I personally prefer Major Shepard.  In regards to going into the field, he is the one with all the experience with the different species and Reapers, yes he should be on the ground leading the fight.  Besides, it isn't that uncommon for the leader to be the first on the ground and the last to leave the battlefield.

That makes him a highly valuable asset. The logical move would be to let him go through the battlefield after the battle itself is over and the threat is gone.

Then again, they are letting their admirals strut around on places like Omega, so what do I know?

Was watching a video on youtube dealing with Shep's escape from earth
and after he jumps on the Normandy and Anderson elects to stay behind,
you can very visiably see 2 bars on his collar denoting a Captain or
Major (probably Major since Shep is a Marine).  Now this could be for
several reasons..............

14:04 of this video by D3MON-SOVER3IGN (nice vid btw)

1) The armor was just laying around and he needed it in a pinch, it just happened to belong to a Major.
2) He was posthumously awarded the rank of Major (we just didn't know it at the time)
3) Anderson field commisioned him to Major so he would be senior officer on board th eNormandy (if Kaidan survives     Virmire)
4) He was given rank by Alliance Command after the Reapers attacked (and cleared of all charges)

My apologies if this has been stated before, I didn't see anythign related to this, just my two cents.

Updated for link

Wouldn't he be promoted to Staff Commander?

2 bars, that is a Captain or a Major.

But Shepard was a Lieutenant Commander. If he got promoted he'd be a Staff Commander. Not a Captain/Major.

That and in Mass Effect 1; Rear Admiral Kahoku only had ONE bar on his shoulder.

I'm confused, though. Shep's on trial by the Alliance for killing 300,000 Batarians... Yet gets promoted in between being arrested and going on trial?

Yes, I am aware of the bars on Rear Admiral Kahoku's uniform, I believe it to be a mistake.  In the vid Admiral Anderson is wearing 4 bars (in me1, he is wearing 3).   However what matters is ME3, Anderson si wearing 4 bars, Shep 2,  if what I know about military rank and insignia is true (and it is, I was military) then Shepis 2 ranks under Anderson, hence a Major or Captain.

Promoted to Captain? I always thought it was...

Private > Corporal > Sergeant > Lieutenant > Major > Colonel > Commander (not including infinite variations)

Brush me up on Marine facts, please.

Maybe it varies based on the trial. After all, they're saying your decisions in the trial play a crucial role in various elements throughout the rest of the game.

Maybe there's also an option so renegade they want to throw you in the slammer forever but the Reapers stop that from happening.

True, we don't knwo how it plays out.  All I knwo is that I saw 2 bars on his collar which denotes Captain or Major.  How or why he gains that rank is not currently known.  Nore do we kno wif he was promoted posthumously to O5 then promoted agaon to Captain/Major. It's all up in th eair.

Because I am not sure these are even rank insignia.

Besides, I highly doubt Shepard got promoted with the trial and all. Also, Commander Shepard has been established so well in the trilogy, I doubt BW will give it up in the last game.
I think it is either a mistake or they are not insignia after all.

Alliance HQ: So Shepard we're promoting you to Staff Commander for killing 200,000 Batarians. Damned xenos. Good work!

Shepard: Actually it was 300,000.

Alliance HQ: ...you just earned yourself the Captain's seat.

If he earned the pay grad eof O5 posthumously, it would have been after he died, a full 2 years before the vents of The Arrival.  I woudl think he would get th enext promotion after thew trial or when the reapers attack.  My theory i she gets Major/Captain as a field commission.

It matters for the sole purpose of commanding the Alliance ship, Normandy.

Shepard is Alliance Navy. Most modern Navies have differ rank designations than the rest of the armed forces (army, Marines, Air force)
Shepard is a lieutenant commander which is the same rank as a captain in the army. If he was to get promoted he would be a Commander, equivalent to a Major in the army

I disagree, it's way to similar to the insignia on Anderson's cover (hat) to be some kind of mistake.  And it is in the correct place chevrons woudl go on a military uniform.

I would say option 1.

As far as we know the game starts with Shep on trial and i doubt he/she will be in armor in the courtroom and the reapers invasion is supposed to crash the trial so it seems logical that Shep and perhaps even Anderson would just pick any armor available.

I know what posthumously means.

I was taking the conversation in another direction.

But I doubt they would bother to change cloths in the middle of an attack.  Not saying your wrong, but if on eof my Marines had ever told me.  "Hold on, I need to change my shirt!"  If we ever got ambushed, I'd tell them to stfu and grab their weapon.

Isn't Shep a marine? I am pretty sure he is marine.Besides, insignia can change in 170 years so I wouldn't go by today's standards. Well, if it's not a mistake and if those are insignia, I'd also go with option 1.
