The trick to clearing the hardest difficulty without too much trouble is having a player that doesn't suck. A player that doesn't suck will be fine with any class. A player that does suck should stick to normal.

Fix'd.
@OP You should just stick towards one of the guide, you can beat the game easily with any class.

Eh, strongest is such a broad word. It's not so much about the class but about your knowledge of it and your enemies. Nightmare might seem easy from all the videos and comments, but if you don't know how to take care of certain enemies and situations it will quickly overwhelm you. Mind, experience is the best teacher, so going at it headstrong can be a good thing, too, but be prepared to reload battles or at least have companions die.

Probably depends how easily you are driven to frustrated raging. Each class has their own advantages and disadvantages. Have a go at each and see what fits your play style.
My suggestion when attempting nightmare for the first time would be to plan out your build for Hawke and companions before hand. I find it helps you get your party working fairly well together and you don't end up choosing skills at random and having to respec later.

Check out Arelexx's guides - they are essentially insta-win buttons. (especially the mage one). As Luke Barret said a little while ago, a game like DA:2 doesn't require any great skill - just knowledge of how game mechanics work and the intelligence to exploit those mechanics for optimal damage. (Failing that, the ability to read the work of someone who's done it for you - literally you can get through DA:2 nightmare with Arelexx's guides with just 6 hotkeys and no pausing. o.O )
Thats crazy!

If you on are the computer, I highly recommend a Blood-mage/Reaver warrior hack. It is Godlike.

They're all really good on their own merit.
For a first timer I'd probably recommend a two-hand warrior and have Aveline act as tank. You'll get used to the basics, focus on damaging enemies (without worrying about micromanaging too much). I'd say allocate your stats at least 2 Strength, 1 Constitution until your Strength hits 42 and Constitution hits at least 31. Then, focusing on the Vanguard Tree you should focus on pumping points into Dexterity for increased Critical Hit Chance/Damage.
A mage is also really good if you know what you're doing. Just stay in the back lines. An offensive mage does quite well without having too much micromanagement (since chances are you'll be controlling Hawke), focus on elemental and primal skill trees while you have Aveline and Fenris on the front lines and Anders in the backline (for healing).
Just remember you want at least two melee attackers (Aveline, Fenris, Isabela, Carver) and two ranged attackers (Varric, Sebastian, Merrill, Anders, Bethany). If you aren't a weapon & shield warrior have Aveline around to soak damage. Fenris is fantastic for cutting through enemies if you're a ranged attacker (Isabela you have to control manually to get any use out of her). Varric is very weak early game but by end game he's excellent, Sebastian is a little more sturdy. Merrill is good as a debilitator and Anders is your healer.
Just trying to give you some good advice in addition to strongest class.

It sucks that the 2h warrior got debuffed with the new patch on the 360 apparently.

Strongest class in the game, in my opinion, would have to be a dual wield rogue, They are pretty much walking meat grinders, slaughtering all.

Personally, despite the nerfs from it last patch, an archer rogue is wickedly fun to play. Especially on boss fights, watching them go down and being unable to do anything is fun.

Definately a mage with all the CC and slow spells. There is a vid on youtube atm about a mage soloing nightmare.

Has to be started some where around second or third act since it is pretty much impossible to solo nightmare difficulty during the first act due to how little you have of everything. (That and knockback is a ****, thank god for dlc items making you immune to stuns and knockback)Tokion wrote...

the best for cc damage and control is a mage
for single target damage i still see an archer rogue being better even with the nerf in from last patches

Lets be honest, the game is relatively easy anyway. I would recommend you play through all the classes and choose what your comfortable with. No point playing a so called ''Strongest'' class if you don't like it.

Rogue simply because you can unpick your own chests/doors.
That's what stands out to me as the biggest differentiator.
For my playthroughs:
(in order of strength)
1. Blood mage
2. Archer rogue
3. Sword & shield warrior
4. Dual weapon rogue
5. Two-handed warrior
But, I suspect this has to do with my play style.

The strongest class is the one you mastered.
If you suck playing a mage (or rogue or warrior) you will get pwned if you play one.
If you know how to play a mage (or rogue or warrior) you will pwn everything in the game in case you play the class.
