I recently got a new computer and purchased Mass Effect 2 on Steam. I bought it on my old computer from EA online. I back up my old saves to an external drive.

Once I installed the game on my new computer and started a new game. I would allow me to save and the confirmation in the bottom right would say that the game was saved but when I tried to load the game the load box was empty. There was also no load option from the main menu after saving.

I found the my documents>bioware>mass effect 2>save folder and copied my old games there.

Once I did that i could load, play, and save games to and from those careers but i still couldn't load any new game I started and then saved.

I tried uninstalling and deleting all mass effect file from my documents and reinstalling. Now I'm back to square one, but this time I cant seem to find a file for mass effect in my ducments. I tried copying my old mass effect 2 folder to my documents and still no luck.

I use a dual drive system to C is my primare and D is my slave where I save everything. I tried coppying my bioware>mass effect 2>save folders to my documents on both of these drive and still no luck. Can't load the old games, can't load and new game that I try to save. I really have no idea what else to try.

Any suggestions anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to post system info.

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;

2) Please post a full problem report as per this thread: http://social.biowar...6/index/4795299

Is your documents folder in the stock location or did you move it to another?? Is it by any chance now a main name of a drive?

If so that is your issue, and ME2 doesn't like documents folder being moved.

I`m currently re-downloading and installing the game so I`ll post the rest of this information when I have access to the confuguration tool.

I`m not sure.. Because I installed with steam i think the folders were in a different place then when I installed from EA.

When I reinstalled I was unable to find the folders at all. Perhaps if you could tell me where they are SUPPOSED to be I could move them there and see if that works... This is one of the first games I`ve bought with steam so I`m still getting used to things being in different places. Thanks for your help.

Not sure about Steam, but the default location of the save files are;
ME1: My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save
ME2: My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Save

You profile (settings and scheivements) are located at;
ME1: My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save\\Profile.MassEffectProfile
ME2: My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Biogame\\Profile\\Player1.prf

If you have moved the My Documents folder around, then try the tips listed in the Tech FAQ at the top of the forum, section 1.4.4

So I reistalled and this is where the files are:

Most of the files are in C:>Program Files (x86)>Steam>steamapps>common>Mass Effect 2
Binaries
BioGame
data
docs
Engine
redist
24980_install.vdf
game_key_installe.vdf
MassEffect2Launcher

The rest of the files are in D:>BioWare>Mass Effect 2
BIOGame
News
Save
ScreenShots
systeminformation

I copied saved games from my old computer and put them in the save file here. These saved games work perfectly fine, I can create new saves and load them as I should be able to.

These saves show up in folders within the save folder ex. John_31_Soldier_020710 etc. and within these folders are saves such as save_0001.pcsav, AutoSave.pcsav, and ChapterSave.pcsav.

The problem starts when I try creating a new saved game. Rather than creating a folder (John_31_Soldier_020710) and saving the file into this folder it just saves the "save_0001.pcsav directly into the save folder. When I go to the Load Game screen, I can only see the saved games that I copied over from my old computer, not the new games.

I also tried putting all of the files in the typical place which is My Documents>BioWare>Mass Effect 2 but when I tried this, the game would not launch and gave my an error code :Application load error 5:0000065434.

So I moved everything back to where it should be and I can at least play my old games but I would like to be able to play new games obviously.

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

That is the issue right there.

The user documents file has been moved or made a root directory and is causing the issue of saves.
My saves are in  C:\\Users\\mcsupersport\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save and by changing this location in your system it is causing the game to have a fit.

Ok, so when I was first setting up the computer I wanted to save all my documents and pictures etc in D: because its my 2TB slave and C: is my 150GB primary. So I went to Libraries>Documents and went into properties and set My Documents (D:) as the save location rather than My Documents C:. could this be the problem?

Yup, that is the issue.  Simple fix is to change the directory back reinstall the game, and then see if changing to how you want again effects anything.

So I changed my Set Save Location back to C: and reinstalled but the files were placed right back where they were before. I did however try something I should have thought of several days ago and thats to create the saves folder manually.

So for anyone else who has a similar issue, you can create the folder after creating a new game. The folder's name should have this layout. Name_##_class_DDMMYY

so an example is John_31_Soldier_020710

Obviously "John" is the name you give your character.

The trickier part was figuring out the two numbers after the name but I think I've got it figured out based on my old saves. It would appear that the first number corresponds to your origin so 1=Spacer, 2=Colonist, and 3=Earth Born.

The second number corresponds reputation. 1=Sole Survivor, 2=War Hero, and 3=Ruthless.

Obviously "Soldier" is your class and "020710" would be the 2nd of June 2010.

Anyway I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions even though I didn't fully fix the problem I still appreciate you guys taking the time to help me out.

You know it may be a combination issue with steam. Since the base program steam was installed before you changed it back to stock, it may be interfering with the install. Anyway glad you got it going, and hope you enjoy the game.
