Well, I do get you don't think so, but its nearly funny some of the conclusions people are drawing around here. The Anime is a failure either because:

A) Its another way BioWare to not stand true to its 'non-JRPGy' roots.

Which ignores the fact that it was first announced well before DA2 was announced.

[sarcasm]Its obviously all a long standing conspiracy[/sarcasm]

I can't decide from the trailer if I'm going to like this or not. I certainly hope that the english VA work will not be along the lines of "I'm randomly shouting my lines to show that I'm angry!" The whole yelling in battle for no reason really bugs me as well, pet peeve. I like the way things look though, and the CGI type of animation doesn't bother me.

The real deal-breaker for me will be whether the story is good or not, and whether the characters are well done, which will be heavily dependent on the voice work. Have to wait and see when it gets released.

I think people yell in battle as a way to maybe scare the enemy, and also because you may put a lot of effort into fighting.

But yea, I really hope the English VA will be great. Knowing Funimation, it probably will.

also, the inherent humor in them making a dragon age anime after all the JRPG complaints. I seriously thought they were trolling people or doing some kind of viral marketing stunt until I saw the IMDB page and realized someone is actually spending money to make this.

1) They may have decided to make this prior to the JRPG complaints.

2) making an anime doesn't mean the entire franchise will turn into a complete JRPG.

3) Dragon Age could actually stand to see some JRPG elements, at least in terms of gameplay.

Where did I say that them making a straight-to-dvd anime movie will turn the franchise into a JRPG? I just said it's hilarious.

Pokémon is a fine a show, most people think it got bad but I say it has been at the same level since the start.

I think it did lose some quality, for a few reasons:

1) The VAs changed for Ash, Professor Oak, and other main characters. For the fanbase, this was not well received because the voices we had grown up with now vanished and were replaced with voices that didn't really fit with the characters.

2) Ash is still 10. At least 3 times in the series they have said that "it's been a year since such and such happened", meaning Ash should be at least 13 by now. I guess they want to keep it targeted to the kids still, but this wouldn't require Ash being stuck in Groundhog Day for the rest of his life.

3) Ash forgot everything he learned and is now a novice trainer again. I guess again, they're doing this under the same line of thought for his age, but Ash doesn't need to be a novice again for the new fans to be introduced to key concepts about the world.

4) Iris constantly saying "such a kid!". It got old real fast and made me want to slap her. So anytime I hear her say that I just kinda go "Ugh....."

It's still a great show -- and the moves now look better -- but it's lost some of what made it great in the attempt to make it more kid-friendly when that was unnecessary.

But I think now we're straying too far off topic.

1) not in Japan=] but really they fit the roles well now.

2) Ash should be 20=] but no time is said in the show, you can go over all the episodes and see how many times it goes to night if you want. If I had my way he would be gone but kids like him.

3) Well every new show  will havenew kids watch and they want them to go buy the games they could have a May type character again? I don't know, point is Ash is an idiot.<_<

4) Iris is the best thing in years.:wizard:

And why it is more kid-friendly is because Japan is more like that now(any show that comes on in the day will never be "dark") hell the new Hunter x Hunter show has more edits cuz of it's timeslot.

Yeah really off-topic now.

I don't see how it's hilarious when it was announced prior to DAII and DAO had plenty JRPG elements on its own. That's kinda like blissfully ignoring the facts of the situation.

not meant to be insulting or anything, just kinda giving my take on it.

Eh, Professor Oak just sounds.... weird now. I'm not saying the VAs don't do a good job, but the characters and the new voices don't mesh that well. IMO that is.

2) Ash should be 20=] but no time is said in the show, you can go over all the episodes and see how many times it goes to night if you want. If I had my way he would be gone but kids like him.

The first time a year has been mentioned to go by is when Ash returns to Viridian City for a gym battle. He says "It's been a year since we left on our journey". The second time is when he's in Johto celebrating with Pikachu the anniversary of the day they met, which means that's the second year. The third time happened somewhere that I don't remember.

3) Well every new show  will havenew kids watch and they want them to go buy the games they could have a May type character again? I don't know, point is Ash is an idiot.<_<

They don't need to do May or Dawn over again. They could just introduce Trainers of the Day again and have Ash, Iris, and Cilan teach them the basics.

Or do what they've always done in the battles in the series and point out the blatantly obvious.

4) Iris is the best thing in years.:wizard:

I like her character, just not her constantly saying "You're such a kid!". Especially in times where it's unwarranted.

"Oh you're hungry! You're such a kid!"

Which happened in an episode I watched the other day at 7 a.m. on CN. Made absolutely no sense.

And why it is more kid-friendly is because Japan is more like that now(any show that comes on in the day will never be "dark") hell the new Hunter x Hunter show has more edits cuz of it's timeslot.

Weird considering some of the stuff Japan does with anime and manga. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a dark show a good deal of the time.

Yeah, funny how humor works that way. Almost as if people don't google release/announcement dates of things before they decide it's okay to laugh at them.

