I have just returned to  the game after a long break and decided to play mage as my main charcter ( played as rogue before), patch happened in the meantime and I was browsing thsi forum for a good build and stuff to avoid but most of the build posted  include blod magic tree which for roleplaying reasons I want to stay completely out of it.

The closeset guide I could find for non blood mage was teh one for soloing this game so was wondering if I should still pick up same spells considering I plan to run with full party (probably Fenris, Varic and Anders)
I  like my cold spells but my main issue is haste seems to be the way to go along with gravity pull and other points in force tree - would I be able to regen enough mana without going down spirit tree? should I still pick up rock armor ( i dont go above hard mode) early on or should I wait fro later levels. And how shoudl i distribute my points leveling? just dump it all to increase spellpower or make sure my mana pool is increasing steadily as well, should I bother with con/str at all?

Im really not very good using tactics for ocmpanions ( better look for that guide in sme1s profile again) f but I have no problme with micromanagement ( I mean I had fun with my rogue but had to increase difficulty as otherwise npc mage kileld everything before  had a chance to touch them :)

any advise will be appreocated

I will try and offer some advice though i havnt played since the patch. You should be fine with the force and spirit healer trees. Primal tree is still good rock armor included, Depending on your party setup will decide on which other trees to get spells from.
Magic is still your main stat and i believe they reduced the willpower reqs for mages for armor reqs, but still invest some willpower maybe a 2:1 ratio other stats arn't needed, as you are not going blood mage con dosnt need a heavy investment.

The guides for soloing on nightmare are fine for anything under that dificulty setting, as for the tactics there are some really good guides around explaining how to set them up etc or if you prefer to just micromanage them.

Yeah what PlayingWithKnives said. I played a mage with force tree maxed, had some spirit healing and some stun abilities and it was a total blast! Actually, Force plus a smattering of different other powers is really fun and you don't need Blood Magic at all. The system is pretty forgiving on which powers you take. You don't even need Force Mage but it's really fun bouncing enemies around. :D

If you don't play on nightmare, elemental is good as well since you don't have to worry about friendly fire and the upgraded ice spells in elemenalt is really good at freezing enemies.

My last mage worked pretty well on hard: I never had mana problems, 30-35 Willpower at the end of the game is more than enough, so you can put most points in Magic. Some points in Constitution are good, i had 20. Helps you survive the occasional assassin. I used neither Rock Armor nor Arcane Shield, but i guess if you use them, you can drop a little CON for WIL. My distribution was 2 Magic every level, 1 Constitution or Willpower (Con on every thrid level, Wil on every other, until it was enough and i could concentrate on magic)
On hard you don't have to worry about friendly fire, so elemental spells are the way to go. Combine this with Force mage: "Pull of the Abyss" on the greatest group of enemies to get them close together, then "Gravitic Ring" to keep them that way. That is the moment to start the bombing: Firestorm (main attack for me), Fireball, Fist of the maker (If the enemies are bipedal), chain lightning. With enough points in magic, a staff with good base damage and equipment that gives a bonus to elemental damage, the first wave of enemies is dead in seconds. Little groups that are outside of your bombing zone are work for your warrior, dangerous targets that won't die quickly enough are targets for your rogue. You also should pick up Crushing Prison for fighting strong single targets (but gravitic ring and firestorm work well too).

This is how I would build my Hawke

At level 27

Hawke (+3 tomes)

Anders

Varric (+1 tome)

Sebastian

The plan would be to pull a group of enemies together with Pull of the Abyss and AoE them to death (firestorms) or plant a walking bomb and concentrate fire on that target to bring the bomb to trigger.

For single target DPS you would use Pinning Shot and use a CCC (e.g. spirit bolt).

Anders should maintain perma Haste (use Martyr to reduce the cooldown)

AND IMPORTANTLY play on Nightmare! Our suffer the Haste bug (in any difficulty other then Nightmare the duration of Haste will be reduced by your Magic resistence). And don't fear Nightmare, it's quite easy with an all range build. :)

Put your stat points into DEX for Varric and Sebastian (make Varric your lock-picker and trap-disarmer, so give him a total of 44 CUN). For Hawke and Anders all into MAG, (if you reach 99 MAG go DEX) it might not hurt however to give Anders some CON, putit on 20 or 25 if you like.
Hawke won't need any WIL & CON, use Death Syphon. Anders will regain Mana through Martyr.

If you have any questions ask away.

After having done 3 serious playthroughs i now just play for fun so i usually use a trainer which means i dont have to worry about mana health etc as the trainers i use have configurable options you can turn on or off such as infinite PC health, infinite group health, unlimited mana/stamina, instant abillity cooldown, add gold, give Attribute/Specialization points, infinite inventory space, unlimited potions(health,Lyrium and stamina Draught) and Level up and down you can use either 1 or multiple options to suit you

I play a Force Mage/Spirit Healer on Hard. I don't use any offensive spells (You have to take First of the Maker, but you can't use it if you keep spirit healer active all the time). I take Fenris as tank/damage dealer, Anders as an elemental/primal nuker and either an archer or a second damage dealer around with me all the time.

I am the mage who knocks all the bad guys/blood mages off their feet and keep them from spellcasting and/or using serious attacks. It's been my favorite mage to play. I buy every tome I can to boost my attributes and spells. I love this build.

I never touch blood magic, but I max out spirit healer - that tree is really useful for survivability - +10 constitution FTW. I like to build Hawke as a nuker/healer, so heavy on elemental, a bit of primal, and spirit healer

If you check the top section of my mage guide there's a relatively unfinished guide to one of the most powerful glass cannon mage builds out there if you're into that sort of thing.
I haven't been bothered to update it much (e.g. haven't factored in items from legacy/item pack 2) or added companion builds or tactics but it is a non-bloodmage guide which is focused a little more on party synergy.

Haste is only useful on nightmare or early game on lower difficulties. By the end of the game your magic resistance will be so high that haste lasts only a couple seconds (due to the haste bug).
In general, you can get by with full magic (so no willpower or constitution) and use death syphon at later levels for your mana. Unlike blood mages it isn't as necessary to have a large health pool and if you kill things faster (ie more magic) you won't need as much mana (ie willpower).

If you plan on following my guide I suppose I could try and update some companion builds and tactics for them. Otherwise, just using Arelex's bloodmage guide for the companions part should do the trick.

Pure damage setup is entirely possible without blood magic. Just make sure your warrior has rally and they spam it constantly.

Rally = no problems.

I have recently run a mage that didn't take any points in the "bonus" classes other than using the spec points to choose them. I ran a pretty maxed elemental, primal, spirit tree mage added the heal and upgraded heroic aura and upgraded mind blast. Mind you I only play normal difficulty and that is a whole different beast than nightmare, but it worked well. Put willpower to 30, con to 22 and dex to 14 with everything else dumped to Magic. Dex was to get a few more points in criticals due to the dlc gear and aura giving around 30-40% critical chance with the build making it pretty nice for the extra damage. If I was surrounded and couldn't kill the mind blast generally saved me. Having all three damage trees maxed gave a +30 to mana regin, in by 10 each, so add the death siphon and I generally NEVER ran out of mana even with the sustains going. I left off the upgrade to cone of cold and rock fist, and didn't bother with dispel magic, but otherwise it was maxed damage all the way. Of course without party damage, I could drop a firestorm then tempest as opening moves, then move on to more specific damage as needed usually a upgraded walking bomb to finish off everything in the first wave real quick....

All in all a very workable build on Normal, with few issues or troubles. I would have to play some on Hardcore to see if it stays that way, but that is for another play.
