And yeah, Caridin deciding it's best to destroy the anvil and doom the dwarves to slow extinction instead of turning some into golems is pathetic. If it was being used unjustly, he should have done something about that, or just goddamn suck it up and realize that sacrifices are needed in order to destroy the darkspawn.
And let's be honest, it's not like becoming a golem against your will is particularly different from being conscripted into the Grey Wardens against your will, and we all know that happens. Imagine if the guy who invented the Joining ritual had the same attack of conscience Caridin did, and decided to destroy the knowledge of the Joining forever, just because he thought it was unfair that people were being conscripted into the Wardens...

Maybe akin to why he couldn't destroy the anvil himself... (if I remember correctly)

"Come, come, bonnie lynne, tell us, tell us, where you've been," chanted by the little boy in Haven outside of the house with the bloody altar. If you listen to it all the way through, its about how some children murdered 'bonnie lynne' and cut off her fingers then buried the corpse. Talking to the boy further, you can pursuade him to show you a finger he found.
Then, theres also the creepy rhymes in the nursury, such as the "Ser wilhelm, Ser wilhelm" one and the "Eight nine, and now you die" one.

Actually, becoming a golem and becoming a Grey Warden are two different things. As a golem you lose all the perks of being a living thing while as a Grey Warden, you can still experience those things for awhile. The only bad thing about being a Grey Warden is that the taint will eventually overwhelm you and you die if you kill the archdemon. Otherwise, you are still pretty much normal.

The difference is that there's no chance to escape the death in case of the Golems. For future Grey Warden drinking the blood there's a chance to live. For a fighter defending a city there's also a chance to life. Even the comparison with the dwarf legion of the death doesn't work.
Caridin talk isn't fully precise about his change of feeling, he highlight two points:
- That he stops support do the operation.
- That it elvolved so dwarves wasn' t volontary anymore and most was forced to be killed into golem.
I feel that on the same theme it could have been changed to make both choices more equal on a morale level. As it's presented it's hard to not be agree with Caridin. The key point could have been to agree make it public and controlled by the assembly and known to anybody. So that there's a control for no abuse. Also the choice of someone volontaring could have been public during a minimal elaspe of time before to be done and during this time the familly could attempt a lawsuit against the decision and other stuff. All in all showing it in a way the player could more easilly consider it as an acceptable morale choice.
EDIT: Also quote at the end how your choice had in fact with no influence as they succeed to rebuild it. It's a good point because I'll do the alternate choice (for a change) more easilly with this end in mind. The only problem will be to not lost Shale I didn't try that much during may 1st play.

He did try to do something about it. He was turned into a golem by his king for his trouble. And also, the Dwarves are dooming themselves to a slow extinction. There's nothing keeping them in their subterranean city-states bordering dangerously close/smack-dab in the middle of Darkspawn territory, they just choose to in order to continue their reverence of the Stone and old beliefs. Old beliefs that are pretty much outdated now; they abhor and condemn any Dwarf who goes to the surface, despite their neccesity to trade with outsiders to prosper. And though their numbers dwindle, they still limit those who can fight and defend to those born in the appropriate castes, while still preventing the Casteless from doing anything to so much as contribute anything useful to their society.Koyasha wrote...
