assuming the story takes place after ME1)?
I wouldn't mind a new story as long as it does not canonize the decisions I made in my Shepard's world. Much like the novels/comics Bioware has offered so far, but by establishing Shepard as male already canonize part of the player's choices, lets hope it doesn't go too far and alienates the fans even more. :I

They answered perfectly, if you ask me. Another opinion of mine:
The movie can canonize all it wants, my games' canon is with my created characters, and nothing can change that. Weird?

It would have been great to see Seth Green as Joker though (if Joker is in the movie).

What is the common sense and conigitive logic you speak of sir - BSN knows nothing of it.
BTW - I agree
Side note: I could go in a long drawn lenegth OP ED about how Games never translate into movies well because of the differences in mediums and how they are experienced.
I would rather see the Mass Effect Movie stand on its own - Maybe another retelling of events or its own story. I don't need a blow by blow movie verison the game for than that i would just play well the game.

Definitely, and it should be taken as an indicator just how familiar these film people are with the material. This film is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Even Uwe Boll will think it sucks.Tokion wrote...

Maybe I'm not looking deep enough into this subject, but what would be a proper addressing to the choice element then? Films are still films, passive entertainment.marshalleck wrote...

well having the plot not be based on the games kinda makes sense. Most video game to movie adaptions try to reproduce the game on the big screen and end up screwing it all up. Makes sense to create a new story not seen in the games.
I know right - Just keep the over arching Theme of the Mass Effect series and come up with a plot for a movie and not a game. Oh and for the love god and all that is holy Bioware better have some kind of Quality control person in place.

They end up totally changing everything around to make it appealing to the medium and a new audience, rendering it completely unrecognizable to the fans of the game while utterly bland and uninteresting to the people they were going after.
