So, we know that apprentice Dalish hunters have to go into the forrest and bring back the pelt of an animal they killed (at least in the clan we help in DA2) before they become adults and get their vallaslin. Such rituals are common in real world tribal societies.
Presumably Keeper apprentices go through something similar ... only it probably doesn't involve hunting. Is there any in-game information about what this ritual might be? Presumably Merrill has completed it, since she has her tattoos by the time of DAO.

It depends Merril was given to the clan when she was a child, means the only mage in that clan is/was Marathari ( sp) So no merril didn't have to compete for the right to be keepers first.
Now in DAO Zathrian clan had few mages and the "first" the warden's meet had to compete for the right to be Zathrian first, probably knowlege of the lore and few magicals spells.

Maybe Dalish mages go into the Fade and bring back the pelt of a demon they killed.

Even though she didn't have to compete for the position, Merrill probably had to do something to prove she was adult enough to get her tattoos.

Maybe so!

Being a Keeper maybe it was something like what apprentice druids did to prove they were worthy and memorise a ton of **** off by heart and then recite it.

Maybe they go through a Dalish version of a Harrowing?

Like I said she has to know about the Lore of her people, thats why she tells Hawke she didn't have any friends ( only the warden) because she has to study.
