I wonder what kind of audience DA has in Japan. I imagine it's pretty small.

The credits had the name Jeffrey Scott listed. A quick IMDB search shows that he worked on a lot of animation. It also says that he is the grandson of Moe Howard.

Edit
I guess it is official. Here's the Japanese website and the Anime News Network article that directed me to it.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about the writer of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Muppet Babies, Goof Troop, James Bond Jr and Captain N: The Game Master, writing the DA movie. Kind of wondering about the quality of the writing in this...

And Google Translate is always good fun! Here is the "story" from the website courtesy Google Translate:

"I've never seen so blood droplets" in view of the world acclaimed and hard  and realistic portrayal, but the RPG masterpiece sold abroad 600 million copies worldwide, cutting-edge CG animation in the film.

The most popular game in the frenetic world power "anime" films plays in the top CG animation creators in Japan.

The more realistic illusion of action and that the sword that cut the sky lowered swing 眼前.

Fidelity even gruesome depictions of cartoons about the fishy smell feel the blood that was critically acclaimed original game. Each "justice" is a story of war conflicts, can not determine right and wrong is simple ... heavy.

This film is really original with the "realism" and Japanese "anime world's  premier technology" combined with a high level, [it] works very  realistic animated entertainment never before existed.

And have the DA games even been released in Japan?

I'm pretty sure DA:O's been released in Japan sometime around the Western release date for DA2, but I don't know about the latter (nor whether either got a PC release over there).

I'd doubt Japan would be touching a DA film. They have a consistency about not allowing western products to be successful

By the way, the introduction reads as follows:

Praised with "I've never seen so much blood splatter!" for its realistic depiction and hard worldview, the overseas RPG masterpiece which has sold 6 million copies around the world gets adapted for film with avant-garde CG animation.

The top CG animation film creators of "major animation power" Japan take on the games which possess enthusiastic popularity around the world.

Action that overflows presence with illusions of swords that are being brought down cutting the air in front of one's eyes.

The gruesome depiction on the level of feeling the fresh stink of blood on one's skin, praised in the original games, gets faithfully reproduced even in animation.

A story that pictures a dispute in which various kinds of "justice" collide; a depth that can't be assessed by simple good and evil...

This film truly is a Super Realistic Animation Entertainment Product that didn't exist until now in which the "realistic presentation" of the original work and Japan's "world pinnacle of animation technique" have been joined on a high level.

I'm a little relieved, that looked much better than I would of thought. I just hope that the voice over guy isn't actually in the movie. And please make Miranda Raison return as Cassandra voice actor in this. Worth noting the Japanese title is Dragon Age: The Blood Mage's Crusade

the voiceover wasn't horrendous, but it certainly sounded bad. The animation however looks great.

I prefer the setting-neutral translation Holy War of the Blood Mages TBH.

I know there are many anime fans here, but this just doesn't grab me.  As others have noted, the voiceover is subpar.  Must've been another one of those FUBARs with its origins in the new reality of EAWare.  Image IPB

Exactly what I thought... must be the helmet :P

And does the character do the "ninja run"?

I believe it's called "bird run". And yes.

I don't mind anime style, as there are good anime. However, I fear it will end up being less Cowboy Beebop/vision of Escaflowne level of epic, and more Final Fantasy: Advent Children bag full of fail.

Gackt is singing the theme for this? That alone is awesome. I liked the trailer. Of course I'm one of those dirty rotten anime fans. :P