The year thing was a dub only thing. Iris's "You're such a kid!" is a Japanese joke more or less. FMA:B's timeslot was mid-day if I recall and even Shonen Jump manga is less dark nowadays, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note have been the most dark manga in the last 5 years.

I consider the dub and the Japanese one to be the same universe -- and thus what's said in one applies to the other -- so Ash should be at least 13. But that's just me.

Not much of a funny joke when used in inappropriate scenarios. It was funny at first but now everything that someone does is apparently kiddy, and it detracts from the show.

I remember having some Yu-Gi-Oh manga -- back when I was a Yu-Gi-Oh nerd -- where Yami Yugi killed some people through various methods. He even set a guy ablaze once.

I have to say that was pretty badass. And dark. I miss that manga volume. Why'd I get rid of it?

But then Ash is still 10 as well, if you do that right?

More funny to the Japanese I bet

Old Yu-Gi-Oh! before the card games was good.:wizard:

Just because it's not ever said that a year passed doesn't mean a year didn't pass. You know, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

They may not have felt like it was worth mentioning.

Anyway, we're way off topic now. So uh.... Cassandra. She's awesome.

Yeah but he still is 10(think of it like Sazae-san or the Peanuts no one ages) even the Japanese make fun of it.

And yeah back to Cassandra she looks great.

Indeed, but there's a difference between the sort of resounding roar as two armies charge into battle and the sort of high pitched "aaaaaaaaaa!" that individuals seem to do when fighting either other individuals or small groups of enemies. It's silly and makes no sense and wouldn't scare or intimidate a chipmunk with a nervous disposition and a weak bladder. I can understand the sort of grunting type sounds when people are swinging swords and bashing shields that makes sense, but there seems to be no reason for what happens in the trailer. It's like, oh, enemies I'll loudly and stupidly announce my presence by yelling like an idiot on helium as I fight. Like I said, pet peeve.

I also hope the music will be a fitting score which is at least in line with the games even though not the same. Obviously there should be thematic differences based on the theme of the story but the music in the trailer was a bit too modern rock with electric guitars. I might love metal but there's a time and place for styles of music and types of instrument and I feel this is a place for an orchestra.

The trailer was lulzy. Though to be fair, many anime trailers are if they aren't viewed with the proper context.

But I do like the art style.

Dragon Age 2 would've looked infinitely better if it looked like the anime.

It's still not too late for Dragon Age 3...

Also: I think when people compare Dragon Age 2 to a JRPG, I don't think it's because of how the gameplay handles, I think it's because of how a lot of the game was stylized and over the top. JRPG still isn't appropriate in those terms but it's the closest concept that broadly relates to how people feel about such stylization in terms that most people understand (I've also done this in the past). Personally, on the gameplay, I feel like Dragon Age, especially 2 with it's focus on micromanagement of ability and pot cooldowns, is reminiscent of MMO combat.

That's correct. The look & feel of the game was ill-fitting to the world established in DA:O. Gameplay was just a minor problem, but the over-the-top-combat contributed its share. The main issues  DA2 had were neither waves nor recycled areas, but the general direction in art design and a broken dialogue wheel (bad paraphrasing, intent icons and the lack of a neutral option in favor of the sarcastic lines).

I can understand the JRPG complaint in terms of the way too linear story. That's something I've complained about many times, most recently in the "DAII makes Wired's most disappointing list" I believe.

Sure DAO had you fighting the Archdemon with an army, but you weren't forced into having the same exact conclusion.

Sure you get an army of Dwarves, but the game doesn't force you to have Bhelen on the throne.

Sure you get an army of soldiers, but the game doesn't force you to preserve the Ashes or save the Guerrin family or spare Loghain.

however, I disagree that the combat was over the top, depending on what one means by that. Some things -- like paratrooping waves -- were over the top, but that's not really a major issue I feel.

If we're talking strictly about the new animations for each class, I did a thorough examination of the animations -- along with everything combat related -- and made a blog about it.

If we're talking about how in certain cutscenes people can jump 50 feet in the air with no rational explanation, then that's definitely over the top and something that shouldn't exist. The rule of cool is all well and good, but there are certain boundaries that turn something that's "cool" into something that's.... well... stupid.

I could've accepted Meredith moving to the platform at an increased running speed. That could very easily be attributed to physical health enhanced by red lyrium, akin to how Morrigan likes to think the Warden's sexual skill can be attributed to natural prowess and the taint itself.

Sure the jumping could also be attributed to the red lyrium, but somehow that doesn't quite seem to mesh very well. IMO of course.

anyway, I'm done ranting now.

announcement /=/ production. Brent knowles left in September 2009, well before DA 2 was announced, yet he knew not only that DA 2 was in production but also where it was headed.

I'm sorry if this offends but i'm pissed off they did it in Japanese, first. Origins is an English game, with most of it's fans being English speakers. That's so... weird? Why did they do that? Why spend more money on getting cool Japanese voice actors/celebrities than on getting the proper voice actors FROM THE GAME?!?!

PAOEHFOAIGH FFFUUUU-

In all seriousness, though, I totally love Gackt. :wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub:
