The ending chapters to that otherwise uplifting book were, for some reason, some of the most depressing chapters i've read in a book or seen in a movie. Just how Maric turns from the uplifting and joyous young man to a hardened and somewhat cold ruler in the space of a couple years really got to me. He turned into who he needed to be, not who he wanted to be.
Then there was Rowan, who seemed to continue to have feelings for Loghain throughout the rest of her actual life. She no longer felt for Maric it seemed, and put up a wall between them that never came down.
Then, of course, there was the tragic case of Katriel. No matter what she had done, it was hard to not feel depressed over the evolution of her character. She felt she had no choice, she had to face the man she was infatuated with despite knowing what he would do to her (Which he may not have had Loghain given him the full story), when she could have easily escaped.
By the end, everyone turned into they needed to be, as opposed to what they wanted to be. None seemed happy.
Don't quite know why, but i just felt that damn depressing. The once joyful and somewhat optimistic friends turned to hardened and cold political acquaintences for the good of their nation.
Terrific book.
The point of this thread?.... I guess to gather opinions from others on the evolution of the characters in this book.
"The Stolen Throne" was damn depressing...*Spoilers*
