Is anyone here at BSN interested in languages, or does anyone consider language learning to be one of your hobbies? Here's a brief template you can fill out and I promise I'll read all of 'em. :innocent:

Native language:
Other languages you speak:
Languages you want to learn (and why):

I think that gaming and language learning are two overlapping hobbies. I've met many people who claim to speak English well because of having played videogames, especially those with lots of dialogue. Anyway, here's my language profile:

Native language: English
Other languages you speak: Spanish, and can understand Italian due to family
Languages you want to learn (and why): Arabic because I'll be an Arabic major in college and want to live in a rich Gulf country someday  and Norwegian (see name!) because I love Norwegian music, winter sports/weather, and delicious smoked salmon!

Native: English
Other Languages: Spanish, I also know French and Greman, but certainly not enough to be considered fluent in these two.

Plans: Not really, I have enough coming at me with law, economics and other readings to occupy me. I'll just try to keep up the Spanish to stop myself getting too rusty.

@Norskebanan: If you love Norwegian music, you really should take a look at the "rapping on a golf course.." thread here on Off-Topic

Anyways,
Native language: German (Bavarian).
Other languages: English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish basics.
Would like to learn Italian and Brazilian Portuguese because they're beautiful languages. And Thai because it would be a challenge...

If you can learn one of them first, the other one will be a lot easier.

French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish are all tremendously similar. For example, I never studied French, but it's close enough to Italian, Spanish and Portuguese that I was able to pick it up (at least enough to get by) after spending a couple of weeks in France.

Other Languages: Spanish. Technically this should be my native language, but I picked up English faster on account of being raised here. My English far surpasses my Spanish as a result. I also took a year or two of Japanese lessons in my teens, but much of that knowledge has been lost over time. Currently learning French in school, but since it's a filler class I don't expect to go far.

Languages I want to learn: None currently. I was toying with the idea of learning Swedish awhile back. Have a good book for it and everything. But it's unlikely I'll have cause to use it now.

Oh, I know they have the same basic structure (the same with Danish, Norwegian and Swedish). I had to endure five years of Latin, but I'm not half as talented as Brian :P. I also learned Spanish for one semester. But it's getting tricky with the little differences and pronounciation. Imo the best method is to actually live in the country - maybe I should start with Italian, that's not too far away from where I live...

Native language: English
Other languages you speak: None. Better yet, I won't tell you.
Languages you want to learn (and why): Spanish. It's useful since there are a few families who can't speak English.

Other languages you speak: I speak Spanish moderately well. My accent is pretty good, but my abilities to improvise speech and comprehend aurally are lacking.

Languages you want to learn (and why): I would really like to learn Japanese, as the culture interests me and it just seems like a fun language to speak. I'm going to pick up the courses if they pop up in the coming semesters. This summer I went to Italy, Greece, and Spain, and I realized that I'd love to learn some Italian, as well, were I to get the chance.

Native; German
Other: English, French (just what I remember from school, which isn't that much) and some general very basic vocabulary in Italian

Want to learn: Learning Italian for real would be nice and Spanish might be useful but at the moment I don't really have the time to learn any new language.

How the f*ck can you have 3 native languages? That's impossible. Everyone has ONE native language, which is the language of your nationality (if your nationality is American, your native language is English) and/or the language you've learned first. Every other language that you learn is not your native language.

Many people grow up speaking more than one native language. My parents are from overseas, we lived in a few different countries and usually at home we spoke these three languages.

Native language: English
Other languages you speak: I did do 4 years of Japanese but I've forgotten most of it (and in the last year I slacked off)
Languages you want to learn (and why): French or Norwegian because they're closer to English and don't require me to memorize a bazillion characters that take a bazillion strokes to write.
