Being able to turn off subtitles was a big ego booster for me :)

It is quite a different experience, at least with films. I haven't played any games in foreign languages, but the first time I was able to watch a movie in the cinema in Japan and understand 90% of what was going on, it was pretty amazing. Later I re-watched some older Japanese films I had previously watched with subtitles and I was able to get a lot more of the nuance of the conversation.

Native language: Portuguese (Brazilian)
Other languages you speak: English, i can talk with someone that speaks Spanish, but I don't consider that I can really speak it.
Languages you want to learn (and why):
Russian, Japanese -> those sound funny to me.
Chinese -> they are the next rulers of the planet, I want to be able to say at least, "Please master, don't kill me and my family, I swear I'll work 24 hours a day." (just kidding)
German -> learning now. Still in an early stage.

For those who want brazilian portuguese lessons, here is the first:
Oi -> Hi
Tudo bem? -> (something like "whats up?")

****************

And a little swearing: (hope I don't get banned by that)
Vai tomar no cu! -> F*** You!
Merda! -> Sh*t!

Languages you want to learn (and why): I want to keep studying Russian because I love the language. Although I also want to formally learn my mother's native language (she's from the Philippines).

Kewl!

English, obviously. I speak a lil German and know some classical latin (which obv. helps with knowing the romance languages in general)

Anyway, i really adore the dead languages, hence my learning classical latin. In an ideal world i'd also learn anglo saxon and ancient greek. But Anglo saxon mainly. And i know its incredibly similar to what we speak now but i'd like to look into Middle English too.
Having a love of etymology plays a part in that.

I speak English.

I need no other languages for obviously the louder I shout the easier it is for those foreign types to understand me. Screaming the same word over and over at increasing volumes while becoming visibly annoyed is the easiest way to communicate with other cultures.

Ooooh! I love languages.

Native: American (aka b'stardized English)
Other Native: Pilot (trust me, there's so much jargon it's a different dialect of English)
Second: French (I was fluent at one point, but not anymore...you know, the whole "use it or lose it" saying)
Learning: Taking Chinese classes as electives, really like it, actually. I'd like to become fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and get my French back. I want to learn Chinese so that I might be able to actually be employed after getting my degree, I want to learn Japanese so I can watch anime without subtitles, and I want to learn Russian because I want to go to SPAAACE! (Portal reference, haha...)

Native language: Polish
Other languages: English. Spent almost 6 years in the US, so I'd even say fluent. Also French, which I know pretty well, a bit of Russian and German and I could also easily understand languages like Czech or Slovak as they're very similar to Polish)
Learning: I'd love to learn Japanese and Greek.

Native languages: Just English. English English, that is.
Other languages: None that I can speak with skill. I have about enough French to get buy wheh I'm on holiday.
Languages you want to learn: French (I started at school, and it makes sense to continue when they're right next door to the UK), Japanese (would be nice to live there for a while). For I while I wanted to learn the individual region-specific language that my Indian friend and Filipino friend have, but I know I couldn't manage it. Too complex.

Ha! That reminds me of when I went to France, and saw an English woman practically shouting at a butcher "I WANT A CHICKEN. A CHICKEN." Apparently, it didn't even occur to her to just point at the bloody thing. I was actually embarrassed to count myself as the same nationality as her. -_-'

I know...an understanding of the common language can eventually be dragged out of all foreigners even this long after the Babel incident.

Native language: Croatian
Other languages you speak: fluent English and basic Russian
Languages you want to learn (and why): fluent Russian (because I love Russia and I want to move there), Standard Chinese (because China will become a superpower soon and because learning a language so different from your own with an different writing system is good for your brain (actually learning any new language is good for your brain, but learning languages like this one even more so), and maybe German (because it's a good language for business here in Eastern Europe)

Native: Finnish
Secondary: English, a tiny bit of Swedish & Russian
Want to learn: Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese. The last two simply so I could visit more places, more easily. The first, because I had the chance to learn it, but I screwed it up because of my ignorance, I'd like second chance with it. No language is a waste, every single language you know, makes you that much more richer.

I can speak some German, just don't ask me to write it.

I took two years of Spanish and am surrounded by Spanish speakers but don't understand a word of it.
