So far we have

Virmire Survivor

It's not even a guarantee those guys will be permanent squad members. Casey has said before in interviews that he doesn't want people to think in terms of permanent squad members because in war that just doesn't happen. So we may very likely be rotating people in and out of the ship throughout the entire game.

I remember for a fact when ME3 was first announced there were talks of "The Vigiliante" being voiced by some new girl. Haven't heard since on the status of "The Vigilante" so don't know if she was scrapped, or even if she was a squaddie to begin with (but its probable considering that's how Bioware names the squaddies) but it's the closest any of us have to a new squadmate aside from Vegas.

Again, don't think in terms of 'permanent'. The developers have been very careful to explain that the squad situation is complicated and dependent on a lot of things the player does.

As one example: how could Garrus and Tali be 'permanent' if they died in ME2? Players without those two would be losing a fifth, a quarter, a third, whatever, of their squad.

To answer your original question: there are some new characters yet to be revealed, it seems, who may or may not be 'permanent' squadmates.

There never was a "vigilante" that was just a role an actress played in the live action trailer, and there are no permanent squadmembers, Casey Hudson has confirmed that many times

edit: Here are some mentions about no permament squadmembers ".@kainryckarr Tali will be able to join your team, but nothing's permanent in #[/s]ME3 - it's a story of full-scale war, with lots of twists." -One of his tweets

"The story of Mass Effect 3 is a lot more authentic to a war story. So people are wrong to think, “Who are the permanent squad members?” Permanent friends in a war story betrays the concept! So we will be adding people and taking people away." - Interview with SFX

Ah, thanks for clearing that up then.

Prothean squadmate...

an idea born out of a bit of leaked information that was quickly removed. When they first showed off the Collector's Edition's extras, "Character DLC: The Prothean" was on the list...and everyone was like "PROTHEAN SQUADDIE CONFIRMED" and then like a day later, they removed that bit from the list..........take that for what you will...

While there will be parts of the game where returning characters can accompany Shepard for a mission, we will still have a core team that is always with Shepard.

Allow me to quote from the ME3 article in the June issue of PC Gamer.

"Every major character from the series will play a role in this plot if they're alive. Not all of them are permanent members of the team, but of those who aren't, many will join you temporarily during a certain quest. Garrus, Liara, Kaidan, Ashley and (newly confirmed) Tali are all full-time members of your team if they survied the previous games."

As one example: how could Garrus and Tali be 'permanent' if they died in ME2? Players without those two would be losing a fifth, a quarter, a third, whatever, of their squad.

In ME2 you didn't have to recruit everyone to finish the game. The suicide mission could still be launched even if you were missing a quarter of your squad.

Allow me to quote the ME3 article in the May Issue of Game Informer.

"Some characters are going to be absolutely core to the story. They're squad members. The whole story kind of pivots around them. Others will be conventional squad members that you can choose to have with you or not... Some characters might be there for just a mission, but they're a squad member in that mission. And some characters might just have cameo appearances."

Garrus and Tali will likely function as conventional optional squadmates. They will be able to join the team but they aren't critical to the plot and so their recruitment will be optional.

There will be perma squaddies, or at least "90%" squaddies. They've said they've reduced the number of squadmates to have more interaction/party banter between them, compared to ME2. If they was no permasquaddies/90%-squaddies, they would have to be tons of temporary squaddies which would make it impossible to have lots of interaction by default. So no, I don't really believe in this "no perma squaddies" claim from BW.

Casey and others have tweeted and said things in interviews that complete confuse the issue and are at times so contradictory that its unlikely we'll get a definitive answer until much closer to release.

Originally we were told we'd be getting a core squad which would basically be permanent made up from the names mentioned above, then sometime later this was changed into nothing is permanent and squadmates come and go, etc. etc.

What annoys me about the whole thing is that personally i think the original statement was true and the core team is exactly who we suspect it is, Vs, Liara, vega, garrus, tali. The me2 specific team and characters like Wrex though have a diminished role and rather than just come right out and say so, we'll continue to be given the same responses until almost release time.

Everytime you ask about an me2 specific character your told the same thing, can't say because it spoils the story, which considering not just info they've released about the game so far, but info released in the new comic, certain things are completely spoiled way worse than any confirmation about a me2 characters role would do.

All I know is that if Vega is my only permanent squad member while Liara, Garrus, and Tali are all temporary, my fanrage will be over 9000.

I'd say the only squad members that could be considered important enough to be "perma squad" would be Liara and the Survivor.

Not to say other characters aren't awesome and all, but Liara and the Survivor have been smothered in plot armour from the start. Either Bioware were too busy to do something important with them in Mass Effect 2, or they're building up to be big important characters in Mass Effect 3.

Personally i don't think there will be any solidly permanent squad members. But if there are, i imagine it'll be Liara and the Survivor that we can't get shot of.

It's not been confirmed. People are assuming that those ones are permanant, but the only thing we have been told is that Squadmates do not work the same way as they did in the previous games. Those five could be with us for the whole game, or for only a quarter of it. We just don't know.

Don't even get me started on that crap. I HATE whenever Casey says that. He could just flat out say "We're rotating characters through so all the fans will be happy" instead of that crappy line. In Kotor the entire galaxy was at war but did any of your companions leave in that game? No they didn't.

But as far as "permanent" characters go.. I like to think that the one's stated (VS, Garrus, Vega, Liara, Tali) will be the only actually permanet squad members while the rest will rotate through after awhile. I could see Legion, Grunt, Jack, and Mordin sticking around longer than anyone else tho.
