Just giving a heads-up to anyone who might be thinking of getting a DRM-free BG (or other D&D games): they are on sale at GoG for 20-60% off (depending on how many you buy). Check it out! It's only available for this weekend!

Cheers for this!
Been thinking of buying ToEE recently and this just reminded me .... I played it a while back but didn't get very far, from what I remember it was incredibly difficult.
Has anyone played it? Is it worth getting?

ToEE is a very faithful (albeit extremely buggy) D&D combat simulator with bland setting & characters and almost non-existant story.
I much prefer Icewind Dale over it (Icewind Dale 1, I hate Icewind Dale 2 mainly because of 3rd edition rules).

It's a horrible game without the Circle of Eight mods. At least that is what I heard. I never tried the mods myself. Animation is top notch, and as virumor noted, so is its adaptation of 3.5e combat. ToEE has hands down the closest to tabletop engine I have seen. A rare turn based gem. Unfortunately the characters are uninspired, there are only two towns and one barely counts, and most of the game is centered around exploring its eponymous dungeon.
It may be worth getting very cheap, but I would give it a wide berth unless you are willing to overlook its flaws.

You'll want the CO8 mod for TOEE. Bugfixes, new content, lots of other goodies. Note that it also raises the difficulty of the game somewhat. http://www.co8.org/f...isplay.php?f=31
@Seagloom
It's a very good game, even unmodded. Just rather bugged. Subsequent patches fixed most of the problems. Co8 is practically bugfree.

I disagree. I finished it unmodded and it was decidedly *not* a good game. There was cut content all over the place, and the story and characters were weak. I know they were based on a tabletop module of the same name, and probably faithful to their counterparts; but paper thin characters are paper thin characters.
The only thing I enjoyed about ToEE was its combat and atmosphere. The areas were beautifully rendered. At first, I wasn't sure if the graphics were polygonal or hand drawn. That's an impressive feat. But other than graphics and combat, it was a disaster. I can't recommend unmodded ToEE to anyone. It's right down there with Pools of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.

Oh, i agree about the paperthin characters. If that bothers you, don't play TOEE. The Co8 mod doesn't change that. TOEE is more closely related to Icewind Dale and SSI's early games. There's barely any story and after Hommlet there's not much interaction either. It's a very old fashioned game and i loved every moment of it, mainly because i've never played a D&D based computer game with so many combat options.
If you didn't like the Icewind Dale series, you sure ain't going to like TOEE. On the other hand: if like me you loved those games, you'll probably like TOEE too, if just for the combat.

This.
I don't hate IWD2, but IWD1 has seen ten times the playthroughs. (ok, like 5 times, but still)
ToEE I love for the game mechanics (when they worked (I mean after they were modded by CoE)) but I always stop not far into the game, never getting close to finishing.
It's like an inverse of BG for me. Excited to play at the start (for different reasons), but what the game lacks fails to push me through. Yet I'll agree with anyone who praises either game, even if I won't praise them myself.
And I SO want to praise ToEE for turn-based combat, options, different (even as brief as they were) intro's to the game, etc...
even despite the wheel dynamic and the 3E rules, I want to praise ToEE.
But, in the end, if I can't get close to finishing a game due to ennui after only playing maybe a third of it, well...

I also thought TOEE was weak. But there are some first class games in there. My recomendations would be:
Neverwinter Nights: First on the list if you are into multiplayer co-op and SP fan modules. Third if you just want a one-off SP game.
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape Torment: Be warned- You have to play an assigned character.
Now I'm a serious RP purist. But if you like more linear adventure games without that pesky party dynamic messing up your plans Icewind Dale was excellent. I got bored with it (I prefer RP to combat intensive games) so I never finished it, though. I can't recommend ID2, Demon Stone, or DragonShard. Never played them. I tend to get bored with adventure strategy games (which is odd because some of my favorite games are strategy games: Total War, Mechcommander 2, Sid Myers Civil War, Sim City, and Civilization spring to mind).

Interesting. But I already have like 3-4 copies of the games on CDs.

Have been waiting for a discount offer for a while. I was sure it would come some day, though I counted on a christmas deal. This is a wonderful oppurtinity to get a copy without having to use discs (and running the risk of damaged discs). Great for laptops as well, you don't need to take discs with you on travel. As Baldur's Gate is my favourite, I bought them straight away when they came on GOG last year (even though I got them on disc twice), but now I've bought disc-free copies of IWD and TOEE as well. Dragonshard and Demonstone don't seem to measure up to CRPG-standards, if the reviews are anything to go by, didn't bother to buy those.
Only thing that misses from my collection now, is the Gold Box DOS-games in a format that can be installed on XP.

Into the last 5 hours of the sale.
I picked up the entire set of games on Saturday, just to have them available if I ever have the time to replay them (or play the ones I haven't played before: Dragonshard and Demon Stone). I'd love to see how the older me compares the games now to back in the day.

I have picked up the lot too, despite having a few on disc. Don't think we'll see an offer like this for these games for a long time. 34 dollars for 9 games (7 which are of very high quality) is almost too good to be true. Most pay more than that for one game these days, and many new games these days have next to no relay value (yes, I'm looking at you too BW).
