the original squad is the top 6.
Wrex : 4.3472 Kaidan : 3.1488 Ashley : 3.4713 Liara : 3.7488 Garrus : 4.3519 Tali : 3.5860
Actually, they are just listed in that order.
Nothing very surprising in the survey, beyond perhaps the number of players on the board who play femshep and the low percentage of Renegade players voting in the survey.
The way the squad member portion of the survey was constructed favors bromance/non-threatening characters for high marks. A "Who's your favorite?" type of approach would have doubtless shuffled the results quite a bit.
"who's your favourite" would have caused Tali to have the massive lead she usually does in every poll, followed by Garrus and then Wrex
Not to say I dislike those three, it's just they are at the top of polls all the time.

Actually in recent "Who's the best character?" polls, Kaidan has been getting second.alex90c wrote...

And the top 6 squad mates are definitely not my top 6, but that's why it's a poll....

i like how Bioware has such emphasis on humans, when the 2 most popular on the list are a Krogan and Turian.
Well no one can deny the awesomeness of Garrus Brokarian and Bronot Wrex

This is the only reason why I keep the council alive in majority of my playthroughs I can't wait to rub it in the turian counciler face in me3.Ieldra2 wrote...
(2) Regarding the Council choice, I think that most people find it more interesting to keep them alive regardless of whether they play Renegade-ish or not. For myself, I know that I've rationalized keeping the Council alive with my main Shepard just to get the airquotes in ME2 and hopefully be able to air-quote back at the Turian councillor in ME3.

There's a human-based setting in Mass Effect in order to keep things reasonably accessible since it's still a young franchise. Star Trek always focused on human captains but plenty of its most well-received characters were anything but. It's simply the best way to approach from a marketing perspective.

Well, the low number of Renegades isn't very surprising. People want to "feel good" when they do decisions and being the guy who sacrifices much for the greater good doesn't lead to that feeling, it's safe to assume any game has people play "Lawful Good".

If this were the player base as a whole, yeah. But surveys of more hardcore fans tend to skew things in a variety of ways. Most people play the soldier (like 80% or so?), but around here I would expect somewhat more balanced numbers, that sort of thing. "Noteworthy" would perhaps have been a better word than "surprising," though.

True, though official statistics themselves aren't much different with Paragon greatly outnumbering Renegade. I'd search for it but my internet is having difficulty doing anything but browsing this site.

I rarely (if ever) use them. In my last ME1 play through, Garrus was left hanging around C-Sec and Wrex was shot when he pulled his weapon on my very renegade Shepard.

Stupid good would probably be more accurate, but knowing BioWare those decision would probably be the only ones getting rewarded.
Bioware said that no decisions would be punished, only different. I'm not sure i trust them though.

Depends on what you see as "punishment" and what not.
I see it as a punishment not being able to save a certain race because I let Wrex die on Virmire. Yes, you could say anyone who gets Wrex killed on Virmire isn't caring about the Krogans, so this player wouldn't see it as punishment if the Krograns get whiped out.
You'll still be able to end the game with Earth & Galaxy saved, but at the cost of all Krogans. So it's not a real punishment on the big picture.

Seriously, if the endings are all about Shepard saving the world, I'll be pissed.
