Poor soul, how did you ever get through ME1?

I'm obviously oversimplifying with the 80% but Mass Effect's core game mechanic is distance combat with use of weapons. And it was pretty bad compared to other games that came out the same year. Superior story, deep characters and interesting background has nothing to do with the combat in both Mass Effect games being sub-par.

Especially since there were two different departments working on story and combat. People working on the story were working on the story, people working on combat did a pretty lame job.

Don't you just love the Bioware forums now?

- Gay/Bisexual nuts spamming each thread and demanding immunity from bans.
- Religious/Cerberus nuts harrasing people on personal levels and starting cults.
- Ignorant and Bias kids who become keyboard heros when Gears of War is spoken of.
- Power Flamers who flood the "Character" category.

I'm not trying to troll or act like an ass or even suggest Mass Effect is like Gears in anyway; but I'm saying it cannot hurt to make the A.I. a little more "Supportive" in ME3. I mean if you're going to alter the "lore" and make Tali want to Taco Touchdown on a FemSheps face; then you can easily fix the A.I. to make them more supportive and less retarded.

Please... making the AI better is a given and I'm sure the devs know this. Taco touchdowns aside.

Guys, can we cut down the personal jibes and sarcasm just A BIT, please? Things get heated, people get emotional, and then in the end I get more blood stains to wash out of the ban hammer.

Well, if Gears 3 can have good squad AI, then ME3 can have good squad AI.  Different details, but same overall principle.

From the way the devs have been yammering on about it, though, I think they've figured out how to make enemies behave, so no concerns there.

Graaagh, I wish I had an Xbox. Gears sounds fun as hell.

You're the one saying that you want the same level of focus that a team making a simple action game like gow put into their ai into a huge rpg like mass effect? And I'm the one who's an ignorant kid for telling you it's unrealistic!!?
You can ask bioware for the WORLD and it doesn't mean they'll be able to give to you!!!
I'm the one that's ignorant??
Bioware the ai of you huge rpg game is not as good as the ai from GEARS OF WAR!!!!
That sounds SANE to you? or SELFISH?
I go for selfish sir, thank you!

I played a little bit of it when waiting for a class. It's a really fun game. Some people don't like it, but its mechanics are pretty rock solid. Sure you can't throw stuff around, but if you're playing Soldier class, then you'll love GoW.

AI in ME2 is meant to be minimal. You're supposed to control your team's special attacks yourself, and that's all the AI you should need.

I don't want ME3 to be a 95% shooting game, but OP have a very valide point, having better IA for our squad would also benefite the RPG side of ME, make us feel that those characters are actualy "alive" and have their own personnality on the battle field, each squad could offer "help" or "attack" style depending on their personnality.

In ME, our squad are just nutshell that provide extra power.

Exactly, you even have control over where you want your team mates to stand and send them to cover wherever you choose so if they are dying it's the player's fault mostly in an RPG. Comparing an rpg like this to a simple action game is just rediculous.

Concerning the story, I heard the protagoinist is still a stoic meatbag.

I also heard it was the strongest story in the trilogy, but that's not saying to much.

As for gameplay, GOW3 is a dedicated shooter. And last time I checked, this forum got angry when ME3 tried to imitate it.

No, it isn't. Programmers shouldn't strive to do a half-a**ed job when it comes to the AI. If squadmates are so insignificant that they can provide no help on their own why bother even including them at all?

One of the best third person shooters out there. Gears of War 2 was a lot of fun for me. I'm not sure how good the third one is but I'm sure it's an amazing game.

It's not neccessarily that the AI is crap, it's that it is designed for someone to give it direction. It gives that feeling that your in charge of the gamefield. The AI does need work of course and im sure the devs are taking good care of it.:wizard:

That is what Bioware has always done. You aren't just supposed to ignore your squad and expect them to take up the slack; you need to direct them yourselves. Mass Effect is still a variation on traditional party-based tactical combat.

You know, I came into this with only one question: Is Gears 3 good? Now I have another: what the f*ck is a "Taco Touchdown"?

Oh right, on topic. Any addition to making the AI smarter would be helpful. I beat the game on Insanity a few nights ago and the entire game consisted of me fighting enemies ON MY OWN!

The ME2 AI was a bit bad yes, but it was compensated by the fact that you could control it. With minimal effort, squadmates were a great asset, primarily because of their powers and their synergy with Shepard's. And don't tell me you didn't crack a smile when Grunt yelled I. AM. KROGAN. and then crushed 4 Husks in a single charge. When did Dom or such do similar acts of badassery out of cutscenes?

The squad in Gears 3 is barely controllable, and anyway it's not the point; they are supposed to absorb bullets and act as Vita-Chambers on legs. Squadmates in this game aren't brilliant or anything; they just stick to cover and let the player do his/her things. When you get to the explodey zombies part, you can clearly see their health is buffed up; 2 explosions kill you, they can take 3 or 4 to the face easily and don't even make any attempt to evade them zombies. They are programmed to take cover and revive the player as needed. They do their job well, but it's no show of brilliance on their part at all. Indeed, the AI in the first Gears was horrendous; often, they would jump out of perfectly good cover and get massacred in seconds, leaving you alone to kill that machine gun, the Wretches, and the respawning Grunts. Not fun times.

Also, for all the cliches the Mass Effect series sometimes touch, it's not anywhere near as cheesy as Gears of War. People really think it has a good story and likeable characters? Or were surprised at any of the ''plot twists''?
