She has extremely high DPS, and giving her some stealth abilities increases her survivability.

Isabela is absolutely deadly, provided:
1) She has plenty of abilities to dump threat and minimise threat generation. Stealth is great for this.
2) You keep her away from friendly fire. One stray Fireball or Scythe will take her out.
3) You're willing to keep a close eye on her positioning in general.
She's not the kind of party member for people who like to just control Hawke and let everyone else run on AI tactics alone. You've got to keep an eye on those saucy pirates *g*.

Well unless your Hawke is a melee rogue, Isabela is a must-have in your party! I never go anywhere without her...
But I don't understand why you don't just try things out? If it don't work for you, just re-load your save and choose another companion.

That's not really true, though, unless you're playing on Nightmare. (in which case the same can be said of any npc) I've played with her in my party on Hard and never once took command of her. (except to say, "here, take a potion". In fact, she's one of the only characters I've never had to control occasionally - Avaline being the other ... though one of the patches broke Avaline's AI and last time I played with her I had to control her or she wouldn't engage in combat)
Izy is a great dps melee character, though I've never bothered with the couple abilities she has which allow her to call out and target a single foe.
And with Varric in the party, there really is no reason to make Izy a ranged character. (besides which, it isn't in her personality to do so)

Maybe it will be possible to give her Tallis' throwing spec.

With modding, of course it will. The scene with Hayder where the thows the knife is really cool.

Turning Isabela into a ranged rogue is useless. Her specialty is quick and clever melee fighting. She has a relatively good DPS and some useful skills. On the other hand, she's overall pretty weak in terms of health. Like Andrastee said, you have to keep an eye on her.

You could fiddle with the dev. console, and give her the archery spec, even Varric or Sebastian's trees if you wanted to.
I tried it, and immediately changed her back. It just felt wrong...

Well, she did say that Bianca needs a woman's touch, so I see a story possibility for her going ranged at least. Perhaps in some of Varric's "friend fiction".

You can simply use the console to give her the archery tree. Her swashbuckler specialization works surprisingly well with a ranged character. Apart from the two passives, the all hands on deck ability is very useful for an archer that has been surrounded and is actually more powerful with a bow.

I've always played on Nightmare, so I can't really speak for any other difficulty setting. I do find that Isabela needs more supervision than anyone else, though - she's the only companion who's going to be intentionally getting into melee without the hit points of a Warrior to survive it. Hence much careful observation of her health bar and moving her out of the way of friendly fire at all costs.
