Last night I went to Denerim, and for some reason you can't change party members in this city.  No idea why not.  So, I bought a new knife and needed enchantment done, so I went back to the city gate and tried to leave.  No matter what button I clicked, I could not get the world map.  I know about the buttons at the bottom, I've used them before.

So, I thought maybe I had to go to another section of Denerim and leave that way, so I went to the alley way.  Got into a big fight here, with 10-11 enemies.  Alistair died very quickly before even one bad guy died.  lol  I have his tactics programmed to drink a health potion when his health is below 50%, but he decided to execute a shield pummel instead.  Well, shield pummel takes a long time to complete, relatively, so by the time he was done, he was dead.

I then thought I was dead.  I am not a tank, I am a duel-wielding/cunning character.  I am very good at killing things, but not so good at taking damage, plus my health is not very high.  The Thug Leader went down pretty quick after this, and once that happened, the other thugs dropped pretty easily too.  I was already prepared to chalk it up to another mistake and re-load.

So, that was a relief.  Then I went to get out of this alley way, and I finally got the world map, but I could not go anywhere.  It kept saying "you cannot travel at this time".

So, I went back to Denerim and again tried the world map, but it was not there.  I exited the game and went online, where people said "click the world map button!"  So, I went back into the game and this time I found the button.  LOL  What on earth was I doing wrong?!  Tonight, I'm going to go back to a previous save and see if I can get this to happen again.

Has anyone else had this happen?!

Sounds like you were in the back streets of Denerim, which means you have to travel back to the Marketplace before you will be able to leave the city.

Sometimes as you travel from one back street to Marketplace your journey will be interrupted by various fights. You have to win those before you can resume your journey.

But the Marketplace itself is the only area in Denerim where travel to camp or other places in Ferelden is possible.

It also sounds like you ran into that noble that accuses you of killing the king and he challenged you to a duel. Which transports you to a back alley. That's a tough fight. It's a "gated encounter" meant to discourage you from visiting Denerim too soon. You can avoid him tho... if you go around denerim over past the Alienage gate, and then sidle over next to the front of that priest's house, and then cross the street, you can get into that alley to the Inn, or the magic shop, or whatever, and then just stay over toward the priest's house and veer over toward the alienage again before cutting across the market place, untl you're ready to meet him...until you either have a few more levels on you, or your persuade skills are high enough to talk your way out of the fight.

Thank you for all your advices. I believe the problem was I was clicking the local map button, then clicking the city button, and thinking that was it, when I should have clicked the button again, which is now the Wide World button! Anyway, I'm understanding better how the game works, so hopefully won't have these "stupid pill" moments anymore.

Another thing you can do, worked even with a low persuasion if you meet the noble that accused you of killing the king is to (lie). There is an option that says me a gray warden you must be mistaken, or something like that. I have only fought him once until i tried the lie or got my persuasion up high enough to not lie or fight him.

Yes, I fought Ser Landry and he was pretty tough. I didn't want to use health poultices, but I wound up using a few.
